I’ve been meaning to make this mix for a really long time and whilst I know it won’t be to everybody’s taste, I wanted to showcase some of my favourites tracks from when I first began DJ’ing way back in 2002! I wanted to be able to show people where my love for music started and where for me, it all began.

You may or may not know that when I first started buying vinyl’s and learning to DJ I fell in love with Speed Garage, Bassline House, Funky House and UK Garage - a music genre/scene that dominated Birmingham (my hometown) at the time. 

I started out with some not-so-tight Numark belt drive decks and slowly began teaching myself the art of DJ’ing. When I say slowly, I mean slowly... For a short time I wasn’t even aware that I had to adjust tempo’s to mix a track and it’s safe to say my first couple of weeks practising didn’t sound too great! Fast forward twelve or so years, I’m now living my dream as a DJ! 

I had SO much fun making this mix. It was both an amazing trip down memory lane and a pleasant surprise to realise that I sometimes drop a few tracks in my set now that I played allllllll those years ago! 

I have absolutely no idea if this type of music was being played in your city/scene, wherever that may be around the world, however it’d be interesting to know... What I do know is that these Speed Garage / Bassline vibes were massive in the likes of Birmingham (UK) and Sheffield (UK) in the early 2000’s - if you were a part of the scene back in the day, you need no introduction! 

This two-hour mix consists of 31 tracks that range in release year from 1996 to 2005. These 120 minutes are my ROOTS...

In Curitiba, Brazil, the days are warm, and the nights are long. On the streets of this town, boys become men, and souls are both lost and found. No one knows this better than the artist known as HNQO. As a famed breakdancer in his youth, he went in search of himself, with little more than a dream and the voices of Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash to guide him.
Before long, he was dexterously layering hi hats onto groovy house beats, and chopping hip--‐hop vocals with a soft but menacing touch. His music takes hold of you from collar to knee, with cheeky hooks and infectious rhythms. More than a musician, HNQO is an interpreter of the past, fusing elements of hip hop, jazz, and other genres into his very own style of deep house grooves.

Today HNQO (or Henrique as he is known to friends) is one of the fastest rising young stars in the deep house and indie dance scene. Daniel James (Dj-Danny T) - I have always had a love for music, ever since I was a little kid! I started mixing when I was about 14 and fell in love with instantly it. When I started out mixing was a teenager in Leeds back and I was one of the lucky ones who had some of the best club nights and clubs in the UK to go to. In the early nineties when the big clubs, nights and house radio stations like Speed Queen, Casa Loco (Lady Lane), Boiler House (Bradford), Love to be (Mint Club), Club NATO, Up Yer Ronson at the Club Europa, Gatecrasher (Sheffield), Kiss 105 fm, Majestik were all at their height, I started sneaking out of my bedroom window climbing down the kitchen roof and was hitting the amazing Leeds City Centre! This was a massive influence in my musical and social habits which I have today, although I don’t have to climb out of any windows to get into town any more.All of the DJ’s from back then were always mixing out on vinyl, which is what I learnt to mix on. I started off with some Stanton belt drives before begging and pleading with my parents to buy me some Technics 1210’s, which took me about 2 years to get! I love to dust off the Vinyl I have, so I generally play both when the venue has 1210’s!!! I love the musical roots I got in Leeds in the mid to late 90’s covering Organ/Bassline house, which was quickly followed by Funky House, Electro & Deep House. I have played at many venues in and around Leeds, Bradford and Yarm over the years.When I was in my mid 20’s I started putting on nights with a difference, by hiring out large mansions and penthouses and putting on private parties. I did this for 2 years before I began my love for the radio. It all started with the famous Radio Frequency in Leeds which was broadcasting on FM. I played on this pirate radio station for circa 7 years. When I started off I was doing a graveyard shift on a Friday night playing 3-5am which gave me the Radio bug!! I found my feet very quickly and progressed on to do the drive time show on a Wed, Thurs & Friday afternoons 3pm – 6pm which made me hone my skills and fall in love with broadcasting. Following Radio Frequency and I moved onto Chartmix.fm which was an internet based station and continued my love for radio for around 12 months, until I moved to the Allstar team.After taking a break from radio, myself and a group that share the love and passion for radio decided to apply for the ofcon license. We were awarded the FM broadcasting license in May 2018 and so begins LDC Radio. A new chapter in the Leeds music, I for one cannot wait to see what the future brings.
