MIXES & SETS

This is a mix that’s been brewing for a long time, probably since 2006. I'm not sure if anyone else's key takeaway from Borat was its soundtrack, but it launched me into a lifelong passion for seeking out sounds from places I'd likely never set foot in. I was transfixed by new instruments and unfamiliar mournful and boisterous melodies. The interest grew into an academic-adjacent study/observation of Balkan/Post-Soviet districts and otherwise post-dictatorship areas and their music. 

In this mix, I am mainly thinking about the voices, instruments, and languages of nomadic people, people in the diaspora, and people whom the West largely disregards. I made this while reading Dancing Bears: True Stories of People Nostalgic for Life Under Tyranny by Witold Szablowski, which you should read if any of this is interesting to you. The mix features Balkan, Eastern European, South African, and Central Asian classics and underground tracks, tied together with a generally darker techno thread.

For over 400 years, black and brown bodies in the US and other colonized lands have suffered systematic oppression and dehumanization. The uprisings we are witnessing and participating in are the direct result of the actions of those in power. This is what happens when you push a people to their limits. For generations, the communities who find themselves under the spiked boots of police states have turned to music and the arts to voice their pain, anger, hopes, experiences, and raw emotion. In putting together this mix, I attempt to draw upon the Black Radical Tradition in presenting well known anthems of struggle, anger, resistance, unity, paired with recordings of leaders of Black thought, such as Angela Davis, Eldridge Cleaver, Peter Tosh, James Baldwin, Tamarac City FL Commissioner Mike Gelin, and more. I also very proudly include the works of contemporary and brilliant black artist such as AceMo, MoMa Ready, James Bangura — artists whose work and words show their dedication to building up black and brown voices— as well as nonblack artists who vocally and actively support our struggle and acknowledge that their success is owed to black culture, like Bergsonist, Special Request, Fjaak, Mall Grab, Schake, and more.

I hope that this compilation of anthems of righteous anger will light a fire of revolt in your heart. A better world will require the current rotten, dangerously designed system to be dismantled. It starts in our hearts and heads. We all have to be better, constantly, but we also need to push “them” to be better or be left behind as we work towards a society free of state-sanctioned violence and oppression of all forms. 

Stay safe. Check in with your loved ones. Remember to breathe. Fight the power. And if you like this, by all means, play it loud. Piss off that conservative neighbor. Who gives a fuck.
