Welcome to the latest edition of The Exclusive Series and we are thrilled to bring you a mix from the one and only Steve Parry.  

2 hours and 20 minutes of cosmic brilliance, to mark a special moment in the story of Selador, Steve's highly regarded label that he co-runs with the legend Dave Seaman....

As UK based Independent Electronic Dance label Selador Recordings approach their 9th anniversary, neatly coinciding with their 150th release, label bosses Dave Seaman & Steve Parry celebrate by unveiling an exciting new collaborative project under the alias, Nunchi Coup.

“We wanted to try to capture our 30+ year journey through Acid House Culture with some new work that reflected our history but still had it’s finger firmly on the pulse of the here and now” explains Dave “Steve and I are both Acid House Lifers but continue to be just as excited by new music as we were back in those early halcyon days. Running the label together has only served to reinforce that.”

“The vibe is a little more raw than what we’d usually do” Steve continues, “We were aiming for Nunchi Coup to have a more classic House and Techno sound. A nod to our heritage but still in a contemporary setting. After three decades in the business we’re even more aware of the circular nature of things.”

The two tracks on offer, whilst quite different in style, definitely have a unifying bond in that they both sound like they could have been made any time in the last 30 years. The astutely named, sample-laced ’Slaves To The Algo-Rhythm’ draws on the classic combination of emotional, soaring, orchestral strings set atop slamming House beats. Goosebumps-a-go-go! Whilst it’s bed partner, the visceral jackhammer that is ‘Coping Mechanism’ packs a punch like Tyson Fury with it’s Rave stabs and strong Warehouse party DNA. In Yer Face!

And the name, Nunchi Coup? What’s that all about then?

Nunchi is the Korean word for the ability to gauge how people are thinking and feeling in order to create connection, trust and harmony. Like a sixth sense, a kind of emotional intelligence and awareness of your surroundings.

“The concept spoke to us as DJs, that subtle art of reading the room and acting appropriately has been the mainstay of our musical philosophy since forever. The Koreans believe Nunchi is the secret to happiness and we can’t argue with that”.

Nick Warren became one of the first so-called “superstar DJs” in the mid-to-late ’90s, holding down a high-profile residency at Cream in England, touring around the world, and appearing on several DJ mix albums before they became commonplace. Though he spun an eclectic array of dance styles in the late ’80s and early ’90s, he eventually championed the late-’90s trance sound of labels like Hooj Choons and joined the ranks of other superstar DJs like Paul Oakenfold, Sasha, and Tall Paul.

Before leading a jet-set lifestyle, Warren moved to Bristol in the 1980s after having just turned 20. By the early ’90s, he was one of the city’s top DJs, spinning upstairs at Vision, one of the city’s first super-clubs. At the time, Warren spun everything from dub and hip-hop to house, which became his preferred style.

When fellow Bristol artists Massive Attack left to tour America in the wake of their early success, they invited Warren to accompany them on tour as their official DJ, a testament to his turntable skills as well as his reputation at the time. Eventually, Warren began a massively successful stint as the resident DJ at Cream in Liverpool.

The years that followed saw Nick Warren enjoy a whirlwind of success. Through a combination of providing acclaimed mixes for Mixmag, DMC, and the hugely successful Global Underground series, and releasing a string of club-smashing solo singles, Warren found himself catapulted into the electronic and house big leagues; and, by continuing to release acclaimed albums, singles, and remixes with his Way Out West partner-in-crime, Jody Wisternoff, and remixing tracks for the likes of Lana Del Rey, he firmly established himself as a truly multi-faceted producer of top-quality dance music.

Having already graced the decks at every self-respecting super-club on the planet and made his name as a superstar DJ, the late Noughties saw Warren turn his hand to the business side of the music industry. Now, as the A&R of Bristol-based Hope Recordings, he spends his time seeking to hone and promote the next generation of club-smashing DJ and production talent; and, through the expansion of his label The Soundgarden into a globe-straddling international events and entertainment brand, set in stone his already firmly-established reputation as a giant of electronic, techno, and house music.

With a flurry of new releases, further The Soundgarden live events from Ibiza to Argentina, and the highly anticipated Way Out West ‘Tuesday Maybe’ tour already in the diary for 2018, Nick Warren is showing no signs of slowing down; and, if the continued devotion of his ever-expanding fan-base is anything to go by, that’s a decision that will be welcomed with open arms by dance music lovers the world over.

3 QUESTIONS to GUY J:

Q: Thanks for being part of our series. Talking about your mix: What do these tracks mean to you and how did you get in touch with electronic music once?

A: Thank you for having me! It made me feel great doing this mix, it took me back in time and made me realize how lucky I am to grow up with this music around me. Everything was beautiful, everything was made with passion. While it was hard to post 10-15 years of influence in 1 hour, I just went with what I felt like at the moment of making the mix. I was growing up with the radio turned on all the time at home, and was exposed to different kind of music and I think Electronic Music for me was what I wanted to do, but the feeling of what music can transit is what I learned from listening to all genres of music. I feel blessed to grow with music that will be timeless.

Q: During Corona the world has changed a lot, especially for everyone of us being in the music and event industry. How did you spend your time?

A: I went through a process during this time and still going through that process. It started with kind of ‘hype’, not necessary positive, but excitement of a change. And I thought to my self 'OK, it's a great opportunity to work on music and spend time at home’ but then the touring was missing and with that also the inspiration was missing, so frustration came along as I’m used to working a lot on music. After that, realization came and I understand that this is what it is and there is nothing to do about it and appreciate that my surrounding are healthy and make the best out of being at home. It might take time to get back to how it used to be for the music and event industry, but it will get there, and we will miss being at home and this slow rhythm.

Q: Which fresh and hot projects are you currently working, so what's coming next?

A: I have my on release coming out on Lost & Found called “Beast Of Sea / Catfish” which will be on digital and vinyl. And the vinyl is going to include another track limited to the vinyl release. Here is link for the release: https://www.beatport.com/release/beast-of-sea/3006793

Live DJ Set For Dreaming Awake/Desert Hearts Black

Currently based in Ibiza, Gustin is resident for ‘The Soundgarden’ events series and founder of the recently established 'Intu Music' record label.

He began dj’ing in his hometown of Dublin, Ireland, playing inner city house parties and illegal after hours clubs in the mid 90’s. Then upon re-locating to Amsterdam just after the millennium he caught the ear of Jayhwalk, resulting in a residency allowing him to fully develop his sound alongside industry stalwarts such as Matthew Dekay and Hippee & Halo and he also curated his own weekly event named ‘House of Progress’ (HoP) where he played regular seven to eight hour solo sets.

In 2015 Gustin moved to Ibiza where he currently lives year round, but he can regularly be found playing across Europe, the USA and South America.

Gustin’s infectious sound can make a dancefloor move from the bottom up with a unique blend of lush, pumping, techprog house music.
