On a Saturday morning at the start of November 2013, First Word Records took 3 of our favourite producers out of London to spend the day browsing through the vinyl shelves of the biggest record nerd we know - the incomparable Mr Thing. This was the culmination of an idea that first manifested itself on Record Store Day 2012. Like most ideas it was a natural conclusion to a conversation about records and music - kidkanevil had expressed a desire to dig through Mr Thing's sizeable collection for some inspiration. Chatting to Mr Thing it seemed unfair to limit this to only one producer - Tall Black Guy and Eric Lau were top of our wish list. So - a double 7" (Mr Thing would make a beat too - they are his records after all) in time for Record Store Day 2013 (yes, we're a year late). There was however one stipulation about the records from the usually mild-mannered Mr Thing:
'The guys can sample anything they like, but Nothing Leaves The House....'
And who were we to argue.....
The result is four tracks that celebrate our love for record digging, sample chopping and the simple love of a dope beat.

21-year-old New Zealand musician Arjuna Oakes's debut EP, The Watcher, is a showcase of his ability as a singer-songwriter, instrumentalist and producer, and a testament to his depth of engagement with music. The first two tracks on the EP fit neatly within the jazz-infused soul music landscape he is quickly becoming part of, but the latter half of the EP is far harder to categorise. Featuring instrumentation from some of New Zealand’s most exciting young jazz musicians, The Watcher explores a wide variety of themes and musical ideas, with Arjuna’s charismatic soul vocals and robust sonic palette serving as a connective thread. From big social issues to personal relationships and internal self-discoveries,  across The Watcher, Arjuna takes his cue from the title track and exploration of mass surveillance, and it’s relevance within our everyday lives. This watcher theme continues throughout the rest of the EP, with the stories told rendered as if being observed by an outside force. Decorated by cinematic soundscapes, hypnotic grooves, creative improvisation and catchy melodies, Arjuna's debut is a test palette for his future projects, one that makes his enthusiasm to develop and explore themes and style in song abundantly clear.

The southern roots and homegrown musical abilities are the main ingredients that shaped DJ Hush into the mastermind of the turntables & MPC. Influenced by the greats in Hip-Hop, DJ Premier, DJ Babu, DJ Qbert, Jay Dilla, Pete Rock, Mix Master Mike of the Beastie Boys, to say the least, the Mississippi native was first introduced into Hip-Hop in 1998 in his freshman year in college.  Born Kevin Smith, DJ Hush was surrounded by music as a young kid. “My father was a classical musician and singer who surrounded me with music before I could even talk.” It’s rare to know your dream as a child, nothing stood in DJ Hush’s way. The laid back persona of DJ Hush is only a mask of what he can really do on stage. “I'm a quiet and laid back dude off stage but when I get in front of turntables and onstage, I talk with my hands,” confesses the DJ. Living 10 minutes away from the soulfulness of Memphis, TN, DJ Hush is overwhelmed with different sounds and the opportunity to still purchase vinyl in record stores. Being able to hear something on the radio or flip through vinyl, or just digging and finding a song helps DJ Hush find his next hit. The crunchy, original, soulful sounds of DJ Hush has reached Hip-Hop royalty from KRS-ONE, Raekwon, Inspectah Deck and Masta Killah of Wu- Tang, El Da Sensei of Artifacts, O.C. of D.I.T.C.
