A. Im a lover of mushrooms, plants, rocks, animals (and also, all their medicines), animism, yoga, farmers markets, poetry, resistance, mutual education, land back, shamxnism/transformation, tribal music, folk music, all music and cats. I like making lists and they're usually too long lol

Q. How long have you been a part of the NY music scene?  
A. Ive been in NYC for 16 years 🙈 I used to do events for years and stopped due to exhaustion (and probably inexperience). Thinking of getting back into it in a fuck capitalism kinda way due to recent events 

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. I randomly started this playlist like a year ago with Matthew Herbert "Nine Seeds of Navdanya", Donato Dozzy "AA Side - Original Mix", Xcor "Translation" and Lucy "Meetings with Remarkable Entities" and added a track+ every month or so.  I tend to start journey mix ideas with four or five tracks that give vibe, and go from there. Id say most of these tracks live in the pan shamxnistic "techno" folder in my brain, but also give me "angelic", "enlightenment", and "animism".

"Beneath the cold and iced ledges inside a cavernous cutout through the mountain, an eternal flame blazes and heats the air. The heat circulates the cave. A nearby river splashes into the cave, periodically hitting its flame, never enough to put it out, but just so that it conducts a great steam. A deep reddish hue glows from the flames, blurred with the steam, its bright halo spills out of the cave. 

Beings across the starscape know about this spot. They fly, swim, teleport and dance into it. The sounds of their movements, murmurings and exhales become one with the cycle of heat ensnaring the space.

A large stick brought into the cave by wind strikes the wall, which carries the vibrations and sounds of the heat, pressure, cold waves, and steam cycling. Its sound reverberates from the atoms of the heat and echoes on the walls of the cave. The sound carries across the cold water channel, outward into the depths of the unknown.

Listening through a seashell on the other end of the ocean, is a being playing in the sound, called to hold up the shell to their ear and hear how it was forged. The creatures of the ocean swim through certain sections of the water, where they know the transmission will be reverberant. Like swimming through radio signals, the path from the cave is well traveled.

You are now traveling through the water’s transmission carrying the sound."

Malzof is a DJ and Intermedia Artist based in Pittsburgh, USA and a resident of Sweet Abyss. Malzof plays abstracted grooves- weaving together melodies and rhythms across genre, BPM and era into sonic journeys. Spanning ambient, experimental, broken beat and multiple genres of house, techno and beyond, their sets enchant the dance floor with blissed out beats, fun and freaky vocals, psychedelic percussions and environmental sounds.

With a creative background in video production, live visuals and installation art since the late 2000s, Malzof has taken inspiration from their live performance style to inform the ways in which they DJ, make music and engage with the audience. Across mediums, they are inspired by the synesthetic connection between seeing, hearing and feeling; natural and industrial elements; and exploring community histories of liberation and joy.

The last six months have found me seriously reconsidering my relationship to the dance floors I've grown up on, processing regret, guilt and shame for whatever part I've played in upholding the institutions that are holding us all back. Stark-realizations-I’ve-been-ignoring-for-literal-years type beats. 

This is a recording of me closing out our first weekend Sorry Records party at Nowadays from 3:30am to just after 5am on April 5th 2024. I must admit I kinda blacked out for this set and at first I felt as if I didn't exactly achieve what I set out to do. I love closing parties but must admit I found it particularly tough to DJ the way I want to and find a truly joyful and natural improvisational flow when I’m hosting the party and have been on my feet being social for 7+ hours.

Just like my first set at the club (which is archived as my Spontaneous Affinity mix), I aimed for this set to speak on my personal relationship to this music and the spaces that form around it. While that first set was about looking back, this one found me trying to address the present moment as well as express a genuine hope for the future.
