Description

The “Free” Mixtape celebrates the cultural diversity of music from the African Diaspora. Released in conjunction with the “Juneteenth” holiday, this mix emphasizes freedom in mind, spirit, diversity, and expression despite the persistent chains of society, in the form of hatred, racism, disparities, and injustice.
 The “Free” mixtape commences with the exhilarating Jazz sounds of “Manteca” by Dizzie Gillepsie, followed by “El Pito” by Cheo Felicano – Joe Cuba Sextet;” Guantanamera,” “La Vida Es Un Carnival,” y “La Negra Tiene Tumbao" by Celia Cruz. The mixtape continues with “Watina” by Calypso Rose, one of this Spring 2022's most highly anticipated collaborations, featuring Carlos Santana and The Garifuna Collective. Maxwell’s Ascension takesthe listening audience into a higher realm with DJ Butta L’s Afrobeat Remix. The Mixtape features local New York artists including King Blak on “Olala” (featuring Lynx Unruly, and Jariel)and Mr. Good Vybz on “El Bam Bam.” From the loving lyrics of Jimmy and Tarrus Riley the mixtape soothes with soulful reggae songs about love and Rhythm and Blues for reflection. The lyrics “Be glad that you are free, free to change your mind, free to go most anywhere, anytime. Be glad that you are free there’s many a man that’s not” and the sounds of slaves marching to freedom in “Free’ by Prince concludes the mix. We are reminded by the iconic artist that many are still physically enslaved through modern day slavery, mass incarceration, sex trafficking etc. We still have a long road to freedom but we can strive to be free in mind and spirit.
