The GRIMELIGHT mixtape is a collaborative effort of Lowup Records’ DJ Mellow and graphic designer Tim Colmant. While working together on Lowup’s latest cover and poster designs they discovered a shared fascination for the new wave of grime producers that are currently remodeling this historically dark and somewhat aggressive offshoot of UK garage. 

Up and coming guys like Morcee, Erra, Dark0, Strict Face, JT The Goon, Mr Mitch, Major Grave, Grobbie and Murlo tend to drop the tempo a notch and propose a lighter, looser template for the genre, one with more space, more harmony and more melody. This more sensual approach has brought about a new dynamic wherein tunes can easily cross over to the level playing field of current, global bass music, reinstating grime as a relevant sound for the clubs. Toujours à l’affût d’un croisement entre cultures urbaines et beats afro-caribéens, DJ Mellow hante la scène Global Beats depuis près d’une décennie. Dès 2008, c’est à la tête du collectif bruxellois Lowup qu’il régale les aficionados et convertit les incrédules au son de l’Internationale du Ghetto, dont il est un incontestable ambassadeur. Il devient ainsi l’importateur officiel des Kuduro, Soca Beat, Cumbia digitale, Dancehall et autre Kwaito, tout en gardant un œil sur la production londonienne, jamais avare en hybridations cosmopolites.

En 2011, le collectif Lowup s’est mué en label qui sert de vaisseau amiral pour les prodiges de l’electro-funk du Ghetto mondial. Chaque mardi à 22h, le Lowup Radio Show est d’ailleurs devenu un rendez-vous incontournable de la planète Funk. Entouré du jeune créateur londonien Murlo, du MC ghanéen Steelo ou encore des producteurs belgo-marocains Jabo et Gangah, DJ Mellow apporte sa contribution à la cause avec de nombreux remixes et deux EP, Belgica Esta Picao! (2011) et A Slice of Bass (2014), qui installent sa polyphonie rythmique et ses sonorités à 37° au cœur de la vague Global Beats.
