Lamine is a famous bboy from France. He was asking me about doing a mix for his Redbull event and while looking through some vinyl for the mix, I found a sample and made this track, so the name stuck. Afro and Latin percussion ​maestro Sam Debell, aka People’s Rhythm, also from the UK, but living in China added the killer percussion.

So the idea of this looper is too work out new scratches slowly and then to gradually increase your speed. First work out the new scratch with no music, then start at a BPM of 65 with your new scratch. When you get the scratch down at that speed work your way up the tempos until you reach 125 BPM. Now go back to 65 BPM and get the scratch down at double speed and work you way back up the tempos. I hope this looper is useful and please feel free to provide any feedback.

Lost Soul Pt 2

This song was recorded during and following the Soul Clap Asia tour in 2011 organized by DJ DSK. Jim Dunloop, DSK and Marc Hype met whilst performing at a pop concert in China organized by Zebrocski aka Akim Walta of the Hip Hop Stutzpunkt – Berlin, Germany. After numerous shows across China and Asia they decided it would be fun and interesting to record some music with local artists as they toured China, Hong Kong, Cambodia, Vietnam, Singapore and Thailand.  “Soul Love” is one of the tracks produced and is interesting as it contains English, Mandarin and Cantonese languages.

Part 1 – Beijing, China.

DJ DSK arranged for a jet lagged Jim Dunloop just a few hours after arriving in China to met up with Little Han a guitarist from one of Chinas only funk bands “The Verse.” DSK threw together a simple beat and Jim and Little Han even though not being able to speak the same language started to jam and create some ideas. They recorded the guitar parts and later Jim emailed the midi patterns of all his keyboards and synths to DSK.

Part 2 – Shanghai, China.

In his hotel room DJ DSK roughly arranged some of the guitar parts and midi patterns over the drumbeat. DSK then called up his friend Drunk Monk and went on a quick vinyl hunt and discussed the project with him. Drunk Monk was sure his partner Chacha the top urban music vocalist in China would love to be part of the project. DSK passed on the rough beat to ChaCha and she recorded the chorus in Mandarin Chinese.

Part 3 – Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Whilst performing in Cambodia Marc, Jim and DSK where introduced to Peanut an American living in Phnom Penh that is a b-boy, producer and DJ. Peanut arranged for his friend and music partner MC Dolla an exiled American of Cambodian roots now living in Phnom Penh to record the first verse. At that time Peanut was in process of moving his studio so he set up a make shift studio in his kitchen to record the vocals. Mc Dolla wrote and recorded the first verse in English at this make shift kitchen studio.

Part 4 – Guangzhou, China.

After the end of the tour one more verse was needed, DJ DSK arranged for his friend Kid God from Chee productions to record the final verse in Cantonese. DSK had performed with Kid God several times before at the world expo and music festivals so knew it was the right choice. 

Part 5 – Kunming, China

Upon return to his home in Kunming, China - DJ DSK took all the recordings and midi patterns and started to arrange the track. The original beat was completely remade, the guitar parts and midi patterns also re arranged and chopped up to fit all the vocals.  Then the last stage was to mix and master the track at his home studio in Kunming.

On a return trip to Kunming, China I happened to be staying with my close friend Kris for a few days when he sadly received news of his father’s passing. After he returned from
dealing with his father’s issues, I ended up staying with him again. One night we shared a few whiskeys together and Kris was reminiscing and telling me a few stories about his Father and his life. He played me a cassette of Falcon Claw that he had found in his Father’s house and I was blown away. I knew straight away that I would love to put it out on vinyl as it was such a strong track and a great way to honor Kris’s father. So, with Kris’s blessing we decided to release it to the world. I rediscovered this song in my dad’s house when I was cleaning it out after he passed away. I found it in a box of cassettes that he had in a closet. I remember him telling me about this song when I was younger. He wrote it for a martial arts movie in the 70’s but it ended up not getting used. He always considered it to be his personal theme song. He is playing all of the parts and I remember him telling me that a neighbor on a CB radio kept messing up the recording sessions because his broadcast would come through his guitar amp sometimes.
The neighbor would call himself “The world’s most dangerous snake whipper”. The broadcasts messing up his recording sessions added a lot of intensity to the song that’s for sure. He called the voices at the end the “Voices of the extra-terrestrials”.This has always been my favorite song of his.

From the UK to Asia funking up the world!!!!!

A British local now residing in Kunming - China,  DSK was introduced to Hip-hop and electro music in the early eighties and immediately began B-boying, Graffiti and DJing but soon thereafter focused on the musical aspect, turned to the tables, and set to work perfecting his scratch and battle style techniques.  After making a name for himself as a DJ he began to produce Hip-hop tracks which soon led to vinyl releases and a series of Hip-hop, Funk and Electro mix CDs. After DJing and producing songs in the UK he left the UK shores for a greater challenge and established himself in Asia and eventually settled in China, achieving fluency in Mandarin Chinese.

As a performer DSK started out in the UK but has since become well known throughout China and Asia for his mixing and scratching skills, across various musical genres.  DSK can be found mixing Hip-Hop, R&B, Funk and Reggae, whilst his specialty is Old Funk/Soul and B-Boy Breaks. During the last few years DSK has toured extensively in such countries as India, Wales, Germany, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Taiwan, Korea, Indonesia, Hong Kong, India and, of course, his home country - England.  Working on the club/festival circuit as a performer and organizer, he has put together numerous well received “special shows”that incorporate live music with Hip-Hop elements.  These have included DJ shows mixed with Latin/African percussion, funky saxophone, the best MCs and singers and also Hip-Hop dancers and Graffiti, always emphasizing the importance of “pushing boundaries and keeping things fresh, exciting and original”.  
 
DSK’s turntable and production skills soon got noticed in Asia and he was approached by Numark / Akai and Alesis to act as their representative DJ to showcase new DJ and production equipment for a period of several years throughout China and Asia.  He has been selected for some of the most high profile international Hip-Hop dance competitions (B-boy / Popping ) across the world.  These include Freestyle Session, Battle Of The Year, Circle Kingz, Redbull Street Battle, UK B-Boy Champs etc.  His music productions have been released on his own label Unity and also STN records, Elecrolab UK  and even used by the BBC on documentaries. In 2009 he became the first DJ to perform live on Chinese national CCTV5 for their B-Boy Battle which also featured a solo turntable showcase. DSK has organized shows and performed for clients as diverse as the German president and Embassy, Shanghai World Expo, Major alcohol companies and clothing brands. He has also worked extensively teaching DJ and production techniques both in the UK for Croydon council,  in several Chinese schools, and  during workshops across Asia, also appearing as a judge for the DMC competitions.

DSK continues to be involved, as an organizer and performer, in shows at clubs, festivals and various promotional events.   He also runs a record label Unity Recordings recording and remixing artists and bands.   Please contact him for any events information.
