Often in life, the best ideas are the ones we don’t spend too much time labouring over. When the timing and ingredients are right, the results tend to look after themselves. This was definitely the case with Order, the latest EP on Second State and first collaboration between two rather unusual suspects: Brazilian producer and DJ K.A.L.I.L. and New Zealand producer, DJ and promoter Cam Harris.

Harris is an established mover and shaker in the New Zealand party scene and founder of leading events such as Sonorous Festival and La Terrazza. Through his work as a promoter he befriended the legendary D-Nox, and it was while living in Sao Paolo for a few months that D-Nox suggested Harris get in touch with local producer K.A.L.I.L. for some recording sessions. It was a successful match. 

'Order' is big-room techno with a festive fire in its belly. An insistent synth pattern evokes a tribal celebration while a tail-end drone revs like an engine, sure to corral a crowd into a fervor. 'Disorder', as its name suggests, is a slipperier track loaded with motoring synths and a seductive sense of tension that never relaxes its grip. K.A.L.I.L. lends his distorted vocals to this one, uttering the titular word on repeat in a message that is part invitation, part incantation. Berlin-based Second State favorite Rocko Garoni puts his own stamp on the 'Order' remix, a warped, echoing version of events purpose-built for the early hours of the morning after. 

Supported by the remix of a Second State mainstay, this collab EP strongly announces an intercontinental pairing with a promising future: K.A.L.I.L. and Cam Harris!

Premiere: K.A.L.I.L. & Cam Harris - Order

Cam Harris and Rafa Kao are both dedicated and hard working producers that have spent years honing their craft. Cam & Rafa first met in Auckland city dj’n in caves, beaches and clubs over a decade ago. They formed a friendship which has resulted in them working together on several tracks and remixes, as well as their 8 track album called ‘Gratitude’ in 2017. 

Rafa Kao, a Brazilian now residing in Munich, collaborating by sending parts back and forth over the internet just like all their previous work together, ain’t no distance going to wreck these two from making a hit, this collaboration is no different being made during a pandemic global lock-down.

‘Annihilate’ has a energetic rolling bassline, combined with catchy high hats and punchy melodies building to a peak, where the repeating vocal sample orders ‘ Annihilate!’ intensifies and then it drops into a hypnotic whirl of base driven intensity which will drive the dance-floor into annihilation.

From humble beginnings behind a pair of Technics MK5s 23 years ago, Cam Harris has carved a long-standing path through the underground electronic music scene, becoming one of New Zealand’s most consistent and versatile DJs and producers.

Cam’s dedication to the craft saw him share stages with some of the world’s biggest names, including supporting Carl Cox at both PURE NZ events in 2017 and 2018, featuring heavyweight lineups with Adam Beyer, Paco Osuna, Nastia, and KiNK. He’s also brought his sound to iconic festivals such as Rhythm & Vines (2018 & 2019), Splore, Bay Dreams, Shipwrecked, and Sonorous, along with a standout warehouse appearance with Pan-Pot in early 2020.

As a producer, Cam made an international mark with the release of his debut album Gratitude (2017), a collaboration with German-based Brazilian artist Rafa Kao. The project’s lead single was pressed to vinyl for the first time in Cam’s career and became a milestone moment in his discography. His productions have since landed on respected imprints such as Second State, House 4 Life Records, Cabbie Hat Recordings, M5 Records, Tinnie House, and Arrivals Records. His debut on Huhu Records earned a spot in Traxsource’s Top 10 Jackin’ House chart in 2013, and was later recognized among House 4 Life’s best releases in 2017.

Cam’s ability to read a room and stretch deep into extended sets has taken him across the ditch to Australia, where he played a legendary 5-hour Sunday set at Revolver Upstairs in Melbourne, and later closed out the Electric Gardens official afterparty in Sydney.

After spending much of 2019 immersed in the vibrant underground of São Paulo, Cam collaborated with K.A.L.I.L., resulting in a release on Pan-Pot’s Second State – a testament to his ever-expanding global reach and sonic evolution.

With a sound rooted in groove, depth, and connection, Cam continues to push forward – whether behind the decks or in the studio – always with one foot in the underground and his ears tuned to the future.
