Depeche Mode (DM) is an English alternative rock band from Basildon, Essex, England. Formed in 1980, he appeared within the mainstream of synthpop and quickly became influential and popular on the international stage. Its name comes from the French magazine Dépêche Mode.

Spotted by Soft Cell's agent before being directed by Daniel Miller who signed it to his Mute Records label in 1981, DM had its first success in Europe in the fall of that year with Just Can't Get Enough and in the United States in 1984-1985 with the single People Are People.

The success of his synthpop style strongly influenced industrial music remained constant until 1990 with the album Violator, including the titles Personal Jesus, Policy of Truth and especially Enjoy the Silence. The 1990s were marked by drug addiction, overdose and suicide attempt by lead singer Dave Gahan, who was not released until 1996, and the departure of Alan Wilder in 1995. DM, which now has only three members, continues to release albums (Ultra in 1997, Exciter in 2001, Playing the Angel in 2005, Sounds of the Universe in 2009, Delta Machine in 2013 and Spirit in 2017). The year 2022 is marked by the sudden death of Andrew Fletcher, leaving Depeche Mode to continue in duo formula.

Almost all of their songs are composed by Martin L. Gore, except for those of the first opus (Speak and Spell) which are mostly the fruit of Vince Clarke, who soon went on to found Yazoo and Erasure. Since 2005, singer Dave Gahan has participated in the writing of some songs. Martin L. Gore works hard to ensure that DM is not only considered a "synthetic" group, especially using the guitar.

Depeche Mode has charted fifty times on the UK Singles Chart, and several albums have reached number one in the UK, the US and other European countries4. According to Mute Records, in 2008, DM had sold 75 million albums worldwide5 and more than 100 million records including singles6. In November 2020, their inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame7 marked a career spanning four decades.
