babe wake up a new Associate mix is out 😍

@poly-chain very much takes electronic much into the future. The Kyiv artist born Sasha Zakrevska uses IDM, electro, and techno as building blocks to construct her own eerie, intense, and atmospheric sound worlds that are as cinematic as they are physical. Her edgy melodies are inventive, and her machine rhythms are hugely distinctive. She has not only written solo albums but has composed for theatre and museums, collaborated with Nene H, and released charity albums for Ukraine as part of her ongoing musical resistance.  

For this week's podcast, Poly Chain has sent us the recording of the very special live show she played at Dekmantel Festival this summer. It is an absorbing hour of beatless sound that will move you as much as any drum track. There are storytelling chapters to the set that takes you from darkened underworlds to starry cosmic expanses as the moods go from reflective and calming to more intense and unsettling. It is very much the sound of tomorrow, today.

Dekmantel Podcast 450 - Poly Chain

This earth year began as Duke Barron Dumbarton II (DBDII as he prefers) transmitted his spirit and mind into another WWE Champion Wrestler thereby prolonging his rule another 60 years. His most pressing earth challenge remained his search for potable water for the manicured lawns of his relatives. 

He commissioned a spacecraft hastily titled "Sergeant Arthur MacBadass" for the regrettably named "Doritos' Cool Ranch Cool Space Mission Sweepstakes IV".  By design, the craft could travel to numerous galaxies, but poor navigation and the in-flight conflicts generated by DBDII for his amusement hindered any measurable progress. The craft was thereby confined to traveling among the moons of Jupiter. Ganymede in the Jovian system was encrusted with wudder/ice, rendering it impenetrable, and no craft dared enter Europa after DBDII's physical altercation with the Intercontinental Planetary Naming Convention (IPNC). The IPNC took particular exception to renaming all known Milky Way Galaxy moons after DBDII's favorite luncheon meats and cheese spreads. 

DBDII also despised the word Europa because the Earth Zone of the same name had been long overtaken by African super scientists. These superior minds harmonized sound waves to dramatically increase technological development in the now dominant global South. New Ghana's space program alone colonized entire galaxies with her peaceful inhabitants and sublime Sly and Robbie recordings broadcasted among the stars and planets. Ultimately, "Europa" was one of many multisyllabic words forbidden in DBDII's presence.

I digress. Badass was left to search either Io or Callisto due to a bitter dispute from the two Blackrock executive's daughters on board, Braighlynne and McKennah. The transmission features so many biting, pressurized snares attempting to shield the bickering, no speech from the craft was quite audible. Callisto's atmosphere also distorted the communique with its pulsating sound waves ever which increased in frequency as the crew sat prone playing Valorant hurtling toward the moon's core. The scientists originally charged to decipher the cacaphonous mess were unmotivated because, after 17 terms of inbreeding and corruption, DBDII's only available currency was illusory promises of back rubs written on cocktail napkins. 

While "Doritos' Cool Ranch Cool Space Mission Sweepstakes IV '' will become DBDII's greatest success in 120 years in office, only 40 gallons of water were able to reach Earth. Actually, these 40 gallons mostly evaporated upon reentry into the atmosphere. DBDII was no less delighted that the lawns of his progeny could be gently moistened for about 6 afternoons. 

So the only remnant of the mission is the mix you hear today. Are the changes reflective of heavy wind patterns or McKennah's violent instrument operation? Are the squelches from Callisto's many HAM radio hobbyists? Do the metallic sounds symbolize dialog with the wise Callistonians or the dying screams of the Badass occupants? Do the final 5 minutes of the recording indicate the onboard computer's joyous discovery of perfect lawn care H2O deep within the planet? 

It is left to the discerning Distant Signal ears for interpretation.”

Associate is a sentient being located in the USandA capital, Washington, DC. He can be seen in his verdant neighborhood, brooding about with headphones, probably greeting a dog and scowling at its hooman. Musically, he is a polymath. Raised on WGPR, WJLB, 89X, WJZZ, WDET, and Electrifying Mojo, he really has no music core at this point. Groove, weird, swing, and sometimes minimalism are a feature but not a trait. He hosts parties as Midwest Plenty once he has saved enough disposable income set ablaze on luxury items for his treasured guests. Additionally, he plays party music with the group Midnight FM. Well, if you consider Joy Division party music, that is what he plays.

Equally comfortable playing peak time club sets or deeper introspective selections, Emily Jeanne has found her own niche sitting at the borders of many sounds and never steering too far in any one direction. Expect cutting edge sounds ranging from cutting edge techno music to the outer limits of experimental drone/ambient and everything in between.

Preview: MNMT - Une Autre Perspective EP [FSSR004]

There is no one quite like Jamal Moss aka Hieroglyphic Being in today’s electronic music scene. A Chicago native who runs the Mathematics label and releases on Rvng Intl, Soul Jazz and Ninja Tune, he is a raw, uncompromising and experimental live act and producer who operates right on the fringes of house, acid and techno. As such, he very much embodies the contemporary Windy City sound having first been taken under the wing of Adonis way back when. The charismatic Moss has put out music on Creme Organization, Further and Planet Mu, is a notoriously analogue centric artist and releases an awful lot of essential music on a regular basis.

And a lot of it is showcased in this podcast, which was a live and fully improvised three hour session recorded on a Friday night at Secret Service on November 20th 2015 in Minneapolis. The raw, expressive set really showcases the breadth and depth of Moss’s sound. Ranging from prickly and abstract to melodically inventive, acid laced and dark, it is a truly textural affair that never stops evolving from start to finish.

MSJY (formerly Miss Jay)(@jockey_jay)has a foot in many different scenes and brings them together in bold, brazen sets. A core part of the team at OOST club in the North of the Netherlands and with former residencies at Noorderling and Griessmuehle, her sonic character continually changes. She often  weaves bass heavy sounds, dark vibrations and dense IDM into logic-defying musical journeys that counter the dark dark and light sides of her personality in compelling conceptual ways.

Ahead of putting together this week's mix, the artist rewatched the newest Blade Runner and got inspired by the scenic shots. "I tried to imagine what my soundtrack to adventures in that world could look like. I guess you could call it post-apocalyptic dystopian energy with a hopeful end but approachable sound." The result is a cinematic mix that uses atmospheric ambient and minimal drum & bass rhythms to set the scene, build the tension, and take you from moments of thrilling intensity to brain cleansing calm.
