There is nothing like a dope beat... the drums.. samples... head nod. The simple but addictive formula. Since the beginning, it has always been sample-based beats that have caught my attention and have drawn me in. My fascination with original samples of hip-hop's golden age lead to my own personal discovery of the incredible music that the legendary producers of that time had sampled.

My experimentation with sampling and producing actually started before I considered myself a DJ. I even played a few of my primitive instrumentals on WRIU 90.3 FM back in the day. Making beats took a back seat for a while, but once I started heavily digging for break records, building my own sample collection, I was again inspired to focus and continue to develop my production skills and style.

Betwn The Brks

At the time, we were deep in exploring original samples of many classic hip hop songs. We noticed an interesting connection for one particular artist that had a very unique sound. A wide range of producers had sampled 1970s Ahmad Jamal jazz records and coincidentally teamed up with some the dopest artists of the time to create some classic hip hop joints. Tracks sampling Ahmad Jamal's music seemingly created a deep playlist, all spawning from a few sound clips from a handful of Jamal's records. We used 4 turntables to create this mix to thread together some awesome music that was recreated as some equally awesome music and of course to pay appreciation to the brilliant jazz pianist himself.

Curtis Sampson aka DJ Curty Cut will always be the single biggest influence on me as a DJ.  Already established and highly respected by the time I had bought my first record, he was the first person I ever saw DJ, scratch, and make beats in person.  He passed away on May 25, 2002 at the entirely-too-young age of 32, and when my radio show came around 6 days later, Jaysonic and I paid respects to our favorite Rhode Island hip-hop personality and talent as best we could.  Sage Francis also stopped by to reminisce and play an exclusive song he had done in 1996 that was produced by Curty.  There were definitely a lot of people who knew him better than I did, but I will always look at him as the superhero of Rhode Island hip-hop.  Mixshow features new (at the time) joints by The Demigodz, H.U.G., Nature, Rise, All Natural, Big Tone, Mr. Lif, Nas, Insight; local treats by Swann Notty and Prospect Heights, and much more.  Tools used: 2 turntables, mixer, minidisc player, and lots of records.
