Leonidas
 was an ancient Spartan king
 known for leading a small Greek force, 
including 300 Spartans, 
in a heroic stand 
against the massive Persian army
 at the Battle of Thermopylae
 in 480 BC. 
Although the Greeks were ultimately defeated,

The Battle of Thermopylae was a 480 BCE clash where a small Greek force, led by King Leonidas and including 300 Spartans, fought to delay the massive invading Persian army under King Xerxes at the narrow pass of Thermopylae. After holding out for two days, a local named Ephialtes revealed a secret path, allowing the Persians to flank the Greek position. Leonidas dismissed most of his Greek allies, remaining with the Spartans, Thespians, and some others for a final, heroic last stand against overwhelming odds. The Greek contingent was ultimately annihilated, but their courageous defense bought crucial time for the rest of Greece and became a legendary example of heroic sacrifice.
