Passing Through the Underwater City

Improv using Buchla DIY clone system, with modules such as: 208, 207, 266, 294, 230, 258

The 266 as a noise source - sent through a 294 comb filter, then into a 230 EG. When the CV generated from the 230 is sent to modulate a VCO, this creates a sort of "tape mangled" dark warble tone. Especially pretty, and effective when applied to the Complex Oscillator of the 208 & the mod oscillator of a 258 (258 dual VCO with both oscillators set to Sine wave output - set up in a cross mod FM patch).

Clone 208 reverb depth is increased at the end... as the audio fades in volume.

The Noise that Sweetens a Taste of Chaos

Dark and a bit crispy as I explore a  drone-like, and semi-controlled feedback patch.

Created with a DIY Buchla style synthesizer - using modules such as 208, 207 and 258.

All sound straight out of system - no external processing,

BTW.... this was truly my 1st feedback patch on this system. I was pleasantly surprised with the timbral extremes possible. I think with more time and careful attenuation.... many audio worlds of tone can be unleashed!

What sounds like feedback... is not. Just strategic mixing of a 258 back into the 208 external input!

LOVE deep reverb.... so this audio is drenched, and I make no apologies :)

Mana Vimana

By chance via a trade, I just picked up a Red Panda Particle Delay.

It arrived this afternoon.

It is awesome. . . . . . . . 

Made this audio example using the "reverse" setting - paired with a DIY Buchla system (with modules such as: 208, 207, 258, 266, 257, 281, 292)

Using a spare 292 VCA channel to attenuate the input signal works great with Buchla.

This audio is 1x 258 sine into 292 clone lpg. Clock is a 281. random sequence is from 266. No reverb.. just a mostly hot and pure sine tone into the Red Panda Particle Delay.

The pedal is deep.... this is only one setting with minimal knob tweaks.

Also wanted to note that the distortion you hear (which I thought was nice) was purely via the Particle Delay output split back into the 258 FM input. The amount is randomly VC'd from the 266 (as it was patched through a 292 lpg) - Cheers!

Ionized Blips - Red Panda Particle Delay

Improv using a DIY Buchla 200 modular that I built - and a stock, original VCS3 MKI "Putney".

First time using these together... it's easy to get lost in the otherworldly sound.

VCS3 Buchla Landscape 2013

Very short experiment using:

EML 200

Electro Harmonix 8 Step Programmer (sequencer)

Roland RE-301 Tape Delay

That's it... the EML 200 provided the clock for the EH 8 Step Sequencer. Glide was via the EH, manually turned on and off. The RE-301 was mixed back into the EML Stereo Mixer section. All straight into the computer.

The weird tone came from using the EML 200 Ring Mod...also, one VCO was controlled via the EH 8 Step, and the second was occasionally controlled via the S&H.

Waves of the Cosmic Ocean

A rhythmic improv on a DIY Buchla 200.

All sounds created within the synthesizer - no external processing.

Two To FIve To Three 200 2103

Experimenting with using 281's to delay events controlled by an 8 step sequence. Events like Tuned delay feedback using the 277r delay.

All sounds 100% within the DIY 200 system.

Main audio source was a single 259r. 3x note sequence was triggered and made using the 208r sequencer. The second sequencer was a modified Pressure Points Brains combo I made with custom touchplates ... much like a vintage 112 Touch Controlled Voltage source.

Main mixer/panning was via 227r. 

Key in variations was the 266r and a pair of 257r voltage processors.

No reverb this time.

Buchla 100 Style Random Improv Dec 2014

A little 2 layer patch using a '79 - '81 era Serge!

Some manual patching and tweaking as the song plays.

Modules used:

2x PVCO, UAP, VCFS, VCA, DUSG, Dual Processor, VCFQ (Extended Range VCF, TKB, Extended ADSR, SSG, Dual Comparator.

Serge out into a Strymon Blue Sky Reverb... then into the computer.

Patch using a DIY Buchla 200 style system:  MARF 248r, 258r, 277r, 292r, 281r, 245r, 207r, 275r, 266r, 257r, 256r ... NO external processing at all..... everything straight out of the 200r system!

- each VCO patched through a 292e combo LPG
- Sequence is the ARP from a 218e
- the 218e PVS is transposing... via 254e
- some manual filter sweeping
- along with a 281e slow triangle wave (via 254e again for CV processing)

Direct to my laptop audio interface - no edits.

200e Improv Sept 26 2016

"Klang Clack - Buchla 200e Study"

Buchla 200e patch experiment. Exploration focuses on short semi repeatable, clacking sounds - as pulled from a single patch.

All sounds created in real time on the Buchla 200e, out through an Eventide Space Reverb, into an analog mixing console for some bus compression then out to the computer. No edits.

Modules used:
266e, 254e, 292e, 285e, 206e, 230e, 261e, 258e.

Core sound is generated from the 261e MO variable waveform through a 292e. The 292e signal is fed back into the same 261e VCO's FM input via a 230e. Output from the 292e is patched into a 285e Ring Mod, with a 258e Sine used as the external ref source. 

Other elements of the patch exist, but the use of feedback through the 230e, creates Pulse/CV outs that are mixed back into a bank of 281e function generators and the 266e QRV etc. come together for some Klang Clacking madness.

Klang Clack - Buchla 200e Study

Self Gen Uncertainty - 200e Patch Oct 10th 2016

A random, unsteady, yet semi tonal and timber rich patch. The pace is almost human - the tones and melody have an organic "feel". The patch is self guided, 100% self generating.

Modules used:

266e, 250e (used as a "quantizer"), 254e, 206e, 281e, 292e, 261e (as a Mod VCO source), 259e (as the main "voice").

200e output into an Eventide Space "Quasar" patch... with mix levels fairly low. Space sent into the API console and through a buss style analog compressor. Direct out into the computer (via Fireface 800).

High Frequency FM patch using a prototype custom 200e compatible 258e module.

The patch was fairly complex, but very generally:

258e VCO#2 LFO pulsing a 230e to create a pulse for 266e QRV used to control a mix of 258e VCO#1 pitch. I used a variable waveform output from a 261e Mod VCO ... patched back into the 258e VCO#1 FM input.

Other modules used in this patch (in no particular order): JRB Reverb, 281e, 292e, 227e, 254e, 210e.

Also - NO external efx or compression - straight out of my Buchla, into the console, then into the computer.
