Other Goodness, the Berlin based imprint returns for their fifth release later this month, with two heavyweights of underground electronic music in tow. Andrew Meecham and Sean Johnston join forces for their first collaborative release, as Unknown Genre. Meecham, the multi-aliased producer better known as The Emperor Machine comes together with Johnston AKA Hardway Bros to create two blistering originals, which arrive backed with a remix from Heavenly Recordings’ trio The Orielles.

Opening track Elevator Ride is a driving acid-heavy number, replete with dense layers of drum machines and piano stabs that reverberate off into the cosmos. The propulsive rhythms and arpeggiated synths grab a hold of you and take you on this elevator ride into another dimension. 

Cthulhu Macula on the other hand is a hypnotic slice of low-slung tribal acid. The dub-drenched track’s mantric chanting hook you in to the groove, as it builds around you, with swirling percussion and a heavy 303 bassline underpinning proceedings.

The package is rounded off with The Orielles unique take on the title track. The group considerably pull down the tempo and take the track off into ambient territory, channeling Kraftwerk to create a deeply emotive tapestry of sound, adding vocal snippets, melodica and even shoegaze guitars to the original track’s reverberated piano stabs.

Although sound is his medium, what is seen is central to Larionov’s new 12”; I Want To Believe. After scanning the heavens, the Russian producer lands with six tracks that encompass a spectrum of electronics. A glistening dawn of bright melodies and murky basslines introduces “Morning Light”, crisp percussion adding balance and ballast. Aquatic lines and soulful arcs are at the core of “Across the Sky” before the bold synth stabs and rasping rhythms of “External Twilight.” Illuminating the flip is the sci-fi inspired “Strange Lights” with the eclipsing shades and tones of “Shadows” darkening speakers while igniting floors. The close is the future gazing “Space and Time.” Fluid strings, reverberating arpeggiators and vocoder lyrics are kept in check by incising snares in this superb finale.

Riotvan is thrilled to announce the latest installment of the "Familiar Faces” series, with label bosses Panthera Krause and Peter Invasion once again opening their arms and welcoming an exceptional group of friends. Some familiar faces return, while others make a glorious Riotvan debut. Originally conceived as a four-track release, in line with previous installments, the project took on a life of its own as the incredible music continued to flow in.

Today, we are delighted to present "Familiar Faces IV," an eight-track selection that showcases the freshest and most diverse sounds from a group of our incredibly talented friends. Riotvan regulars Shubostar, New Hook, and Sexy Lazer & School Of X, invite listeners on their journey exploring deep, punky, and cinematic soundscapes, while our Belgian buddy, DC Salas, takes a deep dive into the acidic depths. PREMIERE: Tony y Not - A New Normal

All musical movements require a spark to set them alight; in the case of Japanese house music, that spark was provided by the forward-thinking resident DJs of The Bank in Roppongi, Tokyo. In 1989, to celebrate the ground-breaking club’s first birthday, the venue released a 12” EP featuring first-time productions from three of its DJs, Junichi Soma, Shuji Wada and Strong Katsuya AKS Katsuya Sano.

Widely considered to be one of the first ever EP of house music produced in Japan, 1st Unit was never officially released. Instead, 500 of the 1000 copies pressed were given away at The Bank’s first birthday party, with the rest initially being sold not in local record stores, but rather the venue’s own in-house shop. Three decades on, the 12” is finally set to get its first worldwide release via Rush Hour’s Store JPN Series.

The record has its roots in The Bank’s willingness to give its ever-changing roster of DJs a free hand to play what they liked – at the time a rarity in Tokyo nightclubs, whose musical offerings usually revolved around strictly defined playlists. At The Bank in 1989, it was not only common to hear European body music and the kind of post-disco New York productions associated with Larry Levan’s sets at the Paradise Garage, but also acid house – something not offered at the time by other clubs in the city.

This cutting-edge blend of sounds, combined with the venue’s unique decor (it was modeled on the inside of a London bank, complete with a cashier’s window to take entrance fees), made The Bank a go-to spot for young party-goers, celebrities and forward-thinking Japanese musicians (Ryuichi Sakamoto was reportedly a weekly visitor).

When it came to celebrating the club’s birthday by cutting a unique record, it made sense for The Bank’s owners to turn to three of their most exciting resident DJs, who were assisted by Heigo Tani and Jun Ebi. The collective name, 1st Unit, was chosen to reflect the fact that all three resident DJs were debutants with no previous studio experience.

As this reissue proves, the music remains timeless, magical, and authentic to the sound of American house productions of the period – albeit with occasional twists,. Katsuya Sano’s EP opener, ‘I Need Love’, sounds like a twist on Larry Heard productions of the period – all jacking TR-909 drums, undulating analogue bass, dreamy JUNO synthesizer chords and evocative vocal samples.

The influence of Chicago acid house is also evident on Junichi Souma’s ‘Ubnormal Life’, whose unusual title contains what he says was an intentional misspelling. Driven forwards by restless drum machine handclaps, sweet chords and rising and falling melodic motifs, the track is an energetic and uplifting treat.

Perhaps the most influential of the three tracks at the time – within Japan at least – was Shuji Wada’s similarly misspelled ‘Endless Load’. Deeper and more melodic with a more expansive arrangement, the track’s combination of marimba-style lead lines, tribal drum patterns, dreamy chords and jazz-funk influenced bass offered a loose blueprint for the more successful and better-known Japanese deep house tracks that followed.

As part of the ten-year anniversary Dekmantel presents the final record in a ten-part-EP series. Split into two parts due to its immensity, the final instalment is a re-issue of Tony Allen’s ‘Asiko (In A Silent Mix)’ originally released in 1999 and remixes by Motor City Drum Ensemble and Ricardo Villalobos. The last record in the series sees MCDE delivering a trademark track that will send dance floors on fire worldwide.

Part two of the EP features the Motor City Drum Ensemble remix, and the original “In A Silent Mix” version from 1999; a track out of its time when released on Allen’s sole record “Black Voices”. A long serving Dekmantel veteran, Danilo Plessow was there from the start. After compiling the first Selector’s compilation last year, MCDE turns Tony Allen’s masterpiece in a jam, with added house beats, giving the funk number the edit treatment. The final mix sounds like the kind of track you would hear MCDE play in one of his sets as he’s firing up the heat. The organ sounds and trumpets are left high in the mix, to create an unforgettable hook that resonates throughout, in complete Motor City style.

Highlighting the diversity of sounds that have come to represent the Dutch label and festival series, the EPs to date have encompassed a range of artists and genres, featuring label favourites, as well as whole bunch of debuting artists. The EP series kicked off in March 2018, and over the course of a year featured the likes of Gigi Masin, Lena Willikens, Burnt Friedman, Donato Dozzy, The Egyptian Lover, Palms Trax, and more.
