Back in the early days of hip-hop, djing was one of the key elements of the culture. In order to be known as a dj, you had to have mad skills, not just cutting and scratching but you also had to have your own style and to be able to read the crowd and get people dancing. 

Since those early days of the Hip-Hop culture there has been a new age of djing with the advancement of technology, which has taken away the skill of actually wanting to be a true turntabilist dj who could cut and scratch like no other.
