Our next Mix Series guest is a man who requires very little introduction. One of Detroit’s most iconic figures, Kenny Larkin has been at the very forefront of the electronic music scene for more than three decades. 

Best known for his soulful approach to techno, Larkin’s timeless productions have been released via such mammoth labels as Warp Records, Peacefrog, Planet E, Rush Hour, KMS and Transmat, not forgetting his own label Art Of Dance, of course. 

Following a recent string of classic Larkin reissues and represses, such as the Azimuth and Metaphor LPs, we reached out to Kenny to see if he would be interested in putting together a mix for our series. The result is a particularly unique one - it's a 1 hour and 15-minute recording taken from a live DJ set he did in LA on Saturday 4th September 2021.

It is fair to say that for every Derrick May and Jeff Mills, the Motor City has produced a whole bunch of talented artists that never quite got the same acclaim. Kelli Hand aka K-HAND is surely one of those. The rather under the radar artist is one of Detroit’s most consistent performers, and has been for the last twenty years. Her music revolves around slick and robust drums and has come on essential labels like Underground Resistance, Warp and Tresor as well as more recently Nina Kraviz’s Trip. 

Deep seated as her roots are, K-HAND'S music is not all throwback stuff: this mix she has put together for us mixes up the old and the new, the choppy and the smooth. Underpinned by a darkly seductive energy, it bristles and brims with vocal laced breakbeats and swinging garage, glides through some smooth deep techno and gets loose with some wild style jams that will get you out of your seat.

“healing” begins to open up from the haze that “fog” leaves. The title has a lot of meaning behind this one, laced with distant vocals telling you to “let the healing into your heart”. The track encapsulates the title of the EP, an emotional shift towards happiness, peace of mind, hope, and (some) clarity. This track was written with a lot of personal hardships on CD’s mind from a recent relationship, and always pictured being entranced by it at the end of a long set in the club.

We Are Imperfect Beings

DJ Levv born David Courchaine, Canadian but raised in The Netherlands. Grew up in a family that has been in the theater and club scene since he can remember. At an early age Levv became interested in music and performing, Starting at an early age playing in theater plays he soon decided that performing music to crowds was more his thing. In late 80ies he started spinning records starting with hardcore witch was upcoming at the time. Later in the 90ies he changed to the more popular club and mellow sounds. After a brief period of 5 years around 2005 he changed to the sounds of Detroit house and later Detroit techno.

Now at the present time Levv added to this collection of music, Techno, Tech House, Deep Tech and Hard Techno. Pounding bass lines and colorful sounds define Levv.

Aside from performing Levv spend tons of time in the studio creating new sound. One of the latest projects is marrying cultural specific music with the pounding beats of techno this is what inspired him to create Levvism.
