Australian jazz funk ensemble Kerbside Collection return with dusty grooves of “Round The Corner”, the second single to be taken from their forthcoming fourth studio album of the same name, following the lush & laidback “‘Glaze”.

Referring to some of the ‘unknowns’ and ‘uncertainties’ around the corner post cv-19, “Round The Corner” is also an uplifting groove affirmation looking forward to the positive things, and seasons to come round these kinds of unknown corners, and the new year ahead.  

In contrast to the cruisy, layered and cinematic first single, ‘Round The Corner’ is a tight, dancy, uptempo, jazz funk burner featuring the group’s core trio raw and upfront. The Rubbery, pulsating electric bass guitar of Lachlan Symons, the silky Fender rhodes (and acoustic piano solo), jazzy guitar licks guitar of Andrew Fincher, and the gritty, razor sharp grooves and percussion of drummer paprika, are all wrapped up into this dancefloor-friendly, contemporary live jazz funk track.

“Round The Corner” embodies some of the current resurgence of live jazz-house crossover sounds coming out of Australia (Horatio Luna, First Beige etc), whilst also reminiscent of Incognito, The Rebirth and Herbie Hancock’s 70’s jazz fusion years. Another sumptuous taste of what to expect on this special new record from ‘down-under’ out on modern funk and soul label Légère Recordings.

The second single to be pulled upcoming BBE album ‘Strata Records – The Sound of Detroit – Reimagined By Jazzanova’, ‘Saturday Night Special’ features remixes by Kai Alcé and DJ Amir & Re.decay, as well as The Lyman Woodard Organization’s 1975 original.

Possibly the best-known piece of music from the Strata label’s diverse and innovative catalogue, the unique, low-fi, moody, understated aesthetic of ‘Saturday Night Special’ has captured the hearts of music fans and DJs worldwide. “When I first heard the Lyman Woodard Organization ’Saturday Night Special’,” says DJ Amir, “I thought it was a song from a Blaxploitation soundtrack. Once I realized that Lyman was from Detroit, I immediately thought that if there was ever a ’theme song’ for Detroit that ’Saturday Night Special’ would be it. There is such a cinematic vibe to the song full of grit, rawness, and determination that just soaks into your veins. This album/song will always be in my bag of records to survive the apocalypse with!’”

When DJ Amir and Jazzanova began work on the ‘Reimagined’ project, breathing new life into the Strata Records archive, this jazz-funk classic was right at the top of the list of ‘musts’ for the band to re-interpret. “I had no idea what direction they were going to go, musically” says Amir. “The original song had been sampled more than a few times, but in my opinion, it was never done tastefully. However, from the first practice session, I knew that they were spot on with the right direction! Their version is the perfect blend of Detroit and Berlin!”

Kai Alcé’s ‘NDATL’ remix of ‘Saturday Night Special’ (named, like his label, after his three hometowns of New York, Detroit, ATLanta) brings a sure-footed lightness to Jazzanova’s version of the song, making the absolute most of the track’s stellar horn solos. “After hearing the unreleased Kamasi Washington/Gregory Porter remixes he did, I knew I had to reach out Kai” says Amir. “With this remix, he stretches out
the track into a seven minute groove, in the direction of a soulful house/future jazz interpretation.”

Alongside his Berlin production partners Re.decay, DJ Amir turns in a low-slung rework of ‘Saturday Night Special’, using as many parts from the Jazzanova version as possible. “We tried to emulate the intro to one of my favourite jazz dance tracks, ‘Expansions’ by Lonnie
Liston Smith” says Amir. Mission accomplished.

Saturday Night Special (DJ Amir & Re.decay Remix Extended Version)

New music from award winning 19-year-old saxophonist and composer Emma Rawicz.

Already making waves on the UK music scene, at the age of 19 Emma has already recorded her eagerly awaited debut album featuring guitarist Ant Law, made up entirely of her original compositions, due to be released in May 2022. She has also created a name for herself both as a bandleader and a sideman. A new arrival on the scene, she has already made an impact, regularly playing at major London jazz venues with a wide range of established musicians. Emma is a recipient of the 2021 Drake Yolanda Award.

"Voodoo" is a driving, jazz-funk infused track. It features angular, grooving melodies, clever interplay between instrumentation and burning solos from Scottie Thompson (piano), Ant Law (guitar) and Emma (saxophone). An original composition with shades of Chris Potter, Wayne Shorter and Kenny Garrett.

Emma's influences range from modern jazz and fusion to folk and soul. But growing up in rural North Devon, Emma didn't discover jazz until the age of 15, and didn't pick up a tenor saxophone until a year later, but had spent her childhood otherwise immersed in largely folk and classical music.

Emma is a natural performer. Her music has a unique sound, fusing all her many influences, and her compositions range from lilting Afro Cuban inspired grooves to hard hitting modern jazz and funk numbers.

Today's premiere comes from Boogie Cafe's Mususo. Following his downtempo focused 'Friends & Family' album, BC boss Chezz puts a broken beat & house leaning spin on "Appreciate".

Chezz turns "Appreciate" into a real journey of warm, low slung chords, and skippy broken beats. The Boogie Cafe co-owner  adds elements of the original by scattering the vocal sample over the track, giving it real atmosphere.

Misuso is a talented young producer from Boogie Cafe's home town of Bristol. Released earlier this year, 'Friends & Family'  is a collection of super chilled downtempo tracks, cleverly crafted with jazz and gospel samples, reminiscent of Nightmare On Wax's Smokers Delight and Early Ninja Tunes records.

With residencies in famous Dutch clubs like Nighttown, Off-Corso and the legendary Now & Wow, Rotterdam based dj/producer Chezz has been a silent force in the night scene since the late nineties. His roots lie in hip hop, later broadening his sound to boogie, house and broken beat. Known for his uplifting, funky dj-sets and his ability to read and rock every crowd, he draws inspiration from a diverse range of musical styles. He has released broken beat and jazz infused house jams on Kolour Music, Moulton Music and of course, the Bristol-born Boogie Cafe Records of which he is co-owner.

The full digi remix EP drops on May 6 with further remixes by Sean McCabe , Piers Kirwan, and Haze City.

During the summer youth program of 1970 and '71 at St Paul's Catholic church
a young Tunnie Smith was singled out by Father George Artist for his outstanding singing
abilities. 
He was soon introduced to Joe Delpit and Reginal Brown to sing along with their show and
dance band "The 13Th Amendments. It didn't take long before Tunnie was a full member of the 
band and became a featured singer performing throughout Louisiana.
After a year and a half of performing at nightclubs, military bases and universities Tunnie landed
a record deal with Rick Hall's Fame/UA record label.
His first single from 1973 was a wonderful mid-tempo number entitled "Finders Aren't Always Keepers"
flipped with "Do That To Me"
It gained National distribution and had some good success. Tunnie left Fame records and was 
introduced to Stax record executives Al Bell and John Smith.
After signing with Stax Tunnie met legendary writer and performer David Porter where they recorded
an album which was scheduled for release around 73/74.Unfortunately Staxs association with CBS came to a halt
and the project got shelved.
Tunnie went home and carried on performing around the Louisiana area with his new band Sweet Music Orchestra"
Fast forward to 1983 Tunnie whilst recording some vocals at River City Recording met Chicago producer
and arranger George "Paco" Patterson.  George was musical director and had worked with The Isley Brothers
Wilson Pickett and many other well known artists.
During this period Tunnie along with George formed a great partnership and along with some top session musicians
record some incredibly lush, well produced and atmospheric songs
The A Side "Dancing On Da Cloud" kicks of with female backing vocals and cascading strings layered over each other
to create a full bodied 2 Step Rare Groove classic, which we can only compare in the highest esteem to an
out take from Marvin Gaye or Leon Ware.  It oozes sheer class with rasping horns and Tunnie showing he 
hasn't lost any of the singing prowess he got singled out for as a young boy in1971.
"I Found A Miracle" is a slightly slower affair than the A side but still kicks a punch. It starts with pounding drums
and again those cascading strings whilst Tunnie's scatting vocals flow until the verse arrives.
It is a powerful beat ballad-esque song that sits perfectly back to back with "Dancing On Da Cloud."
