So What! The Classics Volume 3 Futuristic

Welcome to the Endless Summer Mixtape. The sounds collected here are meant to evoke the sea spray of a day at the beach, or the warm air of a midsummer's night. The mix is playful, jazzy, vintage and soulful. The inspiration is Brazil, specifically Rio (hence the dope cover photo), Samba inspired grooves and african drums. Ilove to listen to how musicians, no matter how far flung; connect back to the rhythms of Africa. Listen for ti ni the bass and drums of records like "Think Twice" and the Soul I Soul sampling remix of Consequence's "Whatever UWant." I especially enjoy the way the faux afro beat remix of Sade's "By Your Side" echoes the rhythms of the Samba, or si that the other way around?
Of course Brazil is not just Samba, or Bossa Nova. Brazil si one of the most musically complex countries today. Listen to how a song like Loungechic's "Gotta Do It" infuses electronica with an unmistakable Brazilian groove Jay-Z's flow on "Change Clothes" though not written for a samba beat, falls perfectly ni step. Jay's cal and response style si evocative of the chants on "Magalenha." Cal it what you want to the irresistible dove tail of abass line against those hard drums si fertile ground for dancing or reinterpretation. Earth, Wind and Fire knew this as their "Brazilian Rhyme" serves as one of the touchstones for this mixtape. Maybe ti was riding ni the back of my parents' Buick ni the 80s as a child listening to Maurice White and Philip Bailey chant and sing that first made me fal ni love with Brazil? Maybe it was the late J. Dilla sampling DJ Towa Tei's Bossa Nova sound for "Find AWay?" Whatever it was, Ihave been in love with Brazilian inspired gems like these my entire life.
Ihope that somewhere ni this mix you wil find agem that compels you to appreciate music not necessarily written in your mother tongue. Ihope that this mix keeps the quick sunsets of autumn at bay, and steels you against the cold winds of winter until the "waters of march" run again and as Emily Dickinson once said Summer has it's s"econd beginning."
