“Produced by DJ Premier.”  From Gang Starr, The Notorious B.I.G., Nas, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, Common, Mos Def, Snoop Dogg, Cee-Lo Green, Mac Miller, Joey Bada$$, Ludacris, The Game & his most recent vehicle; PRhyme; over the course of twenty-five trendsetting years, those four words have become synonymous with the cornerstone of hip-hop’s sound.

However, “Preemo” as he’s affectionately known has always been a conduit for artists of all genres to attach their lyrics to his complex rhythm of the streets--- D’Angelo, Macy Gray, Janet Jackson, Maroon 5, Miguel, Neneh Cherry, Lion Babe, Yuna, Anderson .Paak, & Christina Aguilera (which his work won a Grammy for) to name just a few.  Throughout it all; Grammy’s, Platinum and Gold plaques, undeniable legendary status, Premier has orchestrated a unique sound that remains a hallmark of positive and advanced music.

While Premier has previously collaborated with iconic female artists, in none of the aforementioned examples has the iconic producer/DJ entirely produced one of their projects. With a resume like Premier’s, it takes a lot to get his attention—and perhaps more importantly his respect. 

Enter Torii Wolf, a singer-songwriter and musician from Wantagh, New York who traded coasts–bouncing around West Coast cities and enhanced herself artistically; shunning categories, confinement, and convention.  Torii also just happens to be the first female artist to have her entire project (the forthcoming album entitled Flow Riiot) produced by Preemo.  “Torii has such a weird, wicked style,” Premier offers. “It’s just very left field—reminiscent of a Bjork or something like that. She is so unique and versatile; she writes, sings and is an accomplished guitarist and drummer.  But image-wise, there is no comparison. Subject-wise, Torii is in a whole different place.”

The versatility Premier hints at is evident on Torii Wolf’s first single, the aptly-titled, “1st,” a war-torn and wistful ode to unrequited love and commitment that ultimately leaves more questions than answers, as she ponders “what does it take to keep you from running away.”  Digging into his past catalog, Premier reshuffles the deck on a Rakka Iriscience vocal sample from his “Good As Gone” production from Dilated Peoples Directors Of Photography album to create another spellbinding scratch-chorus “I’ve seen the last come first, I’ve seen the first last.” 

Premiered exclusively by Pitchfork, “1st” offers just a glimpse at the musical symmetry and bond Torii developed with Premier creating Flow Riiot and it happened so organically that Torii feels as if something greater was at play, as if the stars aligned to make this musical marriage happen “The great thing about Premier is he’s a tailor and he has this rare and innate ability to cater his sound around who he is working with to accentuate an artist’s strengths; but you can always still tell its Premier.”

The last month has been filled with "1st's" for Torii Wolf; premiering her debut solo track, 1st,” with Pitchfork and the corresponding video with Vevo,  announcing her debut solo album, Flow Riiot, (that just happens to be produced by DJ Premier) and now her “1st” remix featuring Dilated Peoples; which was premiered today by Mass Appeal. 

The original version of “1st” found Premier digging into his past catalog and reshuffling the deck on a Rakka Iriscience vocal sample from his “Good As Gone” production which appeared on Dilated Peoples Directors Of Photography album to create another spellbinding scratch-chorus “I’ve seen the last come first, I’ve seen the first last.” With the release of the remix today, “1st” has officially come full circle as Torii and Preemo recruit Evidence and Rakka to officially join them; and with their respective verses and Premier implementing extra punch to the drums and additional piano harmonies—the “1st” (Remix) sounds like an entirely different song.

“I changed the arrangement of Torii's verses and removed the second verse completely” Premier relayed to Mass Appeal.  “I added some extra piano harmonies and it fit on the first attempt. I played all of the sounds; including the piano so there are no samples on the original nor the remix.  Ev and Rakaa sent me 24 bars in total and I split them up into a sixteen and an eight bar set up.   They sounded so good from the original it was a no brainer to get them on the Remix.” 

“When I first laid the song down with Preem we didn't really know where the song would end up" Torii stated.  Preem makes the beat and I express the emotion it evokes inside of me. From there it evolves. Preem is brilliant and he found the perfect line from “Good As Gone” to throw into the mix of the song. I am blown away by what Evidence and Raaka have come up with on this Remix. I love how well they were able to connect with the concept. To feel understood and to hear how other people can unleash a similar emotion (in their own words) and share an understanding of the story is an incredible feeling.” 

Discussing the “1st” (Remix) with Mass Appeal, Ev and Rakaa discuss how Remix discussions began in earnest almost immediately.   “I thought it was dope right off the bat” Evidence shared.  “I kept playing it and really peeped what she was talking about; and felt it even more. Of course I was excited that Preem was cutting our voices up.  I think every rapper secretly wishes that will happen to them.” Rakaa expressed similar sentiments “When I first heard the original, I was kind of shocked because I didn't know we were going to be such an integral part of the song. It's just a line, but Premier put that coal under pressure until it became a diamond. The power and emotion of Tori's voice mixed with a uniquely dope chamber of Boom-Bap created something that is somehow both dark and brilliant--almost haunting. I wanted to be a part of any remix that they were doing immediately, so it was an honor to get the call from my big brother.”

“Ya’ll Feel That”?  Insomnia is a bit*h…  While some suffer from it due to a persisting medical condition, creative types, those whose can’t keep their mind from racing due to the excessive thoughts and ideas that permeate (even in a dormant state) make it nearly impossible to unplug.  At least for the creative types outlets exist; consciously or unconsciously.  In Torii Wolf & DJ Premier’s case that’s creating dope music….

While Premier has previously collaborated with iconic female artists, in none of the aforementioned examples has the iconic producer/DJ entirely produced one of their projects. With a resume like Premier’s, it takes a lot to get his attention—and perhaps more importantly his respect.

 “Shadows Crawl” is the only track I did not specifically create for Torii’s album” DJ Premier tells Vibe.  “I made it for Yuna’s new album, but she went for the second demo (which would go on to become the projects lead-single “Places To Go”).  When we finished recording Torii’s debut, Flow Riiot, I felt like we needed one more song and I played her this beat.  Torii wrote “Shadows Crawl” on the spot and cut the vocals.  I immediately knew that this should be the follow up to our first single “1st.” 

“Shadows Crawl” continues to display the musical symmetry and bond Torii developed with Premier; “Preem played me this beat he made for Yuna that she didn’t end up using and I instantly felt connected to it” Torii relayed to Vibe.  “I’ve never been a good sleeper, I sleep in tiny intervals, if at all, and when I do I alk in my sleep.  It’s such a vulnerable place, to be verbally expressive and not know what could creep out of your subconscious.  I love Preem’s vibe on this record, it brings me to that “Eldritch Place” (wondrous and curious places).  Performing “Shadows Crawl” together live has been unreal.”

“Shadows Crawl” inception has quite an interesting backdrop and it was the last track recorded for Flow Riiot; as it was the only track Preemo did not specifically create for Torii, the track was initially sent to Yuna who ended up picking another demo from Premier (that demo would later resurface as “Places To Go,” which was the lead-single from Yuna’s latest album).  Torii was the beneficiary and upon being played the instrumental, she wrote “Shadows Crawl” on the spot and cut the vocals. Premier immediately knew it was going to be the second single from their collaborative project.

Real DJ’s do real things and just as he did with Torii’s first single, the aptly-titled “1st,” by getting Dilated Peoples to hop on the remix, he and Torii have tapped another fast-rising star in Jamla/Roc Nation’s Rapsody for a remix of “Shadows Crawl.” “I felt Rapsody fit the picture perfectly” DJ Premier relayed to Pigeons & Planes.  “Of course to make it complete, I threw in some scratches in the intro for the underground DJ’s so we always have that representation.” In her comments to Pigeons & Planes, Torii was very eager to hear where Rapsody would take the remix “I was very excited to work with Rapsody and to hear what she could do with this and I couldn’t be happier with how it came out.  Rapsody adds an entirely new vibe to the record and fully emulated the concept of the song in her own unique way and voice.  Her flow tells a story so inline with what I wrote about.  I’m honored to be working with such incredible people and artists."

Rapsody obviously enjoyed playing with the concept of the track, as she stated “I had fun working on this.  I thought the concept was creative, so I just wanted to expand on the idea of having these inner secrets of loving someone else and that coming out in the middle of the night; talking in your sleep—laying next to your lover.  I love the song and really enjoyed working with Torii, her sound is so unique.  Her and Preemo sound so dope together. I was happy to be a part of it all.”

Torii Wolf f/ Rapsody 'Shadows Crawl (Open Eyes DJ Premier Remix)'

When Miguel started promotions for his third studio album (Wildheart 2016), he did so with an Instagram post of him and DJ Premier in the studio together working on a track together.  That track, recorded during the making of Wildheart, mysteriously appeared in a different form, under the title “Damned,” when the album (which would be later nominated for two Grammy Awards) was officially released.

Today, we not only get answers and closure, but the fans receive a pleasant surprise with the official release of a great new single featuring Hip-Hop icon DJ Premier and R&B superstar Miguel. 

“The snippet you heard on Miguel’s Instagram, mine is the original” DJ Premier declared.  Miguel and I were vibing at a session and just really seeing what we could come up with.  What we came up with was a dope, but rough version of what you hear today.  Miguel and I had deadlines and we never got around to finishing it. We both really believed in this version of the track and we both felt very strongly that it needed to come out and be released as a single” Miguel and I approached the label about releasing it and everyone was on-board” Premier clarified.

Miguel and Premier always wanted to find a special way to release this track for the fans, now entitled “2 LOVIN U,” and true to their words, they have. On Valentine’s Day, ESPN began playing 20-second snippets of “2 LOVIN U” on SportsCenter and First Take leading up to its retail release today.  “The track having a different title gives it a new light” DJ Premier states.  “Wait until you see the video”! 

“2 LOVIN U” is the first release from Premier’s new imprint TTT (To The Top) and is now available worldwide.  

Also, in addition to scoring the entire series, DJ Premier is also an executive producer for VH1’s “The Breaks” series which premiered last night and will be airing every Monday at 9pm (EST).

MC Eiht’s New Album, Which Way Iz West, Executive Produced By DJ Premier Will Be Released On 6-9-17 

GEAH! For two decades MC Eiht has been one of hip-hop’s most recognizable voices in hip-hop; and undisputedly one of Compton’s finest originators and emcees. 

A straight menace, MC Eiht burst onto the scene with Compton’s Most Wanted Music To Driveby.  Released just months after the LA Riots, Music To Driveby was a manifesto for the nihilism, frustration and anger that permeated the region and is universally hailed as a Gangsta Rap classic. 

Similarly, Eiht also contributed vital components and compositions to genre defining movies, offering the chilling “Growin’ Up In The Hood” to Boyz N The Hood and following up Music To Driveby with a star turn as A-Wax in Menace 2 Society, which included his stand-out contribution (“Streight Up Menace”) to the movies soundtrack. 

Though accredited as MC Eiht featuring Compton’s Most Wanted, Eiht took on a more singular role with We Come Strapped, which was certified Gold and peaked at #1 on the Billboard charts and his sophomore solo project Death Threatz which debuted at #3 on the Billboard Charts. 

While Eiht has always remained active; including an EP release (Keep It Hood), his scene-stealing appearance on Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City (“m.A.A.d City”) and his recent contribution (“Central Ave”) to DJ Quik & Problem’s Rosecrans album (which officially ended his vicious feud with Quik) Eiht gallantly returns with his first solo-album in a decade, Which Way Iz West, which will be released on 6-9-17 and aligns him with DJ Premier, who executive produced the project and also produces four tracks as well (Eiht’s long-time collaborator Brenk Sinatra produced the rest of the project). The union of these two legends will be released conjunctly by Eiht’s Blue Stamp label and Preemo’s Year Round Records imprint.

“I decided to release the Dub C track first as an ode to true west coast music and because Dub is a true west coast originator” Eiht stated.  “I wanted to give fans a familiar taste of what were about and due to Crazy Toones passing away, it just seemed like the appropriate way to honor my cuzzins as they were one of the first artists I had the honor of rocking with early in my career.  This is for the west coast and our heritage and it was only right to Represent Like This.”

For two decades MC Eiht has been one of hip-hop’s most recognizable voices in hip-hop; and undisputedly one of Compton’s finest originators and emcees. 

A straight menace, MC Eiht burst onto the scene with Compton’s Most Wanted Music To Driveby.  Released just months after the LA Riots, Music To Driveby was a manifesto for the nihilism, frustration and anger that permeated the region and is universally hailed as a Gangsta Rap classic. 

Similarly, Eiht also contributed vital components and compositions to genre defining movies, offering the chilling “Growin’ Up In The Hood” to Boyz N The Hood and following up Music To Driveby with a star turn as A-Wax in Menace 2 Society, which included his stand-out contribution (“Streight Up Menace”) to the movies soundtrack. 
Though accredited as MC Eiht featuring Compton’s Most Wanted, Eiht took on a more singular role with We Come Strapped, which was certified Gold and peaked at #1 on the Billboard charts and his sophomore solo project Death Threatz which debuted at #3 on the Billboard Charts. 

While Eiht has always remained active; including an EP release (Keep It Hood), his scene-stealing appearance on Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City (“m.A.A.d City”) and his recent contribution (“Central Ave”) to DJ Quik & Problem’s Rosecrans album (which officially ended his vicious feud with Quik) Eiht gallantly returns with his first solo-album in a decade, Which Way Iz West, which will be released on 6-30-17 and aligns him with DJ Premier, who executive produced the project and also produces four tracks as well (Eiht’s long-time collaborator Brenk Sinatra produced the rest of the project). Featured guests on Which Way Iz West include WC, B-Real, Xzibit, Kurupt, Lady Of Rage, MayLAy, Big Mike, The Outlawz, Bumpy Knuckles (AKA Freddie Foxxx) and Compton’s Most Wanted.

The union of these two legends will be released conjunctly by Eiht’s Blue Stamp label and Preemo’s Year Round Records imprint. 

After releasing the first video (and single), “Represent Like This” f/ WC and DJ Premier, Eiht unleashes the project’s second single, “Compton Zoo” which was premiered by Vibe. “Compton Zoo” signifies the struggle in and out of music and  how I feel about the current state of hip-hop” Eiht declared to Vibe.  “Just like Preemo digs deep into them crates for the scratch chorus, I can still express myself and dig deep as well.  GEAH.”  DJ Premier also offered Vibe some exclusive comments “Eiht kept sending me new songs to pick from as we were completing the album. “Compton Zoo” was one of the last new tracks he sent me and I immediately told him that this needed to be a single.  I told Eiht, I’m going to put a scratch somehow in the hook so I can be a part of this.  GEAH.”

Just hours after the relaunch of Payday Records, the iconic record label has released its first song “Our Streets” featuring legendary producer DJ Premier and A$AP Ferg, which is available today via digital retailers everywhere. “Our Streets” is the first song released by hip-hop and EDM pioneer Patrick Moxey’s newly relaunched record label. DJ Premier is reunited with former Gang Starr manager Moxey as the first artist to release music on Payday Records. 

“Our Streets” is a true New York hip-hop track, combining DJ Premier’s signature beats and A$AP Ferg’s versatile style to create a classic, raw and energetic sound. The song marks the first time the legendary DJ and rap star have worked together, despite both being prominent figures of the New York hip-hop scene for years. 

“It's a dream to be able to work with the legendary DJ Premier on this record” stated Ferg. “Preemo has worked with all the NYC hip hop icons and greats - Nas, Biggie, Guru, Hov, KRS-one, and The Lox. Just knowing I was working with him pushed me as an MC.” 

"With Ferg, or anybody I work with, they already know my history so they know that I come from the 90s era” DJ Premier said. “Ferg just automatically said 'Don't do what I've been doing on my albums - I want you to do a Preemo style and let me show I can rap to that,' so I was like 'let's do it.' Everybody was happy off jump - no suggestions, no 'I think we should go this direction' - it was an automatic in, out, done, in one day." 

“Our Streets” is available now, and is the first song released by the newly relaunched Payday Records. Patrick Moxey, who is the President and Founder of Ultra Records, Ultra Music and Ultra International Music Publishing, originally formed Payday Records in New York City in 1992. Payday was the first record label to sign Jay Z, releasing his first single “In My Lifetime” in 1995. Other artists signed to Payday throughout the 90s include Jeru the Damaja, Mos Def (via his first group U.T.D.), Showbiz & A.G., Group Home, Guru, WC and the Maad Circle and more. DJ Premier played an integral role in Payday throughout the 1990s, bringing artists like hip-hop duo Group Home and rapper Jeru the Damaja to Payday for release, and producing a number of the label’s biggest hits including “Come Clean,” and “Supa Star.”

“This Griselda, DJ Preemo Shit”! Some things just sound so good on paper, that an eventual pairing seems inevitable.  

The Griselda collective of Westside Gunn, Conway & Benny The Butcher (all emerging stars in their own right) is a unified family movement built on authenticity.  It’s cultural, it’s raw and it’s viral.  Griselda’s ascension, both collectively and individually is palpable.  From their inauspicious Buffalo roots, to signing with Eminem and Shady Records, in a non-plussed industry which advances style over substance, the Griselda juggernaut has created a real and sustaining moment.  With the crews amazing run of both commercial success and critical acclaim there is no disputing that a real street ethos exists. 
 
DJ Premier is a living auteur; his champion sounds have been the authority for the soundtrack of the streets for three decades.  While his ear sets Preem apart from his contemporaries, the legendary creator also has an inimitable ability to build a unique chemistry with each artist he works with. Whether it was Notorious B.I.G., Nas or Jay-Z, Preem has been a constant staple and bridge in Hip-Hop’s retro futurism, assisting in turning fast rising artists into rap royalty.  

“I've wanted to do a record with them individually for a few years now.
I had been listening to Westside Gunn first.  Conway got my lyrical attention very heavy when Alchemist told me to listen to how he rhymes” Premier asserted.  “Then after I got in tune with Benny's songs, I immediately knew that in order to follow up the Casanova record (“WUT U SAID”) it made sense to have all three on the same single. “Headlines” was made organically from a blank canvas at my studio at 2am and it happened so fast; and I loved their work ethic.  Pull the trigger on this one!”

When Conway proclaims on his opening bar “I don’t beef on the internet I approach you,” over Preem’s anthemic boom-bap, the modernization of an aesthetic from NY’s storied street rap movement comes full circle; and you are simultaneously transported back to the block when trunks rattled from blasting a new gem from a just released Clue tape.  

With Griselda, bleak tales of survival and violent escapades are the topics at hand and DJ Premier is a conduit artistically elevating the sound of the life they lead.  And when Benny offers “I sewed the block together like a seamstress, and I lived to tell about it on some Preem shit,” it doesn’t come off as an admission of guilt, as much as it does the realization of a lifelong dream.  

“Working with Preemo was surreal and watching him cook from scratch; I still can’t believe the record is done” exclaimed Westside Gunn.   “Shooting the video in my city (Directed by Jason Goldwatch in Buffalo, NY) makes it even more legendary!  This is just the beginning of our cook up and definitely one of the only things on my bucket list.”
