هذا البرنامج من إنتاج مها النبوي، كاتبة وصحفية متخصصة في الموسيقى، وأدهم زيدان، موسيقي ومهندس صوت. 

في هذه الحلقة من «كتالوج» نقابل الفنانة ندى الشاذلي، لنتكلم عن «أهوار» أول ألبوماتها الموسيقية. صدر «أهوار» عن تسجيلات «نوى» عام 2017، إلا أن ندى كانت بدأت كتابة الأغاني وتأليف الموسيقى فيه من 2013، وواصلت تطويره والتجريب فيه بطرق مختلفة، في حفلاتها الموسيقية الحية في أوروبا والولايات المتحدة ودول أخرى، منها أندونيسيا.

 سنسأل ندى عن مصادر إلهامها، عن عملية تسجيل الألبوم مع أكثر من عشرين موسيقي في كندا، عن كيف أسست فرقتها مع شريف المصري وكونراد أجنس وموريتز أجنس، من أجل أن تلعب الألبوم في عروض حية، وكيف تغير ذلك أثناء جولتها في الولايات المتحدة.

سنسمع سويًا نسخًا مختلفة من «أنا عشقت»، أغنية سيد درويش، التي أعادت ندى توزيعها مع سام شلبي، وضمتها لـ«أهوار». أيضًا ستحكي لنا ندى عن أغنية «برزخ» التي كتبتها مع عليا أيمن، ووزعتها ندى وسام وموريس لوقا، كما ستلعبها لنا على الجيتار في الاستديو، لتساعدنا على تخيّل عملية إبداعها من البداية.

Katalog is a podcast by Mada Masr, about the process, production, and deeper meaning behind select works from the contemporary Arab and North African music landscape. Co-produced and hosted by music journalist/writer Maha ElNabawi and musician/sound engineer Adham Zidan, the podcast offers behind-the-scenes stories of musicians, their inspiration, and their process through a dynamic sonic experience.

In each episode, we feature a guest musician, and together we break down their tracks to give our listener a more intimate understanding of the complex layers that make up their unique sound.

In this episode of Katalog, we sit with Nadah El Shazly to talk about Ahwar, her debut solo album. Ahwar was released on Nawa Recordings in 2017, but Nadah began writing the body of work as far back as 2013, and continued to evolve it through different live performances across Europe, America, and other countries including Indonesia until the onset of corona in 2020. 

We speak with Nada about her source of inspiration, and the process of recording the album with close to 20 musicians in Canada. We also speak with her about how she constructed her band with Cherif El Masri, Conrad Agnas and Mauritz Agnaz in order to perform it live, and how this changed during her tour in America. 

We also listen to various live and recorded iterations of the song “Ana Ishiqt”, originally by Sayyed Darwish, and rearranged by Nadah and Sam Shalabi for Ahwar. Nadah also helps us to understand how “Barzakh” came to be, a song co-written with Alia Ayman, and arranged by Nadah, Sam, and Maurice Louca. Nadah also plays us the bassline of the song on a guitar in the studio to help us hear how it all began. 

But to begin with, Nadah explains how the album started, on performing solo, and her work with Maurice, Sam, and his band, Land of Kush.

VIBRATIO)))NS is back with a new year & a new volume. to celebrate the series turning 6yrs old, I'll be sharing mixes on a bi-monthly basis, with the focus continuing from last year's theme of inviting guest djs to contribute to it. These are ppl that I admire who I believe deserve as much shine as possible, have a fantastic taste in music & an essential statement to say through the sound they showcase. The structure remains the same: extended 3hr sets, all genres all styles. (Big love for the artwork design by the lovely @akshay-gite)

First up, the homie Said Durra aka @Sadeedo. We go way back to our Dubai days, where we would constantly meet at parties & after parties, sharing mutual taste & mates. We've both left Dubai following our own pursuits, but alwasy stayed connected & appreciating what we're doing from a distance. Sadeedo is now based in Ibiza where he is bringing sunshine through his sets, as well as working on his own productions, with his first EP 'Desert Island' being released on, melding together electronic influences & his arabic roots. "The Bathtub at Pikes is one of my favourite places to play at here on the island. It's a tiny, intimate space, and has a real house party vibe, with people cramming in and climbing all over the place. Good sound in there too! It's a constant battle - a fun one though - trying to stop people spilling drinks all over the equipment or falling on top of you while simultaneously djing. I also love that I'm not facing the crowd in there, I'm facing a mirror. But (before you call me a vain bastard) I'm not really looking at it, I'm just getting into the tunes and playing what really excites me, which I think is the ideal recipe for a good set. I really enjoyed myself on this particular night in September last year...it was really hot, but the crowd was great, and joined me on a journey where we ventured to many of my favourite musical places."

VIBRATIO)))NS #20 - Guest Mix by Sadeedo

Final mix of feb as we stick to our bi-monthly mix plan, and this one comes courtesy of the wonderful Michael aka kingsleepy1st .

I met Michael through various moments when I came to Berlin, and even though the initial interactions were brief they always left me wanting to get to know him more, as always had a genuine energy to him. We had mutual friends and so many told me how great a DJ he is as well, and from listening to his mixes on Soundcloud and on refugeworldwide (where he hosts the show Wet Dreams) I really connected with his deep sense and love for music. Had the pleasure of inviting him to play the 2nd black-is in Berlin, where he played a fantastic (as expected) set, and we followed it with a brief B2B that was one of my fav moments that year.

He's been high on my list to invite and contribute to the VIBRATIO)))NS series, and what he sent has truly floored me. Part mix, part sound collage; he explores the themes of the Black experiences in the most poetic of ways. I cannot state how deeply moving and meaningful this mix is, and I'm so grateful to Michael for putting so much effort and care into it.

"The intention behind this mix was to create a space for reflection on some of what we have experienced & witnessed with such force in the past year - war, oppression, racism, inequality, and the apathy of many in the face of the suffering of other humans. At the same time, I wanted to highlight the power of protest, the strength from unity, and the role of hope and love in building a better world.I move through a range of some of the emotions I felt in response to the darkest moments…before gradually giving way to moments of prayer, healing, and empowerment, trying to ultimately lead to something more hopeful. A reference that really inspired me was Prayer / Protest / Peace from Max Roach’s We Insist! Freedom Now Suite, a track that captures the emotional spectrum of the fight for justice—raw anger, pain, and the hope of eventual peace. Released in 1960, during a time of intense social and political upheaval, the album was a powerful response to global struggles against colonialism and apartheid, and an act of protest in support of the civil rights movement. If you haven’t heard the album yet, this current moment would seem to be a poignant time to listen to it. My hope is that this mix resonates with you in some way — whether it is simply a feeling, a reflection or through some action. If it does I’d love to hear from you and please share any tracks (below in the comments) that you also think can apply to these times somehow…
