How in the dusty old name of Anjuna Beach did it ever get so fast..? So ponder Trance loyalists Alexis Le-Tan and Tom Colebrook as they reflect on their past exploits. Pace wasn’t an issue back then; Soho, Somerset, Ibiza, Goa.. all were the unified stomping grounds of these two old muckers. Bound together back then by the depth and breadth of psychedelic music, the endless parties, and of course the wondrous hilarity of it all… The naughties saw their paths wind off in different ways, but as the wise traveler returns to his beginnings, so too was a re-melding of mature minds inevitable... A re-appraisal of the past saw a yearning for a slower pace. Colebrook joined Le-Tan on his hitherto hugely influential half speed mission, and so, with the pure gusto of Now, the ALTC project was born. A living archive where old flames find a fitting new purpose at a different speed. ALTC is on a quest to uncover, adapt and rearrange past glories, making them more in tune to their common vision and goals.

Optimo Music proudly introduces “Superconductor”, a double album by Blotter Trax, out June 23rd. 

Back in 2018, two mysterious twelve-inch singles appeared in underground record shops. Credited to Blotter Trax, a previously unknown outfit who cherished “faceless” anonymity, the pleasingly twisted and mind-altering music on show was a mutant form of electronic psychedelia. The included tracks were variously informed by analogue techno, acid, electro and minimal, but inhabited their own clandestine sonic space. These tracks were, we later discovered, lightly edited “straight to tape” jams, crafted on the fly by their creators in one of Berlin’s most admired studios. 

By the time Blotter Trax delivered their follow-up on Clone offshoot Frustrated Funk a year later, the secret was out: the project was in fact a collaboration between two storied artists, techno titan Magda – a DJ/producer who should need little introduction – and serial underground aggravator (and man of many aliases) Jay Ahern, sometime Hauntologists member and acid techno royalty thanks to years spent releasing similarly shadowy EPs as T.B Arthur. 

In the years that followed, and before the COVID-19 pandemic grounded them in Berlin, the pair took their incendiary, modular-driven live show to esteemed clubland institutions (Fabric included), on an acclaimed tour of Japan, and onto the stages of festivals across Europe. 

Four years on from that appearance on Frustrated Funk, Blotter Trax are back in updated and expanded form. Now a trio thanks to the addition of bassist and sound artist Hannes Strobl, the band is set to release their far-sighted, funk-fuelled debut album, Super Conductor – a pulsating, thrill-in-minute ride that includes extensive contributions from principal vocalist and lyricist Nina Hynes (a long-time friend and studio collaborator), as well as appearances from singers Ilhem Khodja and David Moss, and guitarist Shigeru Tanabu. In addition, Matthew Styles mixed the set and old friend John Tejada mastered it. 

Speaking of the album’s inspirations, and specifically the meaning of the title, Nina Hynes highlighted the following passage from her lyrics: “Super Conductor is the realisation that agency is within one’s own control. A reminder to cease that knowledge with a playfulness around the concept that our own minds and feelings can be used like a technology to reprogram and manipulate our cellular selves so we can thrive in the modern cult of health and youth. I am the Super Conductor.” 

While rooted in electro and acid, the album is impressively low-slung, stylish and funky, with nods towards Blotter Trax’s mutual love of Arthur Russell, early ‘80s NYC downtown disco, leftfield new-wave pop and flash-fried punk-funk. Released by JD Twitch’s admired Optimo Music imprint, it charts the ongoing dancefloor evolution of a band whose days of mystery and mischief are now a distant memory. 

Released on double vinyl and digital June 23rd 2023.

Meet Anastasia Zems — a Lisbon-based DJ, producer, and singer who had already caught our attention with her soothing one-take vocals and clever balance between earthy rhythms and urban energy (an approach we’ve always had a crush on). Up until now, Anastasia’s production efforts have earned her singles, remixes, and EPs on labels like Super Utu, Les Yeux Orange, Electric Shapes, Whypeopledance, and Human Endevaour — a pretty decent portfolio to say the least.

In her Escape Route podcast entry, Anastasia invites the listener to a rather industrial-leaning mid-tempo workout — as hot as the burning concrete of downtown Sofia in late July.
