I composed this piece after experiencing severe depression from bipolar disorder and resolving to use the lessons I learned to help others. The contrasting sections represent different times in my life. Those familiar with J.S. Bach's "Durch Adams Fall Ist Ganz Verderbt" will notice the bass line of that piece juxtaposed in the conflicted sounding section, and bassoons (my primary instrument) end the piece.

I wrote this piece several years ago when the leaves were falling, and I was yearning for snow. For the contrasting middle section of this piece, I imagined a 19th Century courtship happening at a barn dance on a cold late fall/early winter night. The end brings us a bolder version of the intro theme as winter snows arrive.
