Flagging in LA! April 2025

For this July 2024 mix, I've got a selection of house and nudisco tracks!

Most of my mixes form around an idea, but the idea with this mix is just a certain sound - a clear, clean mix, with a great separation between each instrument and the vocals (perhaps best exemplified by Optical Disco's superb remake of the classic, "The Rhythm of the Night").

I've got many tracks in this style - about half are new, and about half are recent remakes, with a modern feel that really breathes new life into them.   I'm particularly fond of the first track, a remake of "I Ain't Got Time", and track six, "Looks Like I'm In Love Again".

Ooh What a Life - NuDisco & House

Welcome to my favorite hour of my favorite day of the entire year.  It's hard to put into words how special this day is and what it means to me and so many others but I'll try...

Picture it --> 200 of the most beautiful humans to walk this earth on a private beach.   Love, unspeakable joy and a rare Spirit have ruled the day.  And now...the golden hour is upon us.  The sun is slowly lowering towards the horizon of the Pacific ocean and every one and everything is awash in the most breathtaking golden yellow light.  There's a magic in the air that just can't be described.  

I consider every hour important when I'm spinning but I will say that I consider this hour THE hour where, with the right music selections, I can take people's hearts and emotions and send them places that every human should dream to go.  

This set starts with galloping, emotional anthems and slowly ebbs towards a nostalgic soft landing where I pull out Sarah McLaughlin "Silence", Stereolove Feat. Brian Kennedy "Life, Love & Happiness", Christian Burns "Wonderful Life", Lighthouse Family "High" and Beth Orton "Central Reservation".  Everyone was in emotional overload with the gorgeous trance anthems I was playing as we were emerging out of the day's peak...and then as I went into the nostalgia set I just kind of sent everyone over the edge.  

We are a blessed tribe with a long history together.  To get to create and take part in the unspeakable joy that unfolded was a blessing I'll always cherish.  

As always, this set was brought to you with every ounce of love that I've got to give.  I hope it touches your heart as much as it did mine and so many others as Epic Maui Journey came to an emotionally powerful conclusion.  

*I edited this set to remove the very ending of the day, as I was playing more downbeat songs that were perfect for the moment but wouldn't have exactly made sense in podcast form.  I feel that the songs I played at the very end of the day were special and to be enjoyed only in that very moment.

We say this every year...but wow, what a day it was on the beach.  Every year we don't think the joy and euphoria can be topped from the previous year and then, just like magic, the joy and the euphoria is totally off the charts.  This year was epic in every way.  Now...about the music: if you've been a follower of mine for years then you'll know I am insanely critical of myself when it comes to my DJ performances.  I believe that the (beat) mixing component of the art is as important as the musical selections.  Luckily I was "on" this day. I'm still kind of glowing from Flagging In The Desert in Palm Springs on Saturday. Getting to do what I love so much while being surrounded by people that I love so incredibly gives me a feeling that's pretty much impossible to describe. Thank you to all of you that were there surrounding me giving me so much happiness. Your energy feeds my soul. Now...about this music: it's a sound that I've loved forever but don't push forward in my sets very often. For FITD I decided to play house music only; concentrating on a sound that was sometimes deep and funky, sometimes piano-laden, sometimes disco-centric and sometimes driving and uplifting. But the common theme was house music. I had the time of my life and I hope that you'll hear it in this live recording (#1 of 4). The rest of the set will be up shortly. In the meantime...enjoy the beginning of the day. From my heart...to yours.

Flagging In The Desert #1

I like a lot of music but I reserve LOVE for very few pieces of music. I usually "frame" my mixes around the particular pieces of music that I love the most. Sometimes it will be literally, one song, that the entire set is built for. So I'm really excited to present to you Sophisticated Morning 70. My favorites on this set are the first song by Harry Styles (formerly of One Direction fame) "Falling", the fifth song "Perfect Motion" by Rob Made which is a male vocal remake of the incredible song by Sunscreem, and lastly "Believe" by Zhiko, which is a remake of the massive Cher hit. The sound of this entire mix is built around those 3 songs. I hope that you love what you hear and that it all lifts you up during these hard and challenging times. Sophisticated Morning 70

The art of creating soundscapes is a really tricky thing. There are so many circumstances that go into magic happening and there is never any way to know that it's happened until it's already in process or it's played itself out. I just had one of those really rare experiences; I composed a set that fell together so seamlessly and with such little effort that as I was mixing I couldn't believe that it was happening. I usually put more emphasis on the technical components of a mixed set as much as the messaging of the set. As far as I'm concerned the messaging comes from a higher power and I believe that my intuition won't allow me to put mixed messages together. So typically my obsession during the creating process is on the technical side of it. With this set I completely flipped that script. For this set I obsessed with the messaging. This mix set has been planned for weeks but yesterday I awoke to find out that a friend and mentor had suddenly passed away and it has rattled me deeply. The set of music that I was going to create had to go out the window and I had a day to completely reimagine what this set should sound like. Now that it is finished I really am astounded. Almost every song has hidden or not so hidden messages in it that is relevant to this very moment in my life and the lives of many that surround me. So I hope that you'll hear the peace and love and that the messages will speak to you clearly. As always this music came from the depths of my heart and it gives me life to share it with you. From my heart...to your ears.

DJ Brian Norwood was born during the first seedlings of dance music as we know it today were sprouting. In the 1970s, the Tea Dance at Fire Island's Blue Whale was settling in as ritual and David Mancuso's infamous "The Loft" parties in NYC were just getting started.  Being born in the music-rich environment of Nashville would be a harbinger of things to come. And being born in that era would greatly impact his career. 

In the 90's, Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love, would open its arms to Brian. This move to a more urban environment and being within the twinkle of NYC skyscrapers, is an important transition not only in geography, but of musical awakening.  After attending a seminal Saint-At-Large Party with all its intendant revelry, he felt an overwhelming drive to cultivate music and learn to mix. Vinyl was still the preferred medium for DJ's, which gives Brian the unique perspective of being among the younger DJ's still spinning today who teethed on vinyl.

In the 90s Brian began to play live shows.  His ability to feel the energy of a room and to zero in on what crowds want to hear quickly gained him major name recognition that spread from Philadelphia to the entire nation.  Over the last 25 years the notable gigs he has played are too many to count, but include events in every major American city and as far away as Maui, Hawaii  and Amsterdam, Netherlands.  

In 2011 he began podcasting for the ability to reach even more listeners.  His Mixed Emotions by Brian Norwood podcasts have been streamed hundreds of thousands of times and continue to be a major asset to his musical career.  The sets that have been the most recognized of his work are Sophisticated Morning, Sophisticated Deep, and Sophisticated Chill.  These sets are just as their name implies: percolating, hazy, gently rising to an alert state. However, to those unfamiliar with his breadth of music, it would be unfair to characterize him as a “chill” only DJ.  It is unlikely that you would have heard music and music mixed like this anywhere else. Brian has a style of playing unique, obscure and ethereal songs that is unmistakably his.  This is a true artist that isn't stuck in a genre, who can play for long sets and play to the most demanding crowds. 

It’s difficult to express with words something as nuanced as music by a sublime DJ. But to paraphrase an old saying, you know it when you hear it. He knows how important a crowd is to a DJ and how important a DJ is to a crowd and he chooses cautiously and carefully the live gigs that he plays.
