In east Africa, Tabwa mythology portrays the spotted hyena as a solar animal that first brought the sun to warm the cold Earth, while west African folklore generally shows the hyena as a symbol of immortality.
In Tanzania, there is a belief that witches ride on the backs of spotted hyenas.
A mythical African tribe called the Bouda is reputed to have members that are able to transform into hyenas. These "werehyenas" were executed when discovered, but did not revert back to their human form when killed.
