Another New Day (Little Big Beat Studio Live Session)

I messaged Laura about going to the show- she answered with “Don’t tell Marko, it’ll be a surprise!”.  A day later a message from Dawn (their manager):  “I had an idea to ask you to spin…”.   Me: “Yes, I can totally do that”. The rest is…well it’s a bucket list fulfillment, that’s what it is!

This is from the 2nd day: I started with Weather Storm (Massive Attack- before this show, theirs was THE biggest opening slot I had when they played Houston in the early 2000s, AND the weather looked ominous, but luckily no rain), took a few detours into reggae, hip hop, mixed in Heatwave and managed to “slip in” MARKSONTHEKEYS (a track I did in the early 2000s that has Mark on The Keys,  I believe the keyboard also had some marks, but I digress).  

Picked up the tempo from there and was able to end with a current anthem Oscar P’s “Split Personality”.   Excuse me if I stumbled a tiny bit here and there- it’s part of the craft.  Thanks for listening!

Red Rocks 2024- opening set for Khruangbin 08.29.24

Presenting the second single taken from Melbourne/Naarm multi-instrumentalist Don Glori’s forthcoming third album ‘Paper Can’t Wrap Fire’. ‘Power’ is a spiritual, choir-led, Brazilian-infused beauty. 

It was a song that Don wrote after being fed up with dealing with bad promoters and agents. It’s a simple mantra - protect your power and energy and do what feels free and good. A playful composition, musically it's divided into two parts. The first was inspired by Kendrick Lamar's 'To Pimp a Butterfly' and the West Coast sonic world, delicately balancing the spiritual choir, ghostly horns, and jazz break intro. The song then morphs as it progresses, with the gravity that the choir once provided, ripped away by the next section.

From sombre to cheeky, the group chant turns to a satirical hook from the opposite view of the cynical promoter.
 
‘Take your fee, take your seat, come on man keep it up,
Take your fee, take your seat, come on man just shut up’

The song then breaks into a segment that nods to the Brazilian legends Azymuth and their 1977 track 'Tamborim, Cuíca, Ganzá, Berimbau’. Alcides Neto, Robyn Cummins and Al Kennedy provide the shimmering pandeiro, conga and drum percussion rhythms, as Joel Trigg lets rip with a swelling Rhodes solo that crescendos to the finale.

BCR Radio Episode 043 - El Michels Affair - Sound Business

Hard to believe I started this series 12 years ago. Time moves so fast, doesn’t it?

At first, it was a project meant to celebrate the indescribable feeling of making it through another lonnnng Montreal winter. Then, it became a form of catharsis for me to grieve the memory of my mom, who passed away a few years ago now. I’ve thought a few times that this project might have run its course, but as I got a lot of very kind feedback from listeners, I think it has come to mean something for them too. Hopefully, it does to you too.

So here we are with another selection of songs to heal, uplift, cry, love and laugh.
