SYNOPSIS

Lincoln Barrington Minott, better known as Sugar Minott, was born in Kingston Jamaica on May 25, 1956. He made his first important recordings for Studio One, the seminal studio and record label owned by influential producer Clement "Coxsone" Dodd. He pioneered the dancehall style of laying new vocal tracks over original 1960s backing tapes instead of using live musicians in the studio. Minott died in St. Andrew Parish, Jamaica, on July 10, 2010.

EARLY LIFE

Born one of eight children in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1956, Sugar Minott began working with sound systems, roving groups of deejays and MCs, before he entered his teen years. After working with the Sound of Silence Keystone and Gathering of Youth systems, he teamed with Derrick Howard and Tony Tuff to form the singing trio The African Brothers in 1969. Minott's solo career began to take off when he began working as a singer, guitarist and percussionist at Clement "Coxsone" Dodd's influential Studio One, Jamaica's first black-owned studio and record label.

Minott's early singles, including "Hang On Natty," "Mr. DC" and "Jah Jah Children," drew praise and led to the 1977 release of his debut album, Live Loving. After leaving Studio One in 1979, he started his own label, Black Roots, to produce and record up-and-coming artists like Barrington Levy, Tony Tuff, Tenor Saw and Barry Brown.

MUSICAL CAREER

Minott's biggest hit was a cover of the 1971 Michael Jackson tune, "We've Got a Good Thing Going." Minott's version, "Good Thing Going," reached No. 4 on the British singles charts in March of 1981. Earlier, in 1979, he received wide acclaim for two socially conscious singles, "Hard Time Pressure" and "Ghetto-Ology."

Minott became a pioneer of the dancehall genre when he laid new vocals tracks over original 1960s backing tapes instead of live musicians. This method was commonplace for live shows, but Minott brought the practice into the recording studio, sparking a revolution in Jamaican music.

"[Minott] mastered every reggae style and made significant contributions to each of them—from roots and message music into lover's rock, to the computerized techno music of the dancehall genre in the mid-1980s," Roger Steffens, co-founder of the reggae magazine The Beat, told The New York Times.

PERSONAL LIFE AND DEATH

Minott married Maxine Stowe, Clement Dodd's niece and a prominent Jamaican singer in her own right, in 1993.

Minott died in St. Andrew Parish, Jamaica, on July 10, 2010. He was survived by his wife, Stowe, and 14 children—four with Stowe, and the others from previous relationships.

As many soundmen and soundwomen my favourite era when it comes to reggae and dancehall is the 90’s. No autotune, hardcore vibe and powerful riddims. It has been already a lot of 90’s mixtapes released featuring most of the times the same songs and artists that are the anthems and icons of the decade. It did not make so much sense to release one more.. That is why im starting a year by year mixtape series starting from 1990 called REMEMBER. The selection is made from the charts of the year so we can remember which tunes were hot and also the evolution of the music in 10 years!

DJ 745 is an independent reggae selector/journalist based in Leicester, UK who presents his Irie Jamms show on Leicester's Radio2Funky 95FM featuring an international selection of roots reggae, revival and dub along with the latest music news, artist interviews, album reviews and exclusive previews.

True to his name, DJ 745 has been a record collector/journalist of reggae music for over three decades and regularly spins music on his preferred format -7" vinyl. His vast collection of reggae spans five decades. He has travelled extensively to search for rare reggae vinyl to add to his collection. His initial love for reggae music began when he was a youth in 1990 when he heard an infectious beat blasting out of the world-famous Daddy Kool Records in London. This led to the purchase of his first reggae records by Eek A Mouse and Dennis Brown. The rest they say is history.

Over the years DJ 745 has travelled to Jamaica, Japan, America and throughout Europe regularly tracing back the origins of reggae music and revisiting reggae landmarks including the original location of King Tubby’s Studio in Waterhouse and Treasure Isle Studios in Downtown Kingston.  With a strong passion to help to preserve reggae music he has interviewed artists young and old including Bunny Wailer, Ken Boothe, Marcia Griffiths, Beres Hammond, Jah9, Raging Fyah, Micah Shemaiah, Morgan Heritage, Luciano, Tarrus Riley, Etana, Chronixx, Protoje, Busy Signal, Freddie Mcgregor, and Horace Andy.

In the earlier part of his music career, DJ 745 played on a number of community stations in Leicester, including Fresh FM and has also been involved in Restricted Service License radio stations including Juice FM, and Vision FM.  He has also been a guest DJ on BBC Radio Leicester and hosted weekly reggae shows on internet radio stations include Zion Highness and Reggaespace.com before working with World A Reggae on a number of projects including the Uprising Acoustic Sessions and a series of video interviews including ‘Reggae History Reasonings’.
