In September 2022 I took part in the following feature for the 'Introducing' radio show on BBC Hereford and Worcester...

"The Collaborator Generator musically matchmakes two acts - live on-air - and gives them a week to write a track together! And, you guessed it, neither of them know who they'll be collaborating with until that very moment..."

I was paired with Gues:t, a drum and bass producer. 

This is what we came up with in 7 days!

G:uest made the drum tracks, sub bassline and FX. I made the melodic bassline, heavily delayed horn stabs, vocal sample and drum roll and piano melody. I also re-arranged Guest's original sructure.

12 years ago I recorded this mix, before the days of sites such as soundcloud and mixcloud. It might have been on myspace. I stocked cd copies in some local shops, never knowing who had ever listened to it.

I came across it again recently and realised that I'd like to share it with you know in 2019. I used software to overlay scratching, juggles and sound fx. It took dozens of hours to piece together. 

I'm still very proud of it and there are some killer tunes on there that deserve to be revived through this mix.

Cut La Vis - "Think Back"   from CLOUDWATCHING 2 (Riddim Fruit)

Recorded while at University in 2000, this is a no-frills, rough-around-the-edges all vinyl mix. No multi-tracking, overlaying scratches or FX, just a one take deal, errors, needle skips and all.

I hadn't heard this mix for 2o years before I unearthed the original cassette recently. I was expecting it to be a little more random in it's journey as I was still very much learning how to DJ with Hip Hop, having been a drum and bass head previously.  but I'm pleasantly surprised how it ebbs and flows. Starting quite low-key, it moves through bass-heavy UK rap, some tracks featuring sick turntablism from Deck Wrecka, DJ Revolution etc before ending on West Coast stuff from J5, Ozomatli and People Under The Stairs. 

I remember mixing in my halls of residence room a lot instead of studying around this time. Great memories of University friends and adventures come flooding back when I listen to this mix.

A Social Bliss Dance Ting

Brighton-based Cut La Vis has made a name for himself with his brand of skanking, bass-heavy productions, remixes, mash ups and DJ sets. Combining influences from his Hip Hop background with soundsystem culture, dub, reggae, dancehall, ska and afrobeat, his music has moved crowds at festivals and venues in the UK and abroad.

His debut album One Step Forward,released through NICE UP! Records in 2015, saw some of the most respected artists in the UK reggae/hip hop scenes riding his productions. Featuring Tippa Irie, Eva Lazarus, MysDiggi, Peppery, Lotek and more it lead to two tours of Greece in 2015 and 2016, including a headline slot at Secret Sound Festival.

Cut La Vis is a veteran of the UK festival circuit, having performed alongside UK Hip Hop legend MysDiggi (f.k.a. Mystro) at Boomtown, Shambala, Nozstock and Secret Garden Party. In 2017 he will add Bestival to the list. His DJ sets have taken him to venues in Bristol, Cardiff, London, Leeds, Exeter, Glastonbury and many more locations.
