Advisors said diversify.  
Men in suits said this fund is bulletproof.  
Funny how bullets always find you when you ain’t wearing pads.  

I invested in restaurants that never learned seasoning.  
Car washes that never saw rain.  
Tech startups with logos but no product.  
Cryptos that vanished faster than my 40 time.  
Fraudsters smiled wide,  
told me I was family.  
I believed them—  
because family had already taken their cut.  

I gave to churches.  
Gave to schools.  
Gave to nonprofits with glossy brochures  
and kids on the cover who looked like Mike. 
 
I paid for dreams I’ll never see wake up.  
I bought turkeys on Thanksgiving,  
coats in winter,  
cleats for kids who swore they’d make it out.  
I paid bail.  
I paid tuition.  
I paid medical bills.  

Everybody said,  
“Man, you’re blessed.”  

Yeah, 
Blessed like a well they keep lowering buckets into  
without asking how deep it is.  

Now the phone don’t ring like it used to.  
No commercials.  
No autograph signings.  
No “former All-Pro” invites unless it’s a reunion  
where we compare scars like trading cards.  

I walk past TVs replaying my youth.  
That was me running.  
That was me bleeding.  
That was me worth something.  

So I ask the night,  
soft at first,  
then louder—  

Who took my money?  

Was it the cousin with the sneaker store dream?  
The pastor with the jet-fuel prayers?  
The hedge fund guy who never played a down  
but ran routes around my common sense?

Or did I give it away trying to be everything...

I paid it forward so much  
I forgot to save anything for the man  
I’d become after the cheerin' stopped.  

Nobody pre-paid my pain.  
Nobody insured my body against time.  
Nobody wrote checks to the version of me  
learning how to sit still.

Like contracts last forever.  
Like love don’t come with receipts.  

Now I’m counting favors like loose change,

I see the kids I helped,

walking past me like I’m a mural they don’t read anymore.  
I see the family barbecues where my plate is lighter,  
where the jokes land harder.

“You good, right?”  

I nod.  
Because pride don’t overdraft.  
But late nights tell the truth.  
Late nights ask questions.  

Was generosity a gamble?  
Was kindness a bad investment?  
Was I supposed to be colder,  
greedier,  
more selfish to survive this league called after?  

I ain’t broke.  
But I ain’t safe either.  
I’m rich in memories,  
poor in leverage.
