Los Angeles DJ / producer Mojo Rising has returned to the Cold Busted label with a diverse and funky new album titled On The Horizon. A key player in California’s dance scene since 1992, DJ Mojo (as he goes by when behind the decks) is known for eclectic sets that span downtempo, drum n’ bass, breakbeat and house. He has the distinction of having held residency at three of Los Angeles’ most beloved underground gatherings - What? Afterhours, F.A.M.I.L.Y, and Insomniac (which now organizes the epic EDC festival) - and DJ’ed at the memorable Organic ’96 festival alongside the Orb, Underworld, and the Chemical Brothers. With On The Horizon, Mojo Rising leaves little left to desire offering a full album of savory slow burners that should satisfy funk freaks and beat heads the world over. Awash with pleasant idiosyncrasies and plenty of
bouncy, soulful breaks, tracks like “Boom Boom Martini,” “Bumpy Ride,” and “Caravan” easily stand out as favorites. Mojo has also collaborated with Cold Busted label mate mister T. - still riding a wave of praise for his LP Play It Loud - on the latinflavored “Just For Listening.” Whether recouping from a decadent night on the town or just getting ready to hit the club, this spotless manifesto of modern downtempo tunes will add a splash of class to any occasion … there’s no going wrong here.

The Lazy 88s - Fat Fingered Funk

I've been a fan of Moby since the early underground days. Spinning tracks like Go and Voodoo Child on massive sound systems in dark warehouses is an incomparable feeling. As Moby's sound has evolved, I've evolved; songs like Porcelain still touch me.  This was my spin on a Moby track per another Beatport Remix Contest. I have yet to win one of these things, but in the big picture, it doesn't really matter. Besides, it allows me to release free remixes to those who keep up on my work. Cheers!

Moving Forward, the latest album from Los Angeles DJ / producer Mojo Rising, also pleasantly looks to the recent past just a bit … harking back to the heyday of downtempo music as heard on fabled imprints like Mo'Wax, Pork, and Cup Of Tea. The Cold Busted label, today's premier ambassador of smoked-out funky grooves, has given Mojo Rising the platform to release this outstanding set of fourteen tracks, each presenting a vibe at times spacey, sometimes hazy, and always downright funky. Moving Forward is an album of highlights, such as the lush and emotive breakbeat-fueled title track, the heavy boom-bap swing of "Jazzy Vapors", and the digital future funk of "MindFAQ". Special guests provide cool collaboration, including Little Planet, World View, Alex Hudish, and fellow Cold Busted artist Jenova 7. Throughout the sound is distinctive and fleshed-out, expertly mixing these dusty beats with modern production techniques. It becomes clear that if, at first, the cuts seem a throwback to downtempo's prime, Mojo Rising indeed updates the genre, Moving Forward towards a funky rhythm resurgence.

‘Seven Wonders’ from Mojo Rising is a 7-track album that exudes a worldly and textured palette of Funk, Dub, Instrumental and Electronic music. ‘Stonehenge’ starts it off at about 100BPM with a satisfying crackling snare, funky instrumental breaks for uprocking and clever sampling. ‘The Lighthouse’ is a bright and spicy tune with softly plucked upright bass with Jazz and Latin tones, wonderful live drums and a beak down into slower beats, and balmy ethereal synths and sub bass. ‘Hanging Gardens’ is a gem that drops in with silky smooth powerful bass and playful IDM beats, relaxing vocals and blissful sounds. ‘Pyramids’, a striking tune, builds with fresh upbeat bit crushed drums, exquisite and ghostly beautiful shades of melodies and reverberating samples for a satiating listen. Ending is the pensive and equanimity of ‘The Tomb’ an electronic ambient Dub journey with gentle piano and relaxed snare, the leisurely bass carrying the tune in pleasant waves. A liberating, appealing album ‘Seven Wonders’ gives the listener an exotic and diversely satisfying experience.

A versatile technician and storyteller behind the decks, Mojo is well-versed in the mystic art of Mojitsu. Mojo has been involved in electronic underground music for over three decades. At the height of L.A.'s golden rave era back in 1992, Mojo got his start at the storied techno weekly, What? Afterhours. He went on to become a resident for F.A.M.I.L.Y and Insomniac and was a regular fixture across Southern California at numerous massives and events, including the first three Nocturnal Wonderlands and Organic '96. He was recently invited back to Nocturnal Wonderland 2015 as part of the 20th Anniversary festivities, performing in the Upside Down Room.

With a diverse and eclectic palate, Mojo prides himself on delivering quality sets across a broad range of styles, spinning everything from techno and house to drum & bass and trip hop. But a love for breakbeats and all things funky, jazzy and bassey truly resonates with him. An avid collector of vinyl, Mojo has a passion not just for mixing and production, but also for sharing the history of our underground music and culture.

Mojo's production efforts have turned out a steady stream of releases under the moniker Mojo Rising, most notably funky trip hop and downtempo soundscapes for L.A. label Cold Busted. Many tracks have charted at online music retailers such as Beatport, Juno and Traxsource. While his primary focus is currently directed in the production arena, behind the decks, Mojo is still a force to be reckoned with.
