Disquiet Junto Project 0106: Sonar Vortex

After reading this weeks Junto, I knew right away what I wanted to do...I recently got hold of "punch hole music boxes" (thanks Masaya for sharing a link that turned me to these wunderinstruments) Music boxes that play the music from holes you punch into a card...(Hope it makes sense) I traced the image, I got from the weather site, onto a card - inverted and retrograded it to get 4 variation all together ...recorded the music box twice - once in the intended direction and once reversed. Went out into my garden and recorded the sound of the weather around 1PM - it' pretty windy as you can hear. Kept it simple eq'ed and mastered a little to finish it - ohh btw theres some delay/reverb on the musicbox....

I used one processed guitar and tried to play live to follow the graphical draw of my city weather map. It was firstly recorded on my old cassette rec, then on to my reel to reel ... and quickly mastered ... in digital ...

**Production Notes**

The weather was nice today in Munich, Germany. Much too warm for a winters day. Sunny. It made me want to go outside. When the Disquiet Challenge came in, I got my data from Weatherspark.com and tried to make sense of the "score". (You find a clipping at http://www.artinvaders.com/transfer/disquiet106.png)

- As a day is pretty much a manifestation of time, I made some simple beats, which represent the ticking of a clock in quarters of an hour. 

- I defined most of the temperature lines as pitch. Played the notes was played with Reaktors Gaugear (a very pretty beast this is).  

- Added some bass (there was a line starting in the middle of the piece). 

- I also had three sunny hours in the middle of the piece and three clouds later, which were made woth different bell like sounds from Operator. 

Production time: about 3 hours. Honestly, it’s more a sketch than a song. And it‘s too dense. And a bit too short. As always.

Shall I compare thee...? [disquiet0106-sonarvortex]

My first Disquiet Junto submission for 2014 (and my first one in far too long). This project has us take a visualization of the weather in one's local area, and use it as a graphical score.

My process:
- Use the Awesome Screenshot extension in Google Chrome to clip the image from the WeatherSpark site.
- Open the image in GIMP. Transform it by inverting the colors and posterizing.
- Imported the image to Virtual ANS, a program that can convert image into sound. Tweaked the ANS parameters until I was satisfied with the result, and exported it as a WAV file.
- Imported the sound into Audacity. Added a little silence to the end, applied some EQ to boost the bass, applied a simulated plate reverb, adjusted the amplitude, and exported as an MP3.

Additional notes:
- I decided to prepare the image before submitting it to Virtual ANS because it would allow the graphical elements to emerge more starkly.
- There is an artifact at the end the track resulting from the ANS process; I decided to keep it as it seems to work as a coda.
- The weather data came from the Silver Ranch Airpark in Jaffrey, NH, US, which is one of the weather stations closest to Peterborough, NH (where I live).

Since planning & closely following data lines are not a strong suit hereabouts, let's just let the temperature graph set forth the rational front and these notes the irrational backstory.

The lines are not very faithfully followed.  Not unfaithfully either.  Um, shakily drawn.

This was created using the very fun Virtual ANS.  If you know nothing of this or the other related crossplatform programs, go there soon as you can.  If not right now.

The scale roughly is thinking of degrees Fahrenheit like Hertz.  A doubling of degrees is an octave.  More or less--aforementioned shakyness.  

In relation to the main temp. graph line (a projection for Friday 10 Jan 2014 hereabouts, not the actual observed temps.) the record low and high graphs are kept close by, so as to serve not just for whales or bats but for human listeners & so-so speakers.  The record low line was truncated and I hadn't noticed till later.  Again with the idea of keeping the graph line interpretations within earshot, I just used the part of the record low contour shown in the screen shot.

The main temp. line was drawn fatter, not very sharply as the others, esp. the record high.  But it's not nearly so busy as the record high and carries more weight as its emerging bulk rises up.  

The mean temp. graph line is there, but seems largely swamped by the projected temp.   It occupies about the same area and is less dramatic in contour.  I didn't worry about it.  The mean takes care of itself.

ANYHOW.. back to this "Circadian Vortex"...
I also liked the intensity,energy and potentially oppressive nature of extremes of heat and or cold  and the gradual waking up and settling back down of
natural circadian rhythms- sunrise to sunset. 
So I used the main temperature line graph as a source for creating melodic fragments or impressions, atmospheres and rhythms in Metasynth using instruments based on pure sine waves mapped to microtonal scales(this is the source of the organ like sound) as well as manipulations of piano and kalimba-like custom sample based instruments also in metasynth. The final composition was arranged in Logic according to the flow and structure of the original temperature graph and the feeling of rising and falling heat, rising and setting of sun, gradual waking,activity and resting of landscape and environment.

Circadian Vortex

Disquiet106---For this I used the forecast for the 10th, but wound up doing the track in the early hours of the 12th, when it was in the past. Original plan was to use homemade synth programmed with all notes of the 22-notes of the “Shurtis” Indian scale[at least, according to Wikipedia when I came across it; no real in-depth skill here with it!?!], with a unison oscillator detune moved around with the historical high/low spread through the day. The synth was someone else's MCU project which I added the scale and second osc to in the code. I didn't get to 2 minutes by the end of the score, so I kept going, kind of a reinterpretation of the score in the second part, but with more about how I've been feeling about the weather lately. The 10th itself was relatively mild, though!
The second half sounds better than the first; I should have done more takes, but the synth needs an enclosure, and is now so light that moving the MIDI din cable was knocking it off my desk, so I didn't want to risk breaking the thing.
The 'title' is there to have a title-trying to use that scale and all made me think of other places' weather.

Disquiet Junto Project 0106: Sonar Vortex

Planning/Composing/Recording

- I used the temperatures from Orlando, Florida on 2014/1/10.
- Three arrays of temps were used: max, actual/projected, and mean.
- 24 temps in each array - one for each hour in the day.
- The Fahrenheit temps aligned with midi notes, so I wrote a program in ChucK to play the three arrays of notes. The mean temp (lowest notes) was taken down one octave.
- The notes were quite somber and that drove the decision on instruments.
- The tone of the piece led to the title. We hang our hats (plans) on the weather forecasts, yet like to forget it is always a probability and not a 100% guaranteed outcome. The fat tails on the bell curve do pop up once in a while (blind squirrel phenomenon).

Lament For Probability [disquiet0106-sonarvortex]

It was a really busy weekend, so I didn't have time to work on this project till Sunday night. It's summer all-year round in Singapore. I'll just sum up my experiences of heat and humidity at various places on Jan 10 in the form of a sound collage.  

I attended a church wedding of a lovely couple in the morning.  Both bride/groom are DJs and music label owners. Never thought I would meet and chat up with their special guest - the legendary chicago house vocalist and DJ, Robert Owens at the church. 

Coincidentally, one of the topics that we talked about is the extreme cold weather in the US. He is currently based in London and mentioned how he had forgotten to bring more light clothing for the warm and humid weather in Singapore. 

8 am (24°C) 
- A chilly morning. Woke up and get ready.

A piece for solo violin, fog, and cursing violin player.

Weather data taken from nearest weather station (Oakland Airport) for January 10th, 2014. Image for track shows data used.

After complaining that the bay area has horrible weather to make music around, I decided to incorporate our weather celebrities (or at least a reasonable graphical facsimile) into the piece

Music for piece is generated from weather data for the day. 1 bar = 1 hour, 24 bars in the piece, using the temperature from one hour to the next to set the step range for notes in the bar. For instance, if the temperature went up 3 degrees, any note in the 3 steps from the starting temperature of the hour could show up in the measure. Note length and choice within range is random because I ran out of time to keep tying variables to properties.

Music is rendered to a texture that is then applied to a rectangle in a 3D context. As the piece is played, the renderer keeps track of which hour is being played (via time since loading piece rendering program). During hours where there was fog cover in the bay area (the name of the piece is taken from Karl the Fog, because we name our fog here), a fog effect is applied to the 3d context, equal to the amount of the hour that had fog. 

For instance, on Jan 10th, there was fog from 5:30am to around noon. So from 5-6, a half amount of the maximum fog is applied. 6-noon, the full amount is applied. At noon, the fog tapers off for a couple of hours, until the piece is clear again. Due to the way the music is rendered, the fog distorts the stave lines, making it difficult to see note placement and length, allowing the player to either try and discern the piece through the fog, make something up, or both (like I did in this rendering of it).

Note that this is my first time playing violin in 15 years, hence using 4 beats per bar, at 48 bpm to just barely put me over the 2 minute mark. Both my sight reading and my violin playing are rusty, to say the least. :)

I can’t read a score, but since I often take the visual qualities of waves into account when building tracks, I decided to try and recreate the graphic produces by the weather site in sonic terms… which probably means the same thing. 

All sounds were sampled from various works in progress.

The grey areas were represented by three rising and falling drones; the volatility of the afternoon weather by thick, deep drones with spiralling qualities; the hourly temperature “points” by two different sets of treated blips, six for AM and six in the PM. Each was pitch shifted according to the temperature it represented, with a full tone as one degree (approximately). Since the drones are made from the basic “pip” sound, they have a pitch-bending effect on each other.

One was also converted into a wavering, track-length drone representing the bar at the bottom showing the wind directions and intensity.

Since each “blip” can be treated and adjusted individually, there is a total of nineteen tracks.

DESCRIPTION 
After three days of record-setting cold, Friday 1/10 was delightful by comparison...a high of 39 F. An old Casio guitar and Guitar Rig provided some effects that evoked the mood I was after. I improvised while staring at the weather graph and can't guarantee a literal translation of the graphical elements into what was played...but there you have it.

I live in Illinois. 
I flew out of Chicago just barely missing the subzero temps & snow on my way to California. 
I "worked" on this while in San Francisco, home of the project's founder. 
I used the program Coagula by Rasmus Ekman which translates images into sound.

I cheated the weather and the assignment.

It was given an output range of 50-10000Hz. 
Then i cropped the lower portion of the image that represents time of day and wind direction.

This image was dropped into Coag and given an output range of 20-50Hz. 
These were multitracked in Cubase. 
I doubled the low freq track and put it through a distortion plug-in. This track was given an envelope roughly equivalent to the graphical representation of 1/10/14's temperature curve in my current home town (as shown in attached image).

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications.
