I met Joe when I first moved up to Manchester, mostly hanging out at Bakk Heia parties, which were incredibly formative for me.
Even though I’ve known him for a couple years, I’d never heard him talking about djing or putting together mixes, I mostly knew him for his amazing cooking (currently at @erst_mcr) and photography.
So when he sent me his ‘Cafe Tekla 001’ mix, I was excited to hear what he’d created. The music lied somewhere between eerie lounge music, sound collage and outsider jazz. It’s tone was fairly laid back, but never verged into easy listening territories, scratching musical itches, rather than just massaging them.
The mix he’s contributed does exactly the same thing. I love it.

I met Sean 2 or 3 years ago, we bonded over a love of 90s punk and harsher guitar music. Since then I've seen Eat Paint, a night he co-runs, grow into one of my favourite showcases for forward thinking dance music. His sets carry a frantic energy whether he plays low tempo dancehall or footwork, and any time I hear him play I think about how the distorted breaks and rave stabs carry similarities to the punk we spoke about when we first met. I invited him on the show to hear what he might play outside of a club environment.

I remember once at a party, Amy came up to me saying that she felt weird and was going for a lie down, thinking about what podcast she could listen to. I recommended the Suzanne Kraft album 'What You Get For Being Young' to her. At that time I was also feeling weird in general, and when I had put it on in the past, the collage of digital textures and indiscernible melodies stopped me from analysing what I was listening to or anything else going on in my head.

Forty minutes later she returned from her lie down, sharing similar sentiments of appreciation for the sound design and the coming-of-age moodiness hinted at in the album's title.

A couple months later, I saw a play she had written and was performing in called 'Handle With Care'. I've not interacted much with theatre in the past couple years, mostly due to the fact that all I was really exposed to when I was younger were musicals and naturalistic plays. 'Handle With Care' approached identity in the digital age like nothing I'd seen before. It blended projected montages of digitally distorted images, experimental poetry, performance art and beautifully selected music (including 'Further' from 'What You Get For Being Young') in ways that I don't think can be represented on screen, it changed my perception of what can be achieved with live performance and made me reevaluate how digital artforms can be presented in physical realms.

I was interested to hear what she would create in the audio realm, and she has contributed a beautiful collage of poetry, voice notes and music, as an ode to Black Britain.

The foundation of our friendship has always been odd music. I’d like to think that as I’ve gotten older, my taste in music has evolved , but remembering the weird stuff we’d listen to when we were 13 and comparing it to what we still send to each other today, I see that not much has changed.

The music Liv has shown me over the years has always had an uncanny quality. Familiar and comforting, but with a beautiful eeriness. The mix she’s put together reflects this perfectly, songs with recognisable elements, that sound like they’ve been remixed in an alternate universe.

dithering Presents 'An Unfounded History Of Jungle' 12/03/23

Basketball was the first thing that formed a bond between me and Beku. Our appreciation of 80s and 90s era NBA culture led us on to inevitable conversations about golden era NY hip hop. 

Unlike the majority of DJs I know, Beku’s main purpose for digging is looking for samples in the beats he makes. He’ll show you a flamenco record he found for a pound at a charity shop, which is beautiful in its own right, then with a sneaky grin play the hardest boom bap beat you’ve ever heard that he made with it.

There’s a lot more I could say about him.. his killer feel for the drums, his knowledge of pre-invasion communist Grenada or his love of Halifax Town FC, but I think you’d be stuck reading this for a while. All you need to know is that he’s the bomb and it’s not often you’re able to hear an hour of his tunes so listen up !!
