Next up for our second release is BEGBORROWSTEEL by Count Bass D. This was originally released by Count Bass D on CD in 2003 through his own imprint, CountBassD.com.  It was later released on February 21, 2004 as an EP on vinyl (JSV-001) with one bonus track and CD (OTCD-2038) with 4 bonus tracks, through Jazzy Sport/Octave. A worldwide release came later on RAMP Recordings (RAMP003) on Vinyl and CD which included instrumentals and 3 additional bonus tracks.

Count Bass D always intended BEGBORROWSTEEL to be released on cassette.  The original release in 2003 closes with the track, "Low Batteries."  The title is inspired by the moment a portable cassette player slows down because the batteries are running low.  We decided that it is only right to release BEGBORROWSTEEL the same way Count intended it to be released, so it ends with "Low Batteries."   

The tape comes with the original artwork from the 2003 CD release, a lyric booklet and a digital download card that includes all of the extra tracks from the later editions of BEGBORROWSTEEL. Finally there is one more bonus track for a total number of 8.

This is a limited run of 100 "steel" colored and hand numbered tapes.

Detroit MC Phat Kat drops an unreleased track produced by J Dilla and featuring La Peace, to announce the reissue of his 2007 "Carte Blanche" album.

Phat Kat says: "We decided to re-release the "Carte Blanche" album because it was put out right before the internet blew up, so it never really got to a lot of listeners. And it was a really good project that slipped through the cracks. It came together during the time me and Dilla were signed to Payday Records, but when the label folded we never got a chance to record a full album. We recorded "It Don’t Get No Liver Than This" for the 1st Down album but the label folded and it didn’t come out."

Originally released in 2007, Phat Kat’s 2nd studio album “Carte Blanche” is getting a re-release on July 27th via Below System Records. The deluxe edition will includes 2 new bonus tracks both produced by J Dilla.

“Carte Blanche” includes production by J Dilla, Black Milk, Young RJ, Nick Speed and features by Elzhi, Black Milk, Guilty Simpson, T3 and more. The 2 Dilla produced bonus tracks “World Premier” and “It Don’t Get No Liver Than This” with a featuring by La Peace, were recorded in 1996 and 1997.

DJ Design was an early member of the Stones Throw roster, releasing the compelling instrumental album Gather Round as well as the "Sparkdala" single with Quasimoto. He produced the first two Foreign Legion albums Kidnapper Van and Playtight and toured the world as the dj for the group. Design also remixed a track from the Beastie Boys album Hello Nasty called "Negotiation Limerick File." In 2003 DJ Design formed his own record label, Look Records, which has released full lengths from Foreign Legion, A.G. (DITC), Phat Kat (of J Dilla fame), G&D (Georgia Anne Muldrow and Dudley Perkins) and Grip Grand.
 
Jetlag has been a work in progress since 2004, with various artists flying back and forth to San Francisco to DJ Design's recording studio. The album features guest appearances by Stones Throw recording artists Guilty Simpson, Oh No & Roc C and former Stones Throw artist Dudley Perkins, football star Brandon Lloyd and Detroit's Phat Kat of J Dilla fame. Between tour dates and the daytime gig as president of Look Records, DJ Design produced and mixed down the album to what it is today. Jetlag is a snapshot of Designs past as well as a look into the future of this eclectic producer.
