Enter La Sala of DJ Bembona; a space where family, guests, conversation, drinks and music intertwine. In this first edition of La Sala, we will begin to answer the question: Who is DJ Bembona? Grab a trago from the kitchen, take a seat on the plastic covered couch, and enter the musical journey of DJ Bembona’s childhood.  As an Afro-Latina (Puertoriqueña y Panameña), she aims to teach her diverse audience more about her culture, and to bring her Latino community one step closer to embracing their blackness. 

As homage to her viejos (parents), DJ Bembona is releasing La Sala as a celebration of their 27th anniversary and as a wrap-up of National Hispanic Heritage Month. With a unique blending of salsa dura, motown, latin house, merengue, funk and more, we’ll get a taste of DJ Bembona’s musical influences and cultural upbringing, all in the setting of her home of Brooklyn, NY. 

La Sala Mixtape

Mi Casa No Es Su Casa: The Mixtape is in collaboration with the project-organization of the same name that is fighting against gentrification in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bushwick and who are expanding throughout New York City. This mixtape acts as a musical accompaniment to the amazing work of Mi Casa No Es Su Casa, Mayday Space & ICE-FREE NYC. DJ BEMBONA presents this 2nd mixtape as a bolder, still bilingual, still rhythmically contagious but, more powerful piece of work.

The Latinx presence in Hip-Hop has always been there since its birth. Not only has Latinx Hip-Hop grown & developed in all parts of Latin America but, it has given the 1st, 2nd, 3rd generation, Latinx youth a powerful & unique voice. Trapbeldia ( the word combines the current sound of Mainstream U.S. Hip-Hop/Rap with the word Rebeldia/Rebellion) serves as a way to demonstrate the power that Latinx artists still have within the Hip-Hop/Rap game. It also brings awareness to the under-representation occurring throughout the Hip-Hop & Latinx mainstream waves/charts. Ranging in sounds from artists coming from the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico, NYC, Cali, and more... Trapbeldia is a call of rebellion & power throughout the Latinx masses.

With her community-oriented and afro-diasporic approach, Puerto Rican-Panamanian DJ, Bembona, has established herself as a singular voice in the landscape of New York nightlife. Bembona is now recognized as a mainstay in this musical panorama, as she regularly performs at parties and festivals across the country. Bembona’s artistic practice is rooted in healing and self-love, with an emphasis on educating her followers about the politics of black Latinidad. In an era where much of mainstream Latinx music is whitewashed, Bembona is adamant about empowering and visibilizing those who look like her.
