"Seattle’s house music mainstay Uniting Souls Music has queued up another of its anticipated label samplers to bring some heat to the winter months. The Winter Soulstice 2021-22 Compilation offers a state-of-the-label overview, featuring cuts from familiar names from the label’s vast discography as well as some inspired newcomers, staying true to the label’s mission to provide a global forum for the music of talented local and West Coast producers.
With a total of 16 tracks, the compilation offers a diverse collection crossing over several genres, from deep to tech, melodic, indie, minimal and even downtempo. Seattle duo FunkTonix kicks things off with a deep banger titled “Calling To Say (I Love You),” punctuated by a hypnotic, sultry vocal peaking into slow-motion distortion for the drop. Sacramento-based Cantos, founder of the reknown HMNI collective, delivers a driving, deep techy groove on “Midnight Run.” Other highlights include tracks by longtime Uniting Souls Los Angeles resident, Jordan Strong (a groovy deep collab with Davey Shindig); veteran Vancouver B.C. producer Sean Dimitrie (Bombay Records); two tracks by Seattle house pioneer Jon Lee (one as part of the duo Lee Houser, the other a collab with L.A.’s Idean Hashemi); the dreamy haunting melodic techno vibes of “She’s Out There,” by San Diego’s Terry Jasinto; three deep, soulful, funky numbers by NorCal veterans DJ Sulli, DJ 5657, and Fresh Farm label boss Nick Garcia; four outstanding tracks by rising Seattle newcomers D.Guti (minimal deep tech), Sam Hipp (deep driving), Drawbird (melodic/proggy vibes), and Tait Modern (bass-heavy banger). The album closes with two slower tempo grooves – L.A.’s Germano Kuerten & DJ DP’s aptly-titled indie dance rendition “Feelin’ Like Uhhh;” and lastly, the dubby, percussive, ethnic-flavored debut solo release by the talented Seattle producer Michelle Kestrel (formerly of Madly in Dub), whose skills as an experienced live tabla player are highlighted in her organic downtempo track “Zohra.”

Seattle's house music institution Uniting Souls continues pushing the strong vibes in 2022, marking the collective's impressive 25th year. The top-notch releases see no sign of stopping as Cantos' Underground People EP is the latest from the seasoned crew to drop on global dancefloors. Cantos is known for his memorable HMNI warehouse parties and the community that it created, as well as bumpin' releases for Selekta, LTHM, CPR Digital, and his own HMNI imprint. The Underground People EP features four new cuts primed and ready for funked-up nightclub action.

The EP opens with the crisp percussion and vibrant chords of "I-5 South." The rhythm is steady and pulsing, feeling like a night drive down a secluded highway. The evocative mid-section breakdown adds an air of mystery to the affair. "My Dog Barks" starts with a flurry of electronic hand percussion, giving this one a pronounced tribal flair. Strange sounds and effect-laden swishes provide an almost ominous flavor over the house beats. A treat for the after-hours, "Love Like Mine" is dark and deep, complete with growling bass hits, persistent tom-drums, and echoed vocal phrases. "Underground People" closes the EP with a potent four-on-the-floor builder as spoken vocal samples, synth hits, and blasts of high-frequency melody combine to give the floor its peak-time moment.
