In celebration of the new record from Rian Treanor on Planet Mu, we got him to deliver the 55th mix in our Bleep Mix series. After Rian Treanor's Contraposition EP, the first release on the revived Warp Records sub-label, Arcola and his releases on Death on Rave, we have been waiting with our ears and feet at the ready for his debut album, and it surely does not disappoint.

With ATAXIA we are welcomed into a sound-world where club sonics are smashed together with delirious abandon. Speed garage, leftfield techno, grime, Braindance and more are all present, with Treanor dissecting the sonic artefacts from bygone eras of clubbing - a garage vocal, a synth pad or an upstart rhythmic archetype from his hometown of Sheffield, creating complex rhythmic constructions.

If you are a fan of the man's music, you'll be a fan of the mix.

Kyouka -響花- is a Drum and Bass based on the concept of the instrument being distorted by the tone of the “Shinobue (篠笛)” flute.
This song uses the traditional instruments in all parts except for the drums.
The bass sound of this song is created by "Mukkuri (ムックリ)", a traditional instrument of the Ainu people.

Kyouka -響花- は、祭りで楽しげな音色を奏でる篠笛により楽器が歪み出すというコンセプトの元に製作されました。
この曲は、ドラム以外のパートは全てなんらかの伝統楽器を使用しています。ベースラインはアイヌの伝統楽器である口琴「ムックリ」により作られています。

最初は篳篥をモチーフにしていましたが、以前の「龍笛を持つ向きが逆になってるおてんば娘」と被るので篠笛となりました。
その結果、響花は六本調子をドヤ顔で構えて祭りを荒らしに来るはた迷惑な中二病持ち低俗妖怪になってしまいました。

響花はなんかいつもっぽいノリを古来の楽器で作ろう、という曲です。生楽器の曲を作ろうではなく、どちらかというとアナログな素材縛りをデジタルにコラージュして曲を作ろうといった趣です。これは2曲目の「千瑠」も同じです。
リズム隊と裏で騒々しいあかりちゃん以外、全て何らかの生楽器素材を使用しています。楽器をそのままサンプリングに使ったのはもちろん原型を留めない音色まで、素材を使ったシンセサイズにより生成されました。
使ったのは篠笛・箏・楊琴・尺八・笙・三味線・太鼓・銅鑼・神楽鈴・風鈴・竹？・口笛？？など。

主軸のベースは、手持ちの口琴「ムックリ」を演奏し、あれこれして潰したものを素材にしています。
随分前に北海道でムックリに触れて以来、私はムックリを使用した何かを作りたい〜とか思いながらムックリの紐が切れてしまい、結局作ること無く終わっていましたが、今回の響花製作にあたりムックリの紐を修復して再演奏することとなりました。
裏でこのベースラインを作るため、下手糞が頑張ってムックリをレコーディングしている間抜けな姿を想像してみてください。

つまりこれは響花が主役になるはずだったのが、ムックリが主役の曲なのです。

イメージはツツジです。ツツジの花言葉は節制・慎み・自制など、真面目で控えめな印象がありながらも、恋愛に関して情熱的な意味も持っています。一方で情熱的すぎるあまり度が過ぎた怒り・嫉妬のような裏の意味合いも持っているのです。またツツジと言えば子供の頃に蜜を吸った方も多いと思いますが、致死にいたる猛毒性のある種類もあります。ツツジには、凛としながらもどこか静かな怒りのようなものが想像できませんか？
上記のような背景とは一切関係なくしょうもない理由で響花はツツジになったのですが、とりあえずこの場を借りて紹介させていただきます。

お祭り花火的な効果音は、2019年に近所の花火大会で録音したものを使いました。コロナが収まってまた花火が見られるといいですね！
