Much of the first verse, and the refrain segment, is adapted from a 110-year-old song by labor-revolutionary folksinger Joe Hill, called "Should I ever be a soldier".

This is not exactly that song, but it branches from that song. Part of folk tradition is adapting old things, and the idea that music belongs to the people. So I took part of "Should I Ever Be A Soldier" and thought "what other sorts workers can contribute beyond just soldiers" and wrote a few more verses. probably this will get more verses and i may go back and incorporate more of the original (again, 130-year-old) song which also talks about military spending while people starve.
