After a gorgeous Easter long weekend here, my thoughts have turned to summer. Not quite there yet, but enough warmth to think of gardens, colour and...the arrival of ominous smog and haze of urban centers. I relocated from the urban sprawl of what we called "The Big Smoke" of the Toronto area.  I think, the threat of air pollution, especially in the sweltering heat of summer, always makes me mindful of the thin line and tipping point (1.5 degrees C) of global warming. The summer of 2023 left much of North America reeling from the haze of smoke from hundreds of wildfires in Canada's north.Wearing masks to protect, not from Covid, from PM (particulate Matter of 2.5 in Ontario! Toronto was the worst for particulate matter in the world in June 2023)

EXEMPLARY

Not far from Jena, in Thuringia, there is small village hidden in the forest, a valley away from through roads. It’s called Tautenburg, this year it celebrates its 800 th anniversary.

Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) spent his summer retreat there in 1882, walking, writing on „Die fröhliche Wissenschaft“ (translated as "The Gay Science",  „The Joyful Wisdom“ or „The Joyous Science“).
And awaiting the arrival of Lou Andreas-Salomé (1861-1937), a widely travelled Russian writer, narrator, essayist and psychoanalyst.
 
The refrain quotes a short poem he wrote to her. (translation mainly by machine)
