Electronic music pioneers Slam return to their home base of Soma with their brand new album, Reverse Proceed.
After tireless months in the studio, the Glaswegian duo are ready to unleash what is easily their best body of work to date. Not only does this album capture where the two are at musically at the moment but is an extension of their unending fascination with all things Electronic. Lending their 22 years of experience to this new project, Slam have delved into the past for inspiration whilst simultaneously heralding future technologies in the production process. Conceptually, Slam wanted to have the human experience in mind when recording and to base the architecture of the album around ‘the sequence’. This led them to a locally built hardware sequencer called the ‘Sequentix Cirklon’ that became the heart of the album. Allowing them to access older machines and also a modern modular synth setup simultaneously, Stuart & Orde merged live manipulation and recording techniques to full potential to bring a soul to the album.
Reverse Proceed is more than an album; it is a well-defined experience built on the principle of the sequence. Having been meticulously woven together to create a seamless listening environment, Reverse Proceed aims to capture the audience and guide them through the sonic landscape of the album. This method allowed Slam to fully explore the concept of the album
being more than just a collection of tracks but rather a thoroughly immersible piece.
With this concept in mind, the album's opening drifts in over the course of several tracks as the malevolent Tokyo Subway opens what is the ambient first third of the album. Tension is built through sweeping pads and dubbed out synths leading perfectly into the more delicate Visual Capture where a sea of field recorded rain splashes over subtle bell tones and dream-state strings. Title track Reverse Proceed begins with intensity as pulsing sub bass fills the void with yet more time induced percussive fluctuations though synthesis, the haunting pads giving more depth to this deep, evolving track. The hardware at the center of the album takes hold now as Cirklon Bells brings a slight edge of melancholy to proceedings. It's natural hang-drum- esq sounds permeate as various layers are perfectly sequenced, breathing life into the track with each touch.
Heavenly pads bring Synchronicity into existence as we hear the first semblance of a 4/4 make its way out of the depths of the ambience. Stuttered percussion and fast paced, filtered synthetic tones give an almost unnatural rhythm whilst holding momentum firmly. A definite step up begins here as Ghosts Of Detroit stamps that typical Slam sound on the album. This ode to the motor city see an almighty melodic upheaval as tones begin to form complete harmonious coexistence and the album sees the shift onto a more dance floor orientated state of being, complete with blueprint style kick- sub bass conformity.
The ethereal interlude of Relevant Question proves to be little rest bite as Pattern A3 stomps in with flourishing modular based sequential tones and sparse, kicking 909 drums, the albums defining heads down Techno moment. Tweeked out, delayed and cerebral, Factory Music continues on perfectly as yet more off kilter sequences makes heads spin with it's subtle use of FX and crisp percussion. The wail of Convolute keeps things in check as discord swells enough to keep you ready for the solid and hypnotic Catacoustics. Dark and brooding it sets the tone for Irritant with its broken beat and roomy percussion riding spaced out, otherworldly forces. The easily recognisable Rotary helps see the album out with it's elastic synths and driving rhythms showing Slam's credentials as straight up dance floor killers. As we finally wind down from the journey we are brought into great depths with the sublime Resolved. A fitting title to end to what is the climax of this multi-faceted album.
Slam have always brought new meaning to the world of techno and electronic music over the years and have been instrumental in some of its defining moments over their careers. Modern Techno albums come and go but with a clear vision of what they wanted to bring to the table, the dynamic duo of Stuart McMillan & Orde Meikle have once again raised the bar for the world of techno.

Bonjour, Hola, Zdravstvuyte. Nǐn hǎo, Salve, Guten Tag, Konnichiwa… Wherever you 'Hale' from, this outstanding slice of techno from Japanese kindred spirits Sudo and Hito is something you're going to want to say hello to.

Sudo's return to Nicole Moudaber's MOOD since last summer's thumping 'Abstract' EP, 'Hale' sees him rolling in esteemed company as good friend and Richie Hawtin's Enter resident and MoodRAW regular, Hito, joins the fray. And what a fray it is… Tailored for the silly season ahead, 'Hale' is a super-charged roller laced with a rainbow of salutations and powerful harmonics that loop and twist in a similar immersive and addictive fashion to Underworld's gamechanging anthem 'Rez'. The producer and DJ brought together both of their creative talents and 'Hale' features the voices of various friends from all over the world celebrating the Japanese spirit for global diversity.

Remix-wise we remain in the land of the rising sun as Japanese techno OG Ken Ishii lays down two superb versions; one that makes amazing creative use of the global 'hello' montage in a real fun and funky way, and one that strips things back to the bare rhythmic bone. Finally we head to Montreal as Johnny Trika follows up his recent appearance on Hito's 'Deeperfect' collection with a much darker, pranged out twist where the bassline spirals into the ground and the vocal textures aren't all that they seem.

One hypercharged original, three precision remixes; MOOD, Sudo and Hito are getting us in the right mindset for another insane summer right here. Say hello.

The latest madness from notorious RF label boss Rennie Foster is a raw, warehouse style, techno trance-funk builder that could bang in any era and fit into a dozen or more genres of dance music. The title track Pole Position is comprised of only a few basic elements pushed beyond their usual presentation for a remarkable and unique result. The track is somewhat like a punk attitude being applied to a rave environment and it is sure to be a cult favorite among Rennie's core following regardless of mainstream appeal. 

The accompanying track Angelic Upstart also presents a trance inducing atmosphere but this time less aggressive and directed at the after hours morning floor that Rennie is often commanding as a DJ. Set on a bed of classic 303 acid and cinematic strings, the breakdown gives way to a Detroit style lead synth and the hypnotized congregation is immediately lifted up. The dance ritual is complete. 

Remixes both come from the UK, the first being from Derek Carr a respected stalwart of the melodic underground sound. He takes the basic sound palette and tone of the original in a completely different direction with a broken beat and creates a breathy and beautiful slice of sophisticated electro dream pop. This version is sure to resonate with fans of Derek's work. 

Going further north for the next remix, Auto Sound City bring a hardware punishing heater with the main pads of Pole Position getting absolutely tangled up in the pluck bass jack groove and rolling drum machine speaker fuel. There is definitely a nod to Detroit going on here, but with a primal and industrial house music knock as well. Pure underground mayhem. This desirable weapon is for heads only.

Tronic labels' head honcho, Christian Smith, returns to Tronic for his first single of the year. Fresh after his recent hit on Drumcode's A-Sides, he delivered two tracks that resemble his production style and music plays in his sets. 'Phazon' named after the famous sound system of the legendary New York club, Twilo, focuses on one main melody and forward driving energy. 'I called this track Phazon, because while I was producing it I incorporated an old school style melody and imagined how amazing it would have sounded on the insane Phazon system at Twilo in NYC. 'Hallucinate' is another adrenaline bomb, using analog rave sirens and a hypnotic female voice. This EP has been tested at many gigs before the global lockdown to great reactions.

Back in 1995, in a 4 page Mixmag Platipus special, Simon Berry was described by Alexis Petridis as “The Unstoppable Trance Machine". A quarter of a century on and Mr Petridis was not wrong. As the force behind Art Of Trance, one half of Union Jack, and founder of Platipus Records, Simon has been consistently fine tuning his trademark sound with chart topping singles on Bedrock, Platipus and Circus.

Following on from his ground breaking solo excursions ’Black Rainbow’, ‘Anaconda’ and ‘Rogue Planet’, Simon makes a return to nature with ‘Pangolin’.

Opening with the omnipotent original, ‘Pangolin’ emerges from the undergrowth as a low slung elusive anomaly. Rattling percussion paves the way for oriental ear bending arpeggios, soaring chords and descending scales, providing shimmering glimmers of hope for a more utopian vision of the future beyond pandemonium.

Ominous low frequency oscillations introduce the second instalment of 'Pangolin' by Berlin frequency wizard Torsten Fassbender. Spiralling glitched arpeggios are interspersed with jagged fluttering sawtooth pulsations. A divine audio delicacy to be savoured, or a medicinal musical doctrine?

Tokyoite DJ, producer, label owner and radio presenter Satoshi Fumi has been sharpening his katana over the course of time with a collection of quality releases on esteemed labels such as Get Physical, Bedrock and Moodmusic. Premiering on John Digweed’s Bunker Session 12, Satoshi’s instalment of 'Pangolin' is quite possibly his strongest remix to date. He unashamedly dissipates any distancing rules to implement a gentle pummelling of deep driving House, rich in rhythm and melodic tech nostalgia, revealing his roots in early 90's Chicago House and Detroit Techno, in a noble attempt to save it from extinction.

Currently on an incredible roll with release after release on a whole host of key labels – including Terminal M, Suara and Cocoon - Barcelona’s Bastian Bux makes his debut on Christian Smith’s Tronic label and it’s one of his most brazen EPs to date.

‘Lagano’ takes the lead and sets the parameters. Thundering but bouncy, you can already hear the funk long before the stunning rave riff comes in. Timeless, warehouse demolishing fun. This is proper techno. And it’s in good company… ‘Inside’ swaggers like a caveman, bashing down the walls with its swinging tribal drum arrangement while ‘Legacy’ opts for a faster, lighter, synth-led vibe that nods to the likes of Fabrice Lig and friends further afield in Detroit. Upbeat, pacey and coated in rushes.

Last but not least we hit ‘Vault’. The b-side black sheep of the EP, there’s a much slower, sexier twist in the tale as we’re taken through the smoky pathways of Bux’s mind until we’re going round in sweet synth-licked circles.
