A master of lovelorn emotional surrender, Volor Flex brings his narrative to an end with Sabo, his fourth and last album under this alias. The reasons are only his to know, but Volor Flex certainly won't be this producer's final musical persona. Parts of Sabo already hint at subtle changes in direction and style - natural consequences of artistically perfecting oneself - showcasing even more of Volor's expert manipulation of samples and composer skills. 

Volor Flex's reputation and popularity have been steadily on the rise for the past two years; he has released 3 albums and 3 EPs, all representative of what it means to brilliantly adapt the specifics of a signature style while living up to the staple sound itself. The man who has been referred to as Burial 2.0, Alex Frolov of Syktyvkar, Komi Republic, Russia delivers us a complete, 20-track long, intensely introspective album, possibly his finest work to date. 

Sabo is laden with familiar bittersweet moods made of crisp, dancy garage breaks paired with artfully constructed soundscapes as fragile as glass that Volor peels back until they break apart and fade away. All twenty tracks enclose the darnkess of the boreal forest, the harshness of the tundra, the anxiousness of isolation, the solace of being lost in thought and the memories of a loved one. Volor Flex adds a new expanse to the timeless comfort area that he's been building and has now completed, a place of relief and daydreaming the listener will repeatedly want to come back to.

By now I'm sure you are all painfully aware of the horrific extrajudicial murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis MN and subsequent protests that have been met with shocking acts of police brutality. Sadly this is only the most recent example of an innocent black citizen being murdered in cold blood at police hands, and until major changes are made it likely will not be the last. This is the direct result of a long history of systematic, institutionalized racism that dates back to the very founding of modern policing and beyond.

The music that we promote and that we love is forever indebted to the work of black artists going back across generations. To remain silent and complicit in their suffering, while also profiting off the back of a culture that they built, would be an act of inexcusable hypocrisy and is not something that we could keep a clean conscience with.

Dead Pest Records is committed to supporting the rights and freedoms of black & POC communities, both in The Unites States and worldwide. We stand in solidarity with all victims of racial abuse and discrimination, and of police brutality. We are dedicated to materially providing Mutual Aid to these communities in whatever ways we can in the hope that this can be of some benefit in building a more equal and egalitarian society for all.

As a label, and as people, we are staunchly in permanent opposition to racism, fascism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, colonialism, imperialism, economic inequality and 'The Police' as an institution. Hello Aranha, it's a pleasure to get you on this series. what would you say is your favorite track from this mix?

Pleasure to be on it. All things considered It'd probably have to be the third track, my remix of Grey.scale's "Rites of Passage". It originally started off as a wonky halfstep 160 track but i think the slower tempo lets the wonkiness shine a bit more. I also really like the bass I have for it. The was a vocal sample in the original I stretched out and processed a bunch then just laid a big sub under it.

Who/what are some of your biggest influences when it comes to making your music?

I've always had quiet an eclectic taste in music and I really appreciate producers who can take a stab at a bunch of genres. Also as well just growing up near croyden as dubstep was really taking off was quite inspiring. Just conceptually the idea a genre starting there and then being made all over the world really resonated with me.  

How do you split your time between running the three labels you're a part of and producing your own music?

Poorly usually. I'm lucky that I have help with most of the projects and have recently moved and been able to dedicate a room just to music stuff, which can help to compartmentalise things and get me in the mood to produce or work on label stuff a bit quicker. I terms of my own production I'll usually fire up my DAW at least once a day, even if its just to practice something specific or make presets for myself. Most of my tracks have come from that experimentation process. The final track in the mix was just me trying to use as much music theory I've een reading about as I can.


What's one of your favorite releases you've heard this year?

I've really been digging a lot of the White Peach releases this year, particularly the Rygby release, just super fresh sounding. In:Flux have been smashing it this year too, really cool stuff coming from them. For faster stuff Trax Haven have been having a sick year too


Anything else to say to the heads?

Just big up to Grey.scale and all the Dead Pest Records artists. Plenty coming from us soon. I run a show on Mode, 3-5pm fourth sunday of every month
