D.J. is a New Orleans-born, Los Angeles-based rapper-songwriter with a talent for immersing listeners into any storyline. Coming nearly one year after the release of the bass-thumping Drill-like single “Been Broke”, 5ive Records CEO straps up to deliver one of the most diverse debuts of Hip-Hop to date. From the proclamations of the intro “I Am” to the testimonies of “Dreamin”, D.J. draws from a wide range of inspiration and energy to deliver these storylines. Tha Come Up allows listeners to dive back into a 90s house party with tracks like “Slide!” and then fast-forward 20 years to the streets of Louisiana to jig to ‘bucking’ beats like “Trenches”. The melody heavy soul-driven tracks “4L Or Not” and “Where Tha Love At” give listeners a chance to experience the compassion embedded in his words. D.J. is a natural artist who paints vivid pictures that come to life as easily imaginable and familiar movies, visuals or not, and this is exhibited no better in prophecies like “Anxiety”. The EP finale “26” is a climatic tribute to his late friend Thaddeus Wattis who was “a living testimony of where you’re from can never determine how far you can go.” This EP, Tha Come Up, is the New Orleans youngster’s warning of an introduction that D.J. has arrived to prove just that.
