M1 playing melodic sequence (all black, 4-5 oct) in random seq; KB>CUT
M2 playing wind/bird sound. slow/random LFO-TRI controls mix knob. EG of M1 controls attenuated VCO1V/OCT of M2, which has high res as well. VCF controls VCA, giving a very slight LFO on the amplitude of the wind, although VCA is always open. All of this gives us a seagull-like sound going back and forth with some noise/wind that changes with random/slow LFO_TRI.
Lexicon mod_delay with max variation gives a tape warble, and arena rev gives that "infinite" reverb.

I've never made VGM music before, and was told to make it as 16-bit genesis as possible. I was also told to use odd time signatures, so here's my first crack at 16-bit VGM in 5/4! Please critique critically as hard as possible.

All sounds use the VSTi Genny, which emulate the YM2612 and SN76489 chips found in the Sega Genesis. However, I don't fully grasp FM, and couldn't quite get the exact sounds I wanted, and I used external FX which I'm sure didn't exist with the Genesis.

WORK IN PROGRESS (1st draft)
The following are several rough drafts of a handful of songs I am working on for my first OST and introduction to vgm and fm synths. All tracks loop twice.

All sounds from Genny VSTi, a virtual instrument that emulates the YM2612 and SN76489 chips found in the Sega Genesis, except for a couple sounds from 3xOsc.
All FX are stock FL Studio.

The purpose of this project was to make a soundtrack that sounds like old Sega Genesis games with my own twist. Multiple genres and time signatures were heavily encourages. Making 16-bit metal/punk in 5/8 utilizing only FM synths was an extremely fun challenge. FX were allowed to be used that may not have been realistic to emulate on the Sega Genesis.

Writing process:
I use FL Studio as my DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). This game's design takes a modern approach at the Sega Genesis style, so I match that with my music by primarily using a VSTi (virtual instrument) named Genny, which is a Sega Genesis FM sound chip emulator.

I generally start with a Genny preset,, and then twiddle some knobs, change algorithms, or add layers as I see fit. That way, the sound is still Genesis-inspired, but original.

The pad that plays in the beginning/throughout is a good example of envelope generators in FM synth. Making the attack longer allows the sine waves to slowly sweep and change into something a lot more complex.

I'm awful at making drum sounds in Genny, so I stick to Genesis sample packs and modify pitch/time, EQ, or add fx.

Sometimes a bass or lead need an extra oomph, or I want a portamento (slide) and can't figure out how to do that in Genny, so I add a 3xOsc (a free built-in synth in FL studio that's rather bare-bones and is a fantastic introduction to synthesis).
What's strange is how out of tune Genny is. To make everything sound nice, I have to tune the 3xOsc a whole-step up (C becomes D) and also fine tune by about 40 cents (cents are a logarithmic unit of measurement used for musical intervals. There are 100 cents between semitones, so the pitch difference between an A and an A# is 100 cents). I kind of like that everything is not in conventional tuning.

The song is in 7/4 (or 7/8? I never understood the difference). The wooden arpeggio at the beginning almost loops as if it's in 3/4, and the snare acts as if it's in 4/4, so you can bop.

Glitchy IDM-ish hat because why not?
