T'as l'air d'une chanson (You've the air of a song)

Phonica Records is extremely proud to unveil the next release on its Special Editions imprint; the stunning debut album ‘Vuduwave’ by Niños Indigo.

Niños Indigo is the alias of audiovisual artist Valeria Hernandez. Developed over the course of a month, the album was recorded in Hernandez’s home country of Chile and recorded in a single week, resulting in a flowing, organic yet otherwordly listening experience.

Valeria explains; “This record is a compilation of influences that have been inside me a long time... they keep coming back; Afro drums, Hindu instruments, Candombe, Psychedelia in South America. The rhythm of what surrounds me; the lake, the forest near where I live, the calm that surrounds it, the love of my friends and daughter. All of these feelings are what I like to put in my songs, a reminder to value the simple, to seize the resources that I have and to try and free myself of what’s on my mind.”

Originally released on digital and cassette label Discos Cetaceos in 2014, it’s a recording that truly deserves to be given a new lease of life on vinyl.

Migrations is a work for electronics (tape and two stereo sets), string quartet, and four flutes. The work explores movement, transience, unrest, and the unfamiliar: commonplace sounds become disconnected from their sources and drift in patterns of migration within the performance space. Field recordings—which document various journeys in the Paris metropolitan rapid transit system—have been assembled into a lyrical montage, paying homage to Pierre Schaffer’s work in musique concrète and acousmatic listening.

Migrations offers the listener space to reflect on one of the defining elements of the contemporary zeitgeist: displacement, and its effect on the human condition. In a world where the global has, in many ways, become the local, what does it mean to feel at home?

3/28/2020 - I am sharing a musical oddity born out of “Shelter-at-Home” and the urgent need to create. This is the first “dan” of the Japanese koto classic “Rokudan” recorded on seven differently pitched shakuhachi. You are hearing one single melody that I overdubbed with instruments tuned to E, Eb, D, Db, C, B, and A. If I had more flutes in different keys I would have included those to add to the general cacophony.  So here goes – listen up – and if you make it to the end, please let me know.
