DRAGONFLY ECSTATIC DANCE SET- PORTLAND  JAN 1, 2014

Burning Man. It's the sum total of what makes being human an extraordinary experience, and that feeling has been my constant and consistent theme on the playa since my first time out, in 1995.  In this unscripted, 75-minute mix, mid-tempo organic house explores and celebrates the cultural nuances of mystically joyful and mesmerizing melodies and the deep push of pulsating rhythm and groove. The sounds of Aboriginal Australia, The Middle East, The Celts, and Africans of North, East and West origination, The sounds of the natives of the  Caucus Mountains and SE Asian steppes are all woven together in an unstoppable flow for the dancefloor.

I encourage you to explore and discover the incredible music the following artists have created, whose music ended up in this mix. Behind every tune is years of each and every producers picking up and practising an instrument, spending years learning music composition and music software and hardware, doing countless gigs, signing music contracts, dealings and negotiations JUST to get THEIR art to YOUR ears and DANCEFLOORS. An incredible festival, an incredible dance: In the late night steamy heat of the Costa Rican rainforest we Invoked the sacred through sonic alchemy and surrendered to the divine.  This set was the culmination of everything I strive for on the ecstatic dance floor - in the amorphously porous container of a festival a multi genre, tempo-twisted offering of deep groove and penetrating cadence elastically stretched the potential for expression over 108 minutes of unpredictable storytelling as each dancer exploded into the hyper-nowness of being.

I had the pleasure of knowing him through DJing with him, as well as hiring him for several festivals...and of course listening and dancing to him for 20 years. ENVISION FESTIVAL - ECSTATIC DANCE
(edit. Sat, 9 March: Renamed set "JUNGLE PRAYER ECSTATIC DANCE". Thank you everyone for the feedback. Your dance in the jungle was juicey.  The set was a collective somatic prayer, an embodiment and a devotion to the dance as medicine).

And like all my ecstatic dance mixes, this is a raw portrait of the dance floor before me,  each set experienced as a unrehearsed, spontaneous collaboration with the dancers. But on this particular night in the jungle I had and agenda: Peace, prayer, healing, tribe, remembrance, beauty, home.

Envision Festival was the apotheosis of what a dance floor can do, and how far it can go as collective cathartic release: It was a total hot, sweaty meltdown of a trust fall.  

p.s. DJing ecstatic dance at a festival generally requires getting down to business from the get-go. Unlike indoors, these dances compete with other stages, are a porous container, comers-and-goers, talking on the dancefloor....and this also makes it special and surprising for the uninitiated.

Burning Man 2024 - Thurs. 2:30am @ Soundgarden
Wow - this was a really special night. So many incredible dancers beautifully and enthusiastically expressing to my set. Behold 2 hours of unplanned and spontaneously DJ'd deep melodic beauty, uplifting global vibes and transcendent joy.  

As an exploration of world music this house mix spans many continents and cultures, one whose coda ultimately concludes with two remixes that, while they were somewhat a deviation from the theme of global sounds, they perfectly summed up the collective heartspace of those deeply vibing wee hours at Burning Man. 

Massive thanks to Mark Duncan and crew at Soundgarden (2:00/Gobsmack) for creating an exemplary space for music and the movement community.

So "as the story goes":

"It was sometime back in 1962, when I found myself piloting a wheezing old Ford station wagon, feeling not just disoriented but positively misplaced on the dusty byways to Joshua Tree. The washboard roads shook my bones and rattled my teeth, so the accidental discovery of the sole watering hole in that barren wasteland was like stumbling upon an oasis. Despite its forlornly desiccated and saturnine exterior, the lonely backroads bar was an outpost that promised the desperate kind of salvation only dire needs can summon: Ritual libations. A stiff drink, and a moment's respite.

As I pushed through the nameless saloon’s swinging double doors, they creaked open to reveal an astonishing sight: Johnny Cash, Jim Morrison, Ennio Morricone, and Hope Sandoval, all seated together at the bar, deep in their cups. Behind the counter stood Barnett, the bartender, a sly vision of dry humor and endless spirits. They spotted my lonely silhouette and, with drunken enthusiasm, beckoned me to join their spirited symposium.
What followed was a cacophonous marathon of intemperance and debate, as we discoursed basslines and bourbon, whisky and women, UFOs and poetry, guitars and remixes, and…deep house.

The outcome of that wild and chewy night? This mix—a tribute to your culturally errant wanderings, a testament to “stepping into yes”, the uncharted paths we stumble upon…and the unexpected that ensues".

Following is a deep organic house set of uniquely Afro/Latin rhythms threaded with the ecstatic timbre of village voices, seductive brass, percolating percussion and heartfelt melodies. The tempo cascades and falls throughout the mix...and ends with a parking spot in your melodic heart.

THE TUMBLEDOWN BLUES (LIVE @ NORTHERN NIGHTS FESTIVAL) : 
It's 2:30am and in a fast-paced, ever changing world  I’m dropping a downtempo mix that blazes a slow, achy trail across the American West. Festooned with ghost towns, rusticating prairie graves and lonesome crows, this collection of tunes lends you doleful voices, blues guitars, twangy banjos and the stuttering ragtime of vintage pianos. Its sideshow twin is the conjoined grumble and grime of downtempo bass. The cadence does have moments of upswing; ribald bar rooms and scurrying outlaws make a momentary presence. But the coffee-meets-whisky approach makes this sonic libation yet another perfect slow-sipper as the soundtrack for your wayward soul.

DRAGONFLY - THE TUMBLEDOWN BLUES (live @ Northern Nights Festival)

This one! Transglobally good groove of Gritty and gossamer, delicate and driving, spaciously dense and playfully serious Afroblessed, Latin scorched, Heart-Opening, Booty-Shaking levity. 

Here's a mix of deep, pulsing and vibrant global magic. A late night house music journey on the playa that extracts itself from an incredibly tumultuous burn: The heat, the wind, the destruction, the dust...then rain. 

The elements in all their adversity did little to restrain an incredible dancefloor at Sound Garden where I dropped MY most inspired set since attending my first burn 30 years ago. While massive thanks to the dancefloor for its constant inspiration that night, an even bigger thanks goes out to my friend Mark Duncan, the inimitable and indefatigable visionary and host who curated and produced yet another extraordinary week at Sound Garden.

(On a final note, the closing track (Florian Gasperini - Back Home) is dedicated to our friend John Rider who passed away at the burn, at camp, Weds morning. His happy place. He would not have wanted it any other way)

DRAGONFLY - MIDNITE MIRAGE - BURNING MAN - SOUND GARDEN - 2025

A Black Rainbow is the optical phenomenon of low light suspended between the arc of parallel rainbows…and this mix is what that sounds like.  I feel it as a place over  a dance floor,  as a dark and dreamy environment; like a kelp bed where dancers moved with uniquely elastic expression and where the fluidity of somatic articulation became inseparable from the crepuscular rays of dappled sounds.  

The dark-in-the-light journey here is melt in your mouth and melt your body bass-scape. It imagines the sounds of molasses and glitter while it blends grit and glimmer. A through line of shifting tempos and textures is backed by a warm euphoria of moody, melancholy, sensuous, serpentine and occasionally, grimy bass. May the spectrum of sounds anchor each end of your rainbow.

Thank you to producer friends like An-ten-nae Mfinity, Arboreal, Bass Temple, AttyA, Ashez, Peace Sine, Skysia , Senza and DJs like  Haj & Kai, Reia and Qoi,  who pushed my own deep (crate) digging into realms of sound where many little known artists have recently impressed me In a big way.  Its a niche, esoteric sound I’m on the lookout for, for sure - but my entire musical life’s journey has always been rooted in the underground.  Surfacing now is this mix, a one-shot & one-take live set. I chose these tracks for the shape of their sound, their attitude, their tone, their  undefinable quality that feels right into my current sweet spot.

 …also memorable was the raven who greeted my arrival to the cathedral-like redwood grove where columns of redwoods stretched voicelessly towards the heavens. This was the location for what evolved into a beautiful Saturday Autumnal Equinox ecstatic dance in the California redwoods, held just north of Willits.
It was beautifully symbolic that such a bird would be present:  Ravens are rich, powerful symbols that are significant across many cultures. And they frequently appear at moments of transition—death, rebirth, and endings that lead to beginnings. They are messengers of transformation - rather than doom.
In the culture of ecstatic dance, with its ethos of inspiring transformation and transmutation the raven in the redwoods was symbolically and powerfully present during this deep equinox dance. A transformation rave(n) if you will.... Live , Unplanned and In-the-Moment recording

On a superb stretch of sand, just south of Todos Santos ( Baja, Mexico) I had the pleasure of celebrating with some 150 remarkable people. A private, week-long engagement was the occasion where this mix underscored the magnificent rural setting, epic sunsets, and the magic of friendship. Deep, Dub-influenced cumbia, with hints of various other Latin rhythms are represented by a new crop of breakaway producers hailing from the U.S. to Brazil. I hope you make this your favorite beach or poolside soundtrack to an endless summer...

DRAGONFLY - DUB & FLY (OPENING SET LEE SCRATCH PERRY & SUBATOMIC SOUNDSYSTEM)

Deep, slow pulsing basslines carry the exotic cargo of sound; pretty and gritty instrumentation, the ululation and trill of womens' traditional vocal techniques, and the swoop of mens' choruses.  North African rhythms shuffle and sway beneath the cresting timbre of taught, bluesy guitars, purposeful sintirs and the cascade of Malian harps (ngonis). Hand-claps and qraqebs (double-ended metal "castanets") chatter  hypnotically around the deep, definitive low end which craft the ethos of this 60-minute journey across the desert cultures of Mali, North Western Sahara, Morocco and Algeria.

The Tuareg inhabit the Saharan regions of North Africa - Niger, Mali, Libya, Algeria and Burkina Faso. From Wikipedia: The origins and meanings of the name Tuareg have long been debated. It would appear that Twārəg is derived from the broken plural of Tārgi, a name whose former meaning was "inhabitant of Targa", the Tuareg name of the Libyan region commonly known as Fezzan. Targa in Berber means "(drainage) channel".[20] Another theory is that Tuareg is derived from Tuwariq, the plural of the Arabic exonym Tariqi.[10]

No one knows the true origin of the Tuareg, where they came from or when they arrived in the Sahara. Their numbers are unclear, but estimates run between 300,000 and 1 million. The Tuareg were recorded by the Greek historian Herodotus in the 5th Century BC.
 
The most striking attribute of the Tuareg is the indigo veil, worn by the men but not the women, giving rise to the popular name the Blue Men of the Sahara, or Men of the Veil. Men begin wearing a veil at the age 25.
