Electric Spray Mix

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Edition #6 in this year by year series pays tribute to the Hip Hop of 1992, a year most notable for shifts in production techniques and styles and, perhaps more importantly, sampling trends. Abandoning over-saturated funk standards in favour of obscure jazz samples, producers such Showbiz, Diamond D, Q-Tip and many others besides laid the foundations for the laid back jazz led sound that characterised countless East Coast classics of the early to mid 90s. On the West Coast, Dr Dre’s seminal Chronic LP also broke new ground in terms of production style with a polished, classicly LA sonic template that formed the blueprint for the G Funk sound which ruled supreme throughout the early 90s. Artwork pays tribute to iconic logo of Nervous Records Hip Hop sub-label 'Wreck Records'.

#HIPHOP50: Classic Material Edition #6 (1992) mixed by Chris Read

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. This fifth bonus mix focuses on another sub-genre popularised in the 90s, the fusion of Hip Hop and Dancehall vocals. The mix features artists who hung their hat on that particular fusion (Mad Lion, Bobby Konders), Hip Hop styled remixes of Dancehall cuts (see DJ Muggs’ remix of Danny Red), Dancehall artists who vocalled Hip Hop beats (Mega Banton, Lady Apache) plus some pairings of Dancehall Acapellas with Hip Hop production from the era exclusive to this mix. The cover art references Nervous Records' 'Weeded' sub-label responsible for a number of key releases in this particular lane.

London’s very own Spin Doctor has been a busy boy while in Lockdown. He has created this epic mix dedicated to the powerhouse that is Q-Tip. Using 50 tracks to mark The Abstract’s 50th Birthday on Friday 10th April 2020.
 
The mix combinies a bunch of Tip’s productions, verses, samples, interviews and more. From A Tribe Called Quest to Solange, Nas to Quincey Jones, the mix explores all aspects of this man’s genius.
 
There are very few artists that can claim such impact on an entire genre, but A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip can do just that and more. As a member of what is widely agreed to be the greatest Hip-Hop group of all time, as a solo artist and as a producer for the great and the good, Q-Tip’s impact is immeasurable. Through his influence on the likes of J-Dilla, Kanye West and Pharrell, his influence can still be heard throughout all forms of Hip-Hop and Soul. Keep Bouncing!

Q-Tip Fifty 50

Inspired by the great classics of the 70’s & 80’s and, the 90’s rise of the Hip Hop culture DJ EF began buying records and spinning at students parties. His records collection was constantly growing and he kept on improving his technical skills which respectfully earned him his first live performance as a guest DJ at Berlin’s Am To Pm in 2000 and as a result his first residency.
In appreciation of his work, early fans liked to nickname him DJ Biggie. Mixing astounding sets, he strongly marked his freestyle fingerprints on the Berlin nightlife scene where he established numerous connections with world-class DJs and producers. From Underground and Old school Hip Hop and RnB to Funk, Soul and, Reggae always playing and scratching on the good old solid turntables while also staying up to date with the latest technologies in addition to mastering the art of live video turntablism.
