Label boss DJ Bone mans the controls for the 38th release on Subject Detroit, laying down a typically fierce, three pronged auditory attack. "What He Said" tactfully yet forcefully treads the line between house and techno, cherry picking physiognomies from each side of that ever-blurring line and constructing something fresh but bristling with familiar Subject Detroit elegances. A favourite fixture from Bone's more recent DJ sets, "I Do" sees bubbling, arpeggiated chords simmer and swoop from foreground to background loosely as one solitary, remanipulated ticking hat keeps things in formation. Watch out for the thunderous, doubled-up drum arrangement that crashes in to the picture out of nowhere! Meanwhile "Rhythm Soul Funk" is a genuine hard hitter and another that tiptoes between the old school and the nouveau.

A nod to Detroit as an ever-present - a marker by which others are measured, Bone's first track on The Detroit EP, Here To Stay (Won't Fade Away) makes a statement above and beyond just being a fine example the music it refers to. The sumptuous melody that opens the track is accompanied by a substantial yet soft, almost warm, kick, a combination that somehow provides an atmosphere and depth way beyond merely the of the sum of its parts. More rolling percussion and drums are crisply ushered in before the Here To Stay (Won't Fade Away) vocal begins looping over the composition. Linear, straight up loops, grooves and rhythm give a consistent sense of railroad-esque motion atop of an ever-present vein of lush synth and melody. A track that is certainly hereto stay.

With more of an emotional focus than symbolic this time, it's clear this one is from Bone's heart. Detroit Is ... Soul, ducks and weaves in the grey area between house and techno; the initial percussion that is brushed over the kick giving more of a house swing than a techno groove. The on/off, cut-and-dry synth chords contrast with the looser fluidity in Here To Stay (Won't Fade Away), and gives a real sense of intent and desire. The real focal point however is the profound vocal that comes swirling over the top, "Detroit is what I love, Detroit is what I need, Detroit is where I'm from, Detroit's the air I breathe?" No explanation necessary

Bone rounds off part 1 of his Detroit EP with aplomb. Where the previous two tracks have drawn on the emotional and symbolic significance of Detroit as a place and as an ideal, Detroit Is ... Hard, cuts straight to the chase. Utilizing the same vocal sample as Detroit Is ... Soul, Bone feeds things through the grinder and comes out with a late night dancefloor destroyer that blends Millsian fury and Red Planet mystique with the archetypal Subject Detroit aesthetic. Chaotic arpeggiated melody, indignant claps and breakneck drums and percussion are the chosen company for Bone's words on this flipside to Detroit Is ... Soul. Detroit is ... Hard, undoubtedly to become a mainstay for sweaty after-hours affairs the world over.

The late, great John Peel invited DJ Bone to do a live audience mix on Radio 1 from his Maida Vale studios on 04-04-2001.

4th of April 2001

Truly one of the greatest and most humbling days of my career.

Weeks earlier I had received a telephone call...the voice on the other end asking if I'd be interested in playing a live session @ Maida Vale Studios for John Peel which would be aired live on BBC Radio 1. I could hardly believe what was happening. I was told that the request came directly from the man himself too!

Once in London, on the morning of, John Peel personally called to chat and to let me know that due to extremely high response/demand, the live session was being moved into a bigger studio. The number of attendees was limited but more & more people had managed to gain invites. 

I arrived at the studios and was immediately greeted by Mr. Peel. I was in awe to say the least. 
On top of that...he insisted on carrying my records inside for me. He said it was an honor for him to do so and refused to let me carry them at all. I told him that the honor was most definitely mine.

Once inside I was sequestered in the recording booth until showtime. I could hear the studio filling up, buzzing with noise. Then John Peel knocks and enters the room telling me that a special someone was here to see me...in walks Dave Clarke! One of my all-time favorite DJs. With Dave, the crowd and many other major influential figures present, I was ready to get it live in there. And what a great time we had!

What an amazing opportunity, huge blessing and historical experience for me.
All due to one legendary man!

The significance of the club residency can’t be underestimated; it gives artists the opportunity to build a tight knit community around the party, regulars know what they are in for, and word of mouth spreads the vibe and new guests arrive to check out the experience. The residency becomes by extension a community hub, for shared ideals, values, and experiences. A place to discover new acts, enriching reputations, taking things FURTHER.

Drawing on the vibe from the residencies he had coming up. Bone’s idea is to have top quality music from the first song to the last song. It’s not going to be the artist’s regular set; it's going to be people bringing their A game. Different styles outside their usual vibe. Taking the interment, friendly feeling of bringing people into his living room that was created at the original FURTHER
and turning it into a house party. RADION’s multiple rooms and layout allows for us to create the old warehouse feel of a different mood in different rooms whilst not losing the intimacy which makes FURTHER unique.

The mastermind alongside manager and Wife Ahnne Araza, DJ Bone’s role will be mixed, whether opening or closing the party, or not performing at all if he does not fit the vibe. He will be omnipresent with the careful curation of each monthly show. With RADION offering a blank canvas to create their vision.

FURTHER features an ever-revolving artists/djs both established headline acts, legends and emerging talents.

As Bone Says “I want to transform the environment physically and auditorily. Help break new music and foster new talent; I don't believe in social media as the springboard for DJ’s, it should be what they can do in the booth... That's what a residency was about. It is about listening to the new tracks that’s hot before the hype. It’s about the old school values that used to be prevalent.
It is about great music produced by great artists played by great DJs.”
