back story:
i’ve been going to shows at The Warfield since i was 20 years old to experience countless awe-inspiring music moments. performing as the opening act for an iconic band such as Royksopp was definitely a defining moment. in preparation, i went to work, digging deep into my musical archives that would allow me to create a mood that felt appropriate for what would follow, for a venue of concertgoers, not a club or underground party, yet remain distinctly me. i curated an assortment of music and mixed it together on the fly, in the moment, for what felt right. i ended up closing my musical journey with an edit of Sylvester, a San Francisco icon who has inspired me, at an iconic venue that has also lifted me on so many occasions. as this last song played, something propelled me to dance across the stage in celebration of him, this moment, and the profound effect true house music has over you. even when djing on a stage with a sold-out crowd looking on instead of being in a dj booth, usually on the floor with all the dancers. the response was electric, all the positive messages have been incredible.. so here’s that set, in its entirety. hope you enjoy it now as much as then. thank you to all the music family for the support!

Kicking things off for Troves Vol. 1, Justin teams up with west coast hero @LennyKiser for the molten “Rude”. Living up to its name, “Rude” sneaks into your mind inspiring havoc with its hypnotic bells & bellowing plumes of dangerous low end.

On “Dark Matter” SF lifeblood @dj-Galen steps up to the plate to join forces with Justin. Swung-out boppy drums get furnished with razor sharp bass plucks that morph into a searing acid line. This is moody chemistry at its deadliest.

Last but not least, Justin & Galen’s 2010 bomb “Tumbleweed” gets a monumental makeover for 2024. We get the same disorienting piano stabs & tripped out vocal mutations, but with a refined & punchier mix and an updated drum kit that will leave your brain tussling on the floor like a Russian thistle.……and this is only Volume 1!

Roam Recordings has enlisted Galen and Shiny Objects, two heavyweights of San Francisco’s dance music scene, for a collaborative release that lives up to their storied reputations – the bright and techy “Purest Sound“, backed with the equally formidable “Sunday Freeze“.

Galen started out by setting up speakers and a generator at a park in Berkeley every Sunday, and soon hundreds of people were dancing while watching the sun set behind the San Francisco skyline. Now he’s behind the Sunset Sound System with its world-renowned outdoor events, boat parties, and annual Sunset Campout Festival. Shiny Objects is Christopher Smith, the founder of Om Records and the producer of of over one hundred tracks and remixes under various aliases. Smith is also a core member of the Burning Man camp Disco Knights and a proprietor of Monarch, one of the Bay Area’s most respected nightspots.

The release certainly exudes a current San Francisco style: tech’ed out but still playful, and fitting firmly within Roam’s party vibes aesthetic. “Purest Sound” gives the dance floor all it’s got, with a beefy bass line, chiming percussion, and ominous spoken vocals over a compulsive rhythm. This one builds nicely into late night bliss mode. “Sunday Freeze” qualifies for ‘double A-side’, as it’s a production that’s just as potent and compelling. With a little more dub in its bones, the track moves in constant motion as echoey synths, thumping kicks, and a rumbling low end steer the course. The extended breakdown at the half-way mark succeeds in delivering after-hours power.

my remix of 2 Block Radius - For Nicole.  dedicated to a friend gone too soon...

This Roam Recordings release is a tribute to Nicole Mason who passed in a tragic accident. Nicole was a major part of the featured artist collaboration 2 Block Radius along with Tom Cloutman and Tee Cardaci founded in 1999.

During the late 90s early 00s San Francisco was a hotbed for dance music. Musicians from around the word moved to the city and serendipitously ended up living within 2 Blocks from each other in the Lower Haight neighborhood. A community of artists and musicians sprouted up. Roam Recordings started there and label boss JP Soul ran a popular after hours spot next to the legendary DJ bar The Top. Tweakin’ Records was on the block and Nicole lived above the store where he kept a recording studio and was always around for deep conversation and a good laugh.

in san francisco during the mid to late 90s through the early 2000s the house and drum & bass scenes cross-pollinated quite naturally. at this time I was fascinated by these intricate breakbeat rhythms. i proceeded to obsessively collect drum & bass records with a style that mostly featured dreamy yet tough dancefloor grooves.

Galen honed the craft of djing by playing vinyl at renegade and warehouse parties and at his own legendary Sunset Sound System park and boat parties where he was able to explore many sides of dance music from deep acid house and techno to disco and reggae. He is known for his technical mastery of creating complex grooves on the fly through his assertive mixing techniques that are inspired by each unique dance floor. His discerning taste for music helps him carve out unique rhythm and bass sounds that are distinctly his own. His refined attention to detailed musical nuances enables him to create long blends just as easily and smoothly as quick transitions, each suited to the time and atmosphere on hand. This precise listening has also translated into his studio productions, with recent songs out now on What To Do & Culprit Records. You can find him touring Europe in the summer as well as various parties around the US, Canada, and Mexico when he is not holding it down in San Francisco.
