Fiona MacLeith: Portrait of an Unsung Artist

Fiona MacLeith, a Scottish singer-songwriter, embodies a new generation of artists who prioritize the authenticity of their work over public recognition. At 27, this enigmatic artist now divides her time between the misty landscapes of the Scottish Highlands and the creative energy of the Belleville neighborhood in Paris.

Musical Journey

Fiona MacLeith's journey is marked by early musical training. Introduced to traditional Scottish singing as a child in Edinburgh pubs where her grandfather played the bagpipes, she developed a unique voice early on, tinged with Celtic melancholy and a rare emotional intensity. As a teenager, she discovered the worlds of PJ Harvey, Portishead, and Massive Attack, influences that would shape her vocal approach and poetic songwriting.

After studying English literature at the University of Glasgow, Fiona joined several local indie-folk bands between 2017 and 2020, performing in intimate clubs in Edinburgh and Glasgow. It was during this time that she honed her writing style, characterized by introspective lyrics exploring themes of isolation, fragmented identity, and disillusionment with modernity. However, weary of the constraints of the commercial music scene and the media exposure it entails, she decided to step away from the spotlight to focus exclusively on the essence of her art.

A Radical Artistic Philosophy

Fiona MacLeith has made the deliberate choice to release no photographs of herself and to refuse all forms of self-promotion. For her, the artist must efface themselves before the work. This approach, reminiscent of that of certain contemporary artists who favor anonymity, stems from a deep conviction: music should speak for itself, without being obscured by image, marketing, or the cult of personality. None of her tracks can be found on distribution networks, nor is there any trace of her on music streaming sites like Deezer or Spotify.

"I want my words and voice to exist without a face," she confides in a rare written statement. "The music should be a space where listeners project their own emotions, not mine." A Voice to Discover

Her voice is described as unique and moving: a deep, velvety timbre, sometimes broken, that navigates between fragility and power. It possesses that rare quality of a voice that seems to carry within it several lives, several stories. Against Philippe Lebraud's hypnotic synth pads, her vocal range finds an ideal setting, creating a dramatic tension between the organic and the electronic, between the intimate and the universal.
