EPM Podcast 164 comes from Detroit man DJ Rolando. Having made his name as The Aztec Mystic on Underground Resistance and as Los Hermanos (on his own eponymous label) alongside Gerald Mitchell, he now runs his second label venture R3 (Roland Rocha Records) and exclusively releases his own music on the imprint. This mix captures then man in techno funk heaven as he brings together tracks from Steve Rachmad, Rennie Foster, R.M.K., Jeran Fortis, Ribe & Roll Dann, Mark Broom, The Exaltics, Elisa Bee, Mr G & Duncan Forbes, Klint and of course some hot up and coming floor bombs from the man himself!

Rolando grew up in south west Detroit, a Hispanic district, and was heavily influenced by his cultural Latin rhythms and percussion. Inspired from an early age by his musician father, he pursued his own interest in music and became well known and respected within the community. It was later when he heard Jeff Mills in 1985 as ‘The Wizard’ that he discovered the innovative sounds of Techno. Through a mutual friend he was introduced to Mike Banks and joined Underground Resistance in 1994. 

In 1999 'Knights of the Jaguar', although not Rolando's first release on UR, turned perceptions of Techno on their head, breaking into other genres of dance music and becoming a classic in the boxes of DJs such as Tenaglia, Oakenfold and Gilles Peterson. The track has a long legacy of reworking and lives on nearly 25 years later inspiring audiences from all genres. Rolando continues to work internationally as a DJ and still preaches the word of techno to enthusiastic crowds the world over.

With music, drums were my first love.

The energy you feel behind a kit is unreal. It’s why I started playing in hardcore punk, metal and thrash bands at 15, where I really started to understand how rhythm changes a song’s dynamic.

But when I started studying Music Tech at college, the only hardcore I played was 90s rave classics. This was a life-changing period for me. I was exploring techno, dub, garage, and basically anything electronic, then spinning the finds at my mate’s house parties.

Then by 2019, I was DJing around Bristol and ended up getting a residency at a local club called, The Old Crown Courts. That’s basically where I learnt my foundations.

Since leaving the UK for Saigon, I’ve met some incredible people and connected with the city’s super supportive scene. In a pretty short time, I’ve already played several events, festivals and clubs like The Obs, Lighthouse, and the Villa Project.

For my Mogra mix, I created a hybrid set recorded in my mate’s living room. I think the need for a live element in my sets recently comes from playing the drums, so I’ve started using a sampler to add voice samples and warped elements to create deeper, more textured and evolving soundscapes.

Italian imprint Opilec Music and It’s founder I-Robots presents a new release this September, entitled ‘Dimah’ and coming
courtesy of Hong Kong’s Ocean Lam and Ukrainian artist Andrey Sirotkin.
Ocean Lam has become a figurehead for the Hong Kong underground over the past decade as well as further afield throughout
Asia and Europe, DJing at notable festivals and clubs like Sonar Hong Kong, Wilde Möhre and Club Der Visionaere, this latest release adds to Ocean’s growing catalogue which has seen her release on Detroit’s Moteur Ville Musique and Germany’s Biotop.
Here, Ocean joins forces with Kyiv’s Andrey Sirotkin, founder of Vyrii Records, global DJ since 2004 and a regular at many of the Ukrainian capital’s leading nightclubs. The package is presented on Opilec Music by its leading man, I-Robots who is a friend of Ocean and has played her parties in Hong Kong several times and heard the initial demo when Ocean was in Turin in April of 2023, soon after this release was born…
Leading is the ‘I-Robots Edit’ of ‘Dimah’, a subtly unfurling journey through a gritty bass line, textural atmospherics, dubbed
out stab sequences and crunchy drums. The ‘I-Robots Extended Reconstruction’ follows and takes thing down a more loop-led
route via circling bass flutters, crisp 4/4 drums, dub reggae chants and ever unfolding, fluctuating dub delays throughout, a
‘Dub Reconstruction’ follows this, as the name would suggest laying focus solely on the raw groove.
Following next is the ‘Reconstruction Take 1’, a more tension led interpretation fuelled by howling textural synths, robust
upfront drums and the compositions driving bass line before ‘Reconstruction Take 2’ eases in an amalgamation of new
resonant chords and dubbed out effects across its nine-minute duration. A ‘Dub Reconstruction’ version then rounds out the
release.

EPM Podcast 169 comes from DJ and modular legend Freddy Fresh. To say the Minneapolis born and based Freddy Fresh has history is a somewhat understatement. His first studio recording was released on Boogie Down Productions, with Fresh remixing a track for 'The Man & His Music Dedication' album for Scott La Rock & KRS- One, and he has since recorded for over 100 independent record labels, including major labels Sony UK, Virgin, BMG UK and Harthouse Germany and is also founder of the record labels Howlin' Records, Electric Music Foundation, Analog and Sockett. Here the sonic alchemist hits us with a hybrid live modular & DJ set as he drops a slew of unreleased mixes, edits and remixes woven together with Fred’s own modular synthesis.

Freddy has shared stages with artist such as Bjork, Daft Punk, Bob Dylan, Eminem, Metallica, Blink 182, Violent Femmes, Grandmaster Flash and has remixed songs for Delakota, Tito Puente, Gus Gus, KRS1, Eminem, Heaven 17 amongst others. He has performed over 200 radio shows worldwide, has appeared on over 25 worldwide music television programs, has produced the famed Essential Mix for BBC1, as well as several Ministry of Sound sessions, hosted the late John Peel's sessions twice on BBC as well as Annie Nightingale's programme. He is also the author of The Rap Records 1st and 2nd Editions and winner of the ARSC Journalism Award.

On 29 September, Freddy returns with the multi-dimensional, genre-defying album ’35 Years of Music’ on EPM Music. On the new album Freddy showcases his myriad styles and genre-hopping sensibilities with his innate encyclopaedic music knowledge. This man simply can’t be tied to one style for too long and his appetite to try new forms means that the new album takes on electro, drum n bass, hip-hop, house, downtempo and IDM within 17 expansive tracks. As the late great Andrew Weatherall declared, ‘that man knows how to make electro!’

After getting hold of his mums record player as a kid Alan started to buy vinyl in the late 80's and got his first set of belt driven turntables at 15 and started learning to mix House music and early Rave and Hardcore records. Fast forward a few years and a set of Technics 1200 decks Alan was playing Techno at free parties around Essex, Cambridgeshire and London and was quickly a regular on the London club circuit playing alongside Techno legends Ben Sims, Colin Dale, Mark Williams, DJ Bone, Mark Broom, Inigo Kennedy, Terry Mitchell & many more. 

In the late 90's Alan had a regular slot on one of the first internet radio stations "Interface" which in turn led to him founding his own London based "Frequency Radio" which was an outlet for all things underground and electronic focusing heavy on Electro music. In 2006 Alan moved to Vietnam and Cambodia throwing parties and dropping beats in Nha Trang, Phnom Penh & Saigon under his Soul Jazz Funksters Alias and his own name for all things electronic. Heavy influences from Detroit Techno define his sound and a DJ that is happy warming up the floor or keeping the groove flowing with that all important Soul & Funk ingrained in the beats. Currently based in Vietnam you can find him DJ'ing at The Lighthouse & WAM in Saigon and other top venues around the country.
