Arms Deal, Central Africa

 Apa wa lila omona ka yuk u momenapo. 
(The full consequences of a deed are not reaped all at once)

The first sign of its approach is a thin drone that climbs 
Above the hum of insects in the tall grass.  After awhile 
It appears.  A stubby “T” hanging against the clouds 
Followed by a wispy black tail of burnt kerosene.  It 
Resolves itself into a bulky white aircraft that some call 
The “Whale.”  Even from a distance it looks dirty.  Worse 
As it comes in low with roaring engines to chase the 
Cattle off the cracked runway.  A turn and a last look 
For rocks or logs.  Satisfied, the monster lands and rolls up 
To the group of soldiers waiting by the roofless hangar. 
In front stands an officer who is ice behind his mirrored 
Sunglasses.  The plane rolls to a stop and the engines wind 
Down.  
                                                * 
A ramp drops and the pilot and loadmaster walk out of the 
Gloomy hold and into the sunlight.  With a nod from 
The officer, soldiers tramp into the plane and begin off-loading 
Long green boxes onto the tarmac.  The officer, the pilot, and 
the loadmaster scan the manifest and count boxes with dancing 
Pens.  While the plane’s crew rest in the emptying hold, 
Sunglasses points to a box and soldiers use a crowbar to 
Rip off the lid with a shriek.  Guns lie in perfect rows. 
The finger points again and another box reveals bullets.  
Another, grenades.

Sunglasses nods.  A dirty suit staggers out into the furnace heat.  
From behind his medals, Sunglasses pulls out a small sack.  
Dirty Suit grabs it greedily and wedges a jeweler’s loupe into 
His eye. A small stone emerges from the bag.  He holds it up.  
Down.  Close.  Another stone comes out.  Then a third.  
The pilot sweats.  Sunglasses remains ice.  Dirty Suit finally 
Looks up and smiles.  The pilot sighs and holds out his hand.  
Sunglasses salutes and walks off.  The pilot spits on the sizzling 
Tarmac and signals the crew.  The cargo ramp closes as the trucks 
Roar off.  The aircraft’s engines spool up.  Power builds as throttles 
Open.  In minutes, the plane climbs into the innocent clouds.  The 
Cows wander back across the tarmac to the beckoning shade trees, 
Grasshoppers sing, and another revolution begins.

Rainy Season  - 19:08:2016

Fast forwards last night in Istanbul where by some fated chance, at dinner, I meet a teacher who takes Kizomba seriously. I explain some of my issues… “Ok I will give you a hour or 2 of private lesson and you will be ready for the social tonight”! “All Africans can dance” the teacher says… I am excited and ready… I love this optimism… well that was until said teacher asks me to dance to a song that was playing and takes one look at me trying to dance and says, “You will need many classes… First I need to teach you how to walk then how to listen to music before you can dance”… Light at the end of a really really long tunnel but a light none the less… And thus my Kizomba foundation building began… That was 5 months ago…
So what is in a name I ask? I am still learning about Kizomba and its roots… it’s significance to the culture it originates from so I cannot comment much about Kizomba vs Urban-Kiz but what I can say, and this is just my personal opinion as a newbie is that Names are important! Proper names are important! One slip up and you could end up eating a poisonous plant all because of mixing up the names… Kizomba seems to me to identify this dance and this dance identifies the name so I see it as, to paraphrase a quote “If you grow up being fed shit and it is referred to as steak… then to you shit is steak, however the first time you are fed steak, no matter how much you love it you will ask, ‘what is this shit’ because to you shit is steak so you refer to steak as shit” and that is what is in a name… Everything should have and be called by its proper name! #ForIAmAWorkInProgress

Only once in your life, I truly believe, you find someone who can completely turn your world around. You tell them things that you’ve never shared with another soul and they absorb everything you say and actually want to hear more.
You share hopes for the future, dreams that will never come true, goals that were never achieved and the many disappointments life has thrown at you.
When something wonderful happens, you can’t wait to tell them about it, knowing they will share in your excitement.
They are not embarrassed to cry with you when you are hurting or laugh with you when you make a fool of yourself.
Never do they hurt your feelings or make you feel like you are not good enough, but rather they build you up and show you the things about yourself that make you special and even beautiful.
There is never any pressure, jealousy or competition but only a quiet calmness when they are around.
You can be yourself and not worry about what they will think of you because they love you for who you are. The things that seem insignificant to most people such as a note, song or walk become invaluable treasures kept safe in your heart to cherish forever.
Memories of your childhood come back and are so clear and vivid it’s like being young again. Colors seem brighter and more brilliant. Laughter seems part of daily life where before it was infrequent or didn’t exist at all.
A phone call or two during the day helps to get you through a long day’s work and always brings a smile to your face. In their presence, there’s no need for continuous conversation, but you find you’re quite content in just having them nearby.
Things that never interested you before become fascinating because you know they are important to this person who is so special to you.
You think of this person on every occasion and in everything you do. Simple things bring them to mind like a pale blue sky, gentle wind or even a storm cloud on the horizon.
You open your heart knowing that there’s a chance it may be broken one day and in opening your heart, you experience a love and joy that you never dreamed possible.
You find that being vulnerable is the only way to allow your heart to feel true pleasure that’s so real it scares you. You find strength in knowing you have a true friend and possibly a soul mate who will remain loyal to the end.
Life seems completely different, exciting and worthwhile. Your only hope and security is in knowing that they are a part of your life.”

battled a deadly virus and came out with bruises and sores? 
Tell me, oh muse! 
How could she be without hate when she was brutally hurt?

So many generations wanted to be there, 
When Africa the sleeping giant, like a phoenix, rises and flies in the air, 
and life is nice and fair.
When Africans have enough to share, 
while their children play here and there.

So many others before us wished they had graced,

Amigo Pappy...Zouk by Dj Tó Costa

DJ To’ Costa was born in Luanda, Angola and developed his taste for music and dance at an early age. His first influence of music came from his grandmother, who used to play the “Batuke” in one of the biggest carnival groups in Angola. His second influence came from listening to his mother’s records and her favourite singer Roberta Miranda from Brazil as well as listening to UB40 and Bob Marley and the Wailers. 

His interest in becoming a DJ arose when he used to frequent the local matinee and he fell in love with mixing beats. However, this interest was not to surface properly until he left for Lisbon and visited the best Afro club there, Kandando and heard the unique DJ Joao Reis. From that moment on he knew he would be a DJ. He collected a vast number of vinyl, CD’s and tapes, increasing his knowledge of Afro as well as European beats. 

His first opportunity at DJing came in London at a club named Sabura, which was run by the famous DJ Gerson Marino. From then on things snowballed. During his 16 years career as a DJ he played in various clubs in London varying from the best Afro-Luso clubs in the UK to mainstream clubs in central London.

Throughout his career he also participated in some music production, collaborated with DJ Joka Moreno as well as co-wrote some music. 

His aim is to take Kizomba to the mainstream dance scene worldwide.
